ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods
Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon. Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.

Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Hangang River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.

In the aftermath of the Korean War, American soldiers began to stay in the Yongsan Garrison and, consequently, numerous businesses and housing complexes were formed in Yongsan. In preparation for international meetings, the Seoul Asian and Olympic Games, the government strengthened tourism infrastructures and revitalized commerce, prompting international tourists from other parts of the world (such as Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc.) to visit Itaewon.

Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east. Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.

Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more. Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.

  • Our flight was delayed for several hours the day we checked in, and when we arrived at the neibourhood (actually it was on the hill), Youngjin's grandparents came out and guided us to the house, with great kindness. It's regretful that we couldn't say goodbye to Youngjin and his grandparents face to face, and due to our only-six-day stay, we were unable to make deeper cantacts. But YoungJin was always helpful when I had requests and raised questions through Airbnb, and thank you for your recommendation of Chicken:) The apartment is small but enough for 2people to stay, cook, have meals, have a nice bath(except that the bath water is really too hot for us, but it wasn't a big deal). Overall, as my first experience to use Airbnb, it's joyful:)

  • It was definitely a very nice and cosy place but unfortunately, due to our short stay, we did not have much interaction with Youngjin's grandparents. A good location and good facilities to meet our needs, the stay was well enjoyed. The host, Youngjin, was also especially friendly and approachable and never fails to give his best assistance when needed.

  • We both really enjoyed our time at Youngjin's place and would recommend others to go there. The main plus point was the care given by Youngjin and his grandparents who live on the property. We arrived at midnight and left at 6am, but we were happily welcomed and kindly sent on our way. Youngjin was always available if we had any questions. The rooms were basic, but clean and sufficient with almost everything that we needed. We would recommend that Youngjin provides normal sized bath towels. The ones provided were more like hand towels. The place could be more comfortable with at least one armchair. There were straight backed chairs provided. We both slept well, but Western visitors maybe should be warned that the bed was hard, which presented no problems to us, although it might do to others. Seoul is a colder climate than we're used to back home, so some warmer bedding for visitors from tropical areas might be an idea. We thought umbrellas would be helpful so we left ours behind for use by future guests. Thanks very much Youngjin and your grandparents for a wonderful stay.

  • The place was in a great area of itaewon, and the place was spacious. The host grandfather met me and gave me the keys. Everything worked like it should have with no problems. And yongjie was very helpful and got back to me very quick when I asked a question. Very good place for the price. Thank you.

I don't know where to start but everything about Youngjin & family are fantastic! Youngjin is not only a very nice guy but a good friend of mine! Best friend indeed!

I, my family and my friends (15 of us including kids and babies) stayed in 2 properties of Youngjin's. 1 is 1 bedroom and 1 is 3 bedrooms apartment.

14 nights here was too good! On the day we arrived, Youngjin's dad helps us with our tons of luggage.

The rooms are ok enough for us with kitchen and washing machine provided, we feel more like Seoul people. The area is fantastic near to everything.

Youngjin's grandmother was always helpful. Always came to our house, very helpful in everything. As we stayed in hotel before, we didnt know that we supposed to separate the rubbish and recycle items. She always help us on that. At one time, my wife's shoulder feel pain, in a second, as fast as lightning, Youngjin's grandmother (we called her Amoni) came and help to look after my wife. She always talk with us in Korean language even we dont understand. We will miss you Amoni!

Youngjin's family even organized a BBQ dinner for us. The view from the rooftop was fantastic!

And the best part..... the most memorable part...
I was sick. Was really in pain on the 14 days of our staying. Youngjin, his father, his grandmother, his granfather, came for help. My stomach was really in pain. Amoni even tried traditional method to cure me, and after I cannot hold the pain, Youngjin called 119 and the ambulance came to pick me up to hospital. I am very heavy and with Younjin's help, the 3 of 119's guys (Medical Team) successfully lift me from house to ambulance. I was sent to hospital and the doctor discovered that I had a stone on my lower part of stomach. With Youngjin and my family beside, all the treatment went well. Youngjin helps to talk with the doctors.

This family really care about me and us sooo much! I really appreciate it and of course will miss all the memories!

    Till we meet again friend!

  • Strategic place..close to main street of itaewon, easy to get halal foods for moeslem, but you need to walk uphill and's hard if you bring big and lot of luggage like driver didn't want to enter the alley at that time.
Yongjin and family are nice, pick us on the car park near house also help us to call taxi for leaving to airport and help to bring our luggage to the car park.

  • Stayed at Youngjin place on March 2014 and the place is convenient. Itaewon is a good place to stay as it has lots of muslim eating outlets and mart. Its abaout 5mins walk from the subway train station at Itaewon. Youngjin responded to all my questions rapidly and he was very helpful. He help us carry our luggage to the apartment. The apartment is clean and the landlord is warm and friendly. His grandparents upstairs were also very helpful to aid us.
