The space

A charming 1870's fully restored Freedman's Cottage! This historic property is recognized by the city as historically relevant. One bedroom, heart pine floors, high ceilings, working fireplace! All the modern comforts in a charming setting!

This small group of historic cottages is located just 2 blocks from Savannah's famous Forsyth Park. They are on a quiet lane, away from the busy city streets. Built in the 1870's, these cottages were most likely intended for freedmen, domestic servants or day laborers for the larger & finer houses nearby. They boast many of the details of their larger, more elegant cousins---high ceilings, fireplaces, & heart pine floors. They have been restored to include modern kitchens; central air, back decks & landscaped courtyards.

This is not a chic suburb! It is a diverse neighborhood of students, gays, yuppies, & traditional African American families living side by side. There is low income housing nearby. The neighborhood is still in the process of gentrification--- if this makes you uncomfortable, you should look elsewhere..The area is favored by college students, artists, & young professionals. There is easy walking access to the park, coffee shops, health food/grocery store, the weekly Farmer's Market & several of Savannah's finest restaurants.

Parking is non-metered on streets. You may unload in the lane; but no parking allowed there

The cottage is furnished in an eclectic style, with many antiques as well as more modern pieces. The bedroom is in the back, overlooking the garden area & is furnished with an antique full sized bed and double closets. Original art & local photographs are hung throughout the cottage. The living room boasts a sleep sofa (queen) & writing desk (wi fi available). There are 2 seating areas, a flat screen cable TV & a working fireplace (instructions included). The fully equipped kitchen includes stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher & washer/dryer. Kitchen is stocked with various coffee/tea supplies. There is a full bathroom with tub/shower just off the kitchen.

This cottage is ideal for a single person (ready to write that novel??---a best seller was written 2 doors down!) or as romantic getaway for a couple. The sofa bed can accomodate up to 2 additional people, but be aware that this is a small space!! COTTAGE IS NOT CHILD PROOFED & NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 15 YRS!!. Due to guests allergies, pets are not permitted on this property! There is a second listing with an identical floor plan just 2 doors down! (Miss Minnie's)--please check it out...if you have a larger group, you may want to try & secure both cottages!

Parking is non metered & on the street; rarely a problem. Public transport is steps away. Please note that parking in the lane is Illegal in Savannah--there is ample parking on the surrounding streets.

Step back in time & live like humble Savannahians at the turn of the century--but with all the modern conveniences!

Pricing may vary slightly for special events, on the weekends, & in tourist season in Savannah (Spring & Fall)...

full service apartment. all modern conveniences. fully air conditioned, back patio.

Guest access

full service apartment. all modern conveniences. fully air conditioned, back patio.
Please let me know an arrival time, so I can meet you at the cottage. special key arrangements can be made for late/odd time arrivals. It s recommended that you arrive during daylight hours. Remember that you are coming to a strange city, to an unmarked lane location; fumbling with keys & lights in the dark...Daytime is better

Interaction with guests

I generally meet all guests at arrival to give them the keys & provide orientation. Also available to answer questions & for emergencies..

Other things to note

Please note that all of these cottages are located on a "lane"---which is an unmarked alleyway between streets. Please don't disturb our neighbors by knocking on the wrong door when arriving!! These were freedman's cottages and/or servants quarters---they are NOT BRICK---they are NOT TWO STORIES....they are modest one story cottages! Please make sure you are in the right location!
* I have other cottages in this same location:

Please note that this cottage is priced for 2 people sharing a double bed...If there are only 2 in your party & you want to use additional linens for the sofa bed, you will be expected to pay an additional linen expense of $25--which represents the cost of having the sheets professionally laundered & ironed...

This cottage is very cute & perfect for a nice & quiet stay in Savannah. Was right next to Forsyth Park, and everything in downtown Savannah was within a walkable distance. Rick was such a great host and was very easy to get a hold of for checking in and information about the surrounding area!

The house was a beautifully decorated spot, super clean and great location! Rick was extremely helpful giving us loads of information and travel tips. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely reach out to Rick again when back in Savannah.

Rick's cottage was just perfect and exactly what my partner and I were looking for. Rick was great with communicating and was there waiting for us when we got in. Rick was full of information and had resources available such as maps and brochures. The cottage was small and cozy but the high ceilings made it feel more open than it was. The cottage was comfortable, had everything we needed (even a hairdryer that I forgot to pack!), and it was located in a great diverse neighborhood close to the park and Sentient Bean (coffee shop and cafe) which we frequented. We really enjoyed staying in a part of history rather than a hotel. The cottage was authentic, had eclectic decor, and we really enjoyed the small back patio in the mornings as well. This was everything we could have wanted for our little vacation and more.

Great base to experience Savannah from. Rick provides everything you need, and his communication was excellent! The cottage is within walking distance to most places, but there's also a free bus service nearby incase you can't stand the heat. It's also located on a quiet lane away from the main streets so noise is never an issue. The cottage itself is nice and cosy and has been tastefully decorated. A real nice 'home' feel to it, rather than just a bland apartment. My only gripe was the very creaky bed which kept waking me and my partner up whenever one of us moved. We like our sleep so not sure we could have dealt with it much longer than our 4 night stay. Other than that, I would highly recommend this if you're thinking of a stay in this amazing town!

The cottage was quaint but needs some updated furniture for comfort issues. Rick made it easy coming from out of town, really didn't need for any supplies and maps and attractions info helped us plan our day!

The cottage was charming with its wood plank floors, fireplace, and quaint garden. The accommodations are very comfortable and clean. Rick was a great host. The parking is a bit away from the cottage, but still reasonable.

Rick User ProfileRick is a superhost.

A regular guy. Easy going & laid back. Love to travel, read, & hike. A film buff for indies & foreign..Fluent in both Portuguese & Spanish. LGBT welcome.

My former life includes 20 years in NYC in a banking/finance career. Love the big city & all it offers, but also appreciate living on a smaller scale in a place like Savannah.

I try to get to Europe for a few weeks at least once a year & will gladly trade travel stories with other travel aficionados. After grad school, I bought a one way ticket & lived in Brasil for 2 years; working as an english teacher & living with brazilian students in a pension. Also traveled to Argentina, Paraguay, & Uruguay during that time...
