About This Listing
A short drive to fun art, spa, shopping, and restaurant-filled Berkeley Springs, Cacapon Park golf and trails, and White Tail slopes, the newly-built five-bedroom loghome is cozy comfortable secluded and surrounded by wild trees, rocks, and nature.
Our log home is new, comfortable, and exciting but also cozy and remote. It is on a West Virginia mountain in the midst of a wild and wonderful natural world with mountain springs, streams, wildflowers, and deer. From the house, you can see intense colors of fall leaves, lichen and snow on branches in winter, and 360 degree green in spring and summer. It has comforts of 21st century living - wireless 4G Internet, flat screen satellite TVs, DVD players, French door refrigerator, front loader washer and dryer, six-person hot tub. Hike and explore the cliffs and forest along old logging roads near the house and then come back to a connected and comfortable world inside. At night, you can sit in a steaming hot tub on the screened porch and see tree leaves outside fluttering on the under-lit towering cliff rocks or from the large open top deck, watch the moon rise through the trees and stars come out overhead. Only three miles by car from the house, explore trails and streams, golf at a challenging championship golf course at 2300 feet, designed by golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Sr., ride horses, swim in a lake in summer, or enjoy a delicious breakfast or dinner at Cacapon State Park. Within twenty minutes, visit local artists, shop, and enjoy a spa treatment or massage in Berkeley Springs. Within forty minutes, shop at national-chain store in Winchester or an outlet mall in Hagerstown. Within an hour, downhill or cross-country ski, snow tube, or go fly fishing at Whitetail Resort ((website hidden)) or whitewater rafting/tubing, and river paddling at Harper's Ferry, Paw Paw, Sideling Hill Creek, and other locations ((website hidden)). The log house has two bedrooms on the main floor, both with double beds and a shared bathroom with a tub. It has two bedrooms on the top floor, one large with a King bed, and the other with two twin beds, with a shared shower bathroom. On the lower level, a smaller queen-futon bedroom with a view of the 42-inch wall-mounted TV in the adjoining rec room and foldout couch entertainment area with half-bath. The house comfortably sleeps eight. The great-room area on the main level has a large, forest green leather sectional sofa, flat-screen TV, and wood stove that heats most of the house in the winter along with electric heat throughout the house and lower level radiant-heat floors. The house has AC for the summer and a garage with plenty of additional driveway parking. The kitchen has a dishwasher, coffeemaker, Cuisinart food processor, electric oven and stove, and a range of useful and fun implements for cooking, for example a food mill, cookie sheets, Bundt cake pans, cast iron skillets, and Revereware in a range of sizes. Towels and bedding are provided. We also provide tents and four sleeping bags if you want to camp-out on our wooded 20 acres or around the fire pit near the house. Our log mountain home is a beautiful place to be part of wild and wonderful nature easily and quickly away from the noise, crowds, and commotion of city and suburban life but with the comfort and conveniences of modern life.
Directions: 230 Breakaway Lane, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411:
From the north (PA Turnpike/I70) watch for “Ridge” on a green sign about three miles south of Cacapon State Park as you drive on Rt. 522 about 9 miles south from Berkeley Springs, WV 25411. As soon as you see the sign, signal, slow down, and then turn right into a gravel parking area. At the north end past the mailboxes, follow the Breakneck Dr. gravel road up the mountain. Three times you’ll have to keep right or turn right. The gravel road is single lane and narrow, so please be slow and cautious. The last right onto Breakaway Lane comes soon after Breakeven Lane. As you go down the hill and then curve up the J-shaped Breakaway Lane, you’ll see the log cabin mountain house through the trees on the right side of the gravel road. The house number "230" is on a big rock on the right side of the road just after the red reflectors marking the driveway entrance.
You can find this map using “Breakneck Lane Berkeley Spring, WV” in (website hidden) (website hidden) (but not in (website hidden)). You can click on "Guidebook" on the left panel of this screen to see the (website hidden) map.
Guests are welcome to enjoy the house and amenities and all 20 acres of rocks, trees and hills surrounding the house.
Interaction with Guests
We would like to meet guests, but we often can't because our permanent home (a two-bedroom condo) is a couple of hours away. But our local friends and managers, Jennifer and W.J. Wills, are nearby if any problems or questions should arise.
The natural calm and quiet are unusually restful and renewing.
The house is near major highways but far enough away for cleaner air and mostly natural sounds and surroundings.
Other Things to Note
The house is small enough for a romantic get-away but large enough for a family, reunion, social and business group. Wood ceilings and distant green mountain views contrast with accessible Internet, appliances and conveniences. Large group gathering areas (the wood stove great room, kitchen dining area, upper deck) contrast with multiple smaller quieter areas (hot tub screened porch, front deck). The house is well-equipped for all types of cooking (Cuisinart food processor, griddle, toasters, coffee maker, electric teakettle, casserole dishes, small to large pots and pans) and dining (ample plates and dinnerware, goblets and water glasses).
Children are welcome. Dogs are welcome if they can stay near you in the woods and come when you signal, are gentle on the house, and are clean and flea-free. We have a few doggie blankets on the shelf in the front double bedroom. Wash them before using them if you want just in case. (Sorry, no cats because of allergies.) The house is in a wild area: black bears and rattlesnakes live in the area. I have seen one of each one time.
No smoking inside the house.(We don't even have an ashtray!) If you smoke outside, please collect butts and dispose of them in garbage bags.
We have high-speed Internet for email, documents, and some music, but it is too expensive to use to stream movies and high-load media. (We request reimbursement for high-load usage during your stay. One movie uses about 2 GB/movie.)
Please take away garbage if possible, lightly sweep-clean, and return furniture to original locations before leaving. (If you can't take the garbage, please leave it in the construction grade black garbage bags in the garage. Thanks)
Take the sheets and pillowcases off the beds and put them and any used towels and washcloths in the baskets in the closets. That way I can tell which beds and towels were used and which were not. It's a big help. Thank you.
Wash the dishes and put them away please. Wipe out the fridge and also the oven as needed. Put new foil in the bottom of the oven if needed and take out the old foil if food or grease has spilled on it. Thank you so much.
We provide cut firewood for the wood stove inside. Please don't use the cut wood under the deck for the fire pit outside. For fire pit bonfires, you may use any of the dead branches and limbs from the woods around the house. During the dry season, you will need to call to let the local fire department know about bonfires. (Or else they might send a firetruck!) On 20 acres, it's fun to gather firewood with the help of family and friends.
As you leave, please turn the AC up to 83 in the summer or the heat down to 55 in the winter at the thermostat. Please turn off the radiant heat in the lower level if it was turned on. While here, please set the radiant thermostat in the lower level no higher than 60 degrees; otherwise, it heats the whole house at a very expensive rate.
Before you get into the hot tub, please check its levels with a dip stick and add pH adjustors, chlorine, or other ingredients if needed. The are stored inside the wooden steps at the end of the tub. Feel free to dump out water and refill it with fresh water with the hose behind the settee nearby. Please be very careful in the tub and watch out for children. A hot tub can be dangerous. Before you leave, reset the hot tub to EC (heat up + light) and turn it down to 90 degrees in the winter, or turn it off at the electrical panel in the futon room if there is no chance of freezing temperatures. Recover it with the cover. Use the reflective tarp fastened with the bungee cords and held down with rocks please. It blows off in the wind and the cover reflects the heat and keeps it from heating the great outdoors.
Check that all the lights and fans are off inside and outside (except the white "fun" lights around the front door that are on a timer). The switches for outside lights are near the back doors, upstairs and on the main floor, and in the hall near the TV on the main floor.
Check that all the doors are locked, windows are shut, and fans are off. (Sometimes windows escape notice behind curtains and sometimes doors are locked but blow open in the wind if not shut firmly and tugged on to check the locks.)
Thank you for caring for the house so well in our absence. We hope you can come back again and that we can keep the log house nice for your next visit.
Susan maintained excellent contact and provided first-rate information. She responded quickly to any questions we had once we arrived. The home was just as described: well-appointed, clean, and very attractive. Susan provided high quality linens, top-rate appliances, and a wide variety of breakfast foods. In addition, it was wonderful to have condiments available for our cooking needs. This was our first experience with airbnb and if all the hosts are as warm and caring as Susan, we will certainly book with you again.
Excellent location, so many fun and generous amenities! We would stay here again!
There wasn't one thing that could have been any better this Memorial Day weekend at Susan's cabin! The place has EVERYTHING you need and Susan is very thorough in every detail. She even prepared dental floss in the bathroom! This was our second time staying at Susan's. We went hiking and fishing at the park nearby. The town had farmer's market too. In the evening, we BBQ'ed. At night, we enjoyed the hot tub under the moonlight. We will def come back for more fun. Thanks for your hospitality Susan!
We spent a memorable weekend at Susan's home. We arrived to find a clean, spacious and welcoming home to enjoy. The fridge was stocked with breakfast essentials and the kitchen was well equipped to handle our meals. It was exactly as described and more. Our party of 4 adults and 4 teenagers enjoyed the surrounding nature, building fires in the fire pit and making smores, archery, the hot tub and the pool table. We also made the short trip into nearby Berkeley Springs to see "America's First Spa", which was fun.
Susan was a friendly and accommodating host and was available for any questions.
This was the second time my writing group stayed at Susan's place. We loved it last year and we had a great time once again. Susan is a great host. She has everything you could ever need in the house and always leaves treats that make it even more enjoyable. Our group of eight slept comfortably, had plenty of quiet writing spaces, and were able to take relaxing walks around the property. We will definitely be back for a third year.
About the Host, Susan
The house is available that weekend. I just posted some photos yesterday from a long walk yesterday. I see new things almost every day. It already feels like fall in the WV mountains - cool nights, sunny days, and low humidity. Perhaps the leaves will be changing colors by Sept. 21! I hope you and your friends can come and enjoy the house and the mountains.
