We are right in the heart of downtown - walking distance to EVERYTHING AWESOME - farmer's market, cafes, bars, music venues, the light rail, museums, Convention Center, ASU downtown, etc. Convenient location for the 1st & 3rd Friday art walk.
This listing is for the private room with breakfast for $55 per night. We have more than one space available so even if you see our calendar full - shoot us a message because we probably have a space open.
Kitchen is not available for use before 9am! Our house is small and we are night owls, so any early morning kitchen activity frankly just sucks. You can walk through the kitchen obviously, grab stuff out of the fridge, get water, etc. but cooking, making smoothies, grinding coffee and other heavy duty stuff like that - please wait until 9 :)
We share one bathroom and have a little dressing area set up aside the bathroom with an additional mirror and space to "get ready".
There is public transport from the airport, or we can pick you up or drop you off at the airport for $15 each way, $30 round trip. Details are sent after you make a reservation.
Here's who currently lives in the house:
Katie: Female - 28 - She is a birth & postpartum doula and placenta crafter (placenta prints, capsules, tinctures, etc.), though she is well outside of the hairy grandmother midwife image that may spring to mind. She likes to create in the kitchen, clean (yes, really), take pictures and travel.
Kris: Male - 37 - He is a former business owner (IT Consulting)/Mortgage Holder/Slave to Society, but has abandoned that load of crap in favor of rediscovering himself and finding something to do everyday that he is passionate about. He likes regrowing his foreskin, playing guitar, throwing a frisbee, traveling and reading biographies of heroin addicted 80s rockers.
We're super outdoorsy, love yoga & meditation, listening to live music, and are into the urban farm scene and green living in general. We are very well connected, communicate smoothly and are respectful and low drama.
Our front yard garden looks like shit right now, but we're hoping to do some more planting now that it's cooler. Currently we have a blood orange tree, a volunteer basil plant, some baby bean stalks, and a bunch of kale sprouts. We have a big chicken coop in the side yard that houses 4 smart and witty birds.
We are 420 friendly, though definitely not into "weed culture". Composting, recycling, reducing and reusing are important to us. We like to know where our food comes from and support the farmers market versus a commercial grocery store as much as we can. We generally try to steer clear of single-use made-to-be-disposable items (coffee cups, to go boxes, plastic silverware, individually packaged snacks, etc.) We do not use chemicals at all in the house. We make our own toothpaste, laundry soap, etc., use natural bars of soap, clean with baking soda and vinegar, etc.
We are passionate about all things birth related. We can teach you how to encapsulate a placenta. We can educate you about the myths of circumcision and about restoring your foreskin. We can enlighten you on anal sex - Kris has even gone so far as to write a guide "The 5 Steps to Being an Ass Master". We love David Deida and enjoy applying his principles to all of the relationships in our lives.
Our house can be very quiet, or it can be bustling full of friends and travelers. This definitely isn't the place for you if you're looking for mostly quiet and lots of privacy.
If you are nodding yes to most of the things below, then you will probably fit in great here!
(and please note the deal breakers)
-Good personal hygiene
-Conscious and aware of themselves and their impact on the world
--Must not use chemicals (no regular shampoos, hair products, toothpastes, laundry soaps, colognes, deodorants, etc.)
-Be into good music - we usually have music on all the time
-Have a sense of cleanliness. We're not obsessively clean and will happily leave a full sink of dishes to go and play in the park, but we also are respectful of our space and like things to be somewhat orderly
-Not freaked out by nudity. None of us are, and it's quite common for us to walk around naked or wear little clothing, (especially in the summer!), change out in the open, leave the bathroom door open while we're showering, etc. If you're reaction to nudity is "Oh god! So sorry!" and you run the other way....then this probably isn't the place for you
-Communication - you must be good at this. Please be strait forward, let us know if something is bothering you, etc. We cannot read your mind and passive aggressive-ness just sucks.
-Kids on a case-by-case basis
-Pets on a case by case basis
-Bonuses - you play an instrument and do some kind of bodywork
-Bad attitudes, negative energy, anger, no self awareness.
-Drinking to the point of getting drunk. A glass of wine is fine, but stumbling around after 5 beers is not cool.
-Personal hygiene products - as we said above, we don't use any chemicals, so as you can imagine - we are super sensitive to all kinds of perfume, cologne, scented soaps, shampoos, and deodorants. Please be respectful of our chemical-free house and use non-toxic soaps and shampoos. Read the label of your product: if it has ingredients you can't pronounce, or wouldn't eat - please don't bring it inside. If you have questions about the products you use, please ask.
-Someone who is into news media. We do not watch the news. We do not read newspapers. We don't talk about politics, the government, etc. If you are into debate on that subject, or ever used to general conversation on the subject - this isn't the right place for you.
-Anyone who thinks that most of this ad is "interesting". None of this is interesting to us. This is all normal for us and this is how we live.
If this sounds like somewhere you'd like to stay then please shoot us a message that's more than a sentence long. We obviously have a lot of info in our profile and like to know about people and what strikes their fancy to want to come and stay here. Please knowledge your acceptance of our no-chemicals/non-toxic house dealio, and let us know what your favorite color is so we know that you read this far :)
We have random schedules and are typically around to hang out and show people around, but please be respectful of the fact that we do work from home, so just because we're home doesn't mean we are available.
We are less than a mile from the nearest light rail stop. We are convenient to multiple bus lines. The bus/light rail website is: (website hidden)
If you LOVE living clean, Katie's house is the spot for you. Great energy, and their holistic lifestyle is perfect for the flexible, positive traveler who needs a great location near downtown. I happily walked to the convention center while being able to avoid big hotel prices during my stay. Would stay again, thanks to Katie for sharing her place on AirBNB!
Katie was an excellent and gracious host, I couldn't have asked for a better airbnb experience! We had dinner together one night on her very charming front porch, and had the most interesting and warm conversations with Katie and her housemate Kris. She provided very helpful suggestions of things to do and places to go in downtown Phoenix and was overall very accommodating! Her place is conveniently located in a very hip neighborhood that is also within a stone's throw from downtown. I would definitely stay here again the next time I am in Phoenix.
I *loved* staying in Katie's tent! Her backyard is very peaceful, dark and quiet, and they have a nice little pad in one tent, and a full air mattress in the other. They have even strung brightly colored Christmas lights up for a bit of soothing, cheerful light! I also really enjoyed their front porch. I had breakfast every morning on a little table surrounded by blooming bouganvilla vine.
My only comment is to stay in the tent over the futon if you are a morning person. They are late night owls and very cheerful!
Katie is awesome. I enjoyed my time with her at the house. The food selection downtown was great as well. I enjoyed experiencing the lifestyle they they live and talking to them about the choices they have made. I hope to visit again soon.
Katie's place was great and perfect for what we needed. Katie was extremely helpful and we had a great night sleep on the comfy bed. I love all the things they do to be sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Excellent Airbnb experience. Katie and Kris have been very nice, relaxed and laid back. They suggested things for me to do and see in Phoenix and even let me share their meals! If you're into that kind of scene or curious to experience it, I definitely recommend staying here.
