The space

A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.

This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.

Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room, kitchen , bath and your master bedroom

Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.

The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.

Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.

What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.

This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.

You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)

I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.

Please note that we we like to receive a message along with your request to stay, the castle is not a hotel but our home , so a little introduction is nice ,,,,, Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. Now this is not a hotel or a prison and we do have cobwebs and a little dust so if you are expecting a pristine five star hotel then go to one , This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
We like to make guests aware coming with young children that the castle is not a child friendly place ie
Unforgiving spiral stone stairs, unprotected hot stoves , no child locks on doors and numerous other hazards inside and out for the very young
Now if you feel that you can enjoy your stay without being stressed worrying about your children then why not
Also five people can be accommodated but its on the couch for one person

You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - spiral stone stairs 50 steps to the living room and another 15 steps to the bedroom
Some spaces are shared

So you want to stay in a castle... We highly recommend Peter and Eva's place. Peter restored the castle with his own two hands over the last 20 years and every bit of his personality and love shows through from the beautiful wooden beams in the ceiling, to the hand carved stones, and to the tediously designed mosaic bathroom floor. Please keep in mind this is a REAL castle and is accompanied by all the quirks a REAL castle would have including a bit of dust or cobwebs and a couple eight legged critters who find the warm corners home. In our opinion, these "quirks" only make the castle even more special. How lucky are we to share the space? Peter and Eva are probably the most welcoming and nonjudgmental people in Galway, or maybe all of Ireland. Your stay comes with the luxuries of wifi, a computer to watch movies, a small kitchen to prepare food, and various jars of sweets scattered around the living room area. There is even a beautiful fish tank and comfy hammock chair that hangs from the ceiling. If you're good, Peter will tell you about the surprise hidden in the floor. We would most definitely stay here again and our only complaint is that we didn't stay longer. Peter and Eva feel like friends immediately upon meeting them and their castle definitely felt like home, even if it was just for one night. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic!!! The real deal! This is an unforgettable experience. You really do live like the King and Queen. This isn't some fakey phony pretend experience. You actually rule the tower. Peter is a fantastic host along with being the craftsman behind the impressive restoration. He and his sons are wonderful artists and there are touches of their creativity everywhere. On top of that, they and Eva are very truly kind people and an absolute blast to talk with. Don't pass on this opportunity. We hope to find our way back to Pete's Castle in the future. Stand on the tower to enjoy the air and the view, take a relaxing bath, light a fire in the royal bedroom, enjoy the craic.

A once in a lifetime experience. Peter and Eva were very hospitable and made sure we had whatever we needed to make our stay comfortable and memorable. Though made of stone, the castle was warm and inviting with Peter tending to every need. We HIGHLY recommend you stay here and do 2 nights. One won't do.

So many wonderful things to say about Pete's Castle! It was an experience we will never forget and talk about for a very long time. Peter and Eva were fabulous hosts and made us feel so welcome. Peter is so incredibly talented. Hearing him tell his story of how he repaired the castle is amazing. And how he made so many things in the castle including the beautiful bed frame. You can't fully appreciate the things in the castle until you hear the stories behind them and we were so glad that Peter took the time to share those stories with us. The castle is very warm and comfortable. Something you wouldn't think would happen in a castle. The many stairs are such a fun feature but leave your big suitcases in the car and only bring up the smaller ones. We appreciated how they had the kitchen stocked with so many breakfast items, eggs, bread, bacon, cereals etc. Try to get to the castle in time to see the sunset from on top and while you're up there, see if you can find this castle's "Blarney Stone". Don't think twice, BOOK THIS CASTLE! You'll love it!

Peter is the best kind of host. He met us when we arrived at his castle, gave us a tour, and shared with us his passion that went into renovating it. It was the highlight of our trip! We enjoyed everything about this unique place to stay. If you are someone who loves history and something out of the norm, this is worth checking out. He also gave us recommendations for dinner, which was appreciated. I cannot say enough about how we enjoyed this stay.

I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
