One of the most notable gems in Los Angeles' vintage charm is this jungle-drenched grouping of cottages built by Charlie Chaplin in the 1920s as a very centrally-located village for his crewmen. This fairytale of a Shire has housed many familiar names over the years, from Marilyn Monroe to now-a-days Patrick Dempsey.
Giving the mood of a European get-away, the complex's architecture boasts hand-cut stable doors, wood beams, bespoke windows (some with large Tiffany stained-glass scenes), and medieval-style staircases with oxidized copper rooster wind-turns atop white-washed towers.
The village is tucked away behind a wooded gate on a tree-lined street a surprising few minutes from the hustle and bustle. There is one of every grocery store within three blocks, and to be in the grid of Santa Monica Blvd / Sunset / Melrose & Fairfax / La Brea is an unbeatable location as per proximity to anything. Public transit buses whiz down SMB every few minutes. Maximum twenty minutes of drive time to every corner of Los Angeles, too.
This particular second story wood-paneled loft has been called home by such greats as Rudolph Valentino, and with its ceiling beams, built-in nooks and bay window overlooking a fairy-lit courtyard, it has the feel of a Swiss chateau or Yosemite lodge.
-The QUEEN-SIZED BED has a removed-from-the-world feel with a window that overlooks gnome rooftops and exotic trees and palms
-The optional fold-out SINGLE COT can be set up near the windowseat and used as further sleeping space for those that like to wake to sunlight.
-There is one BATHROOM with a tiled shower and hand-built shelves.
-There is an OFFICE tuck reminiscent of a writer's retreat cove, and a unique decorative FIREPLACE filled with candle pillars to really cement the cozy feel.
-The KITCHEN is well-equipped for gourmet fun, with the exception of a microwave and dishwasher (we keep it trendily old-fashioned here).
-In place of a home TV, there are cozy historic landmark sports bars (Formosa, Jones) just down the block for any shows or games you might be used to watching.
-WiFi and street PARKING are of course included.
...If you have read the House Rules and are game to respect them and enjoy a relaxing stay, go ahead and book any open dates on the calendar.
Welcome to your hobbit cottage home!

Whether I am in town and taking care of all cleaning and needs-response myself, or out of town with a quick-response phone number and neighbor on-call for any in-person assistance that may be necessary, your keys are hidden for you to be autonomous with entry/exit, and most details about the cottage are very well explained with signs throughout the house. Should you want more host attention, just say the word! Otherwise I tend to think guests appreciate a more hands-off "this is your house while you're here" attitude. :)
You can't get more central in Los Angeles than West Hollywood. It is perfectly equidistant to every corner of the city, and has one or more of anything you'd need as far as necessities for anything errand-like.
Santa Monica Blvd is the nearest cross-street, and is the main thoroughfare from one side of the city to the other. The buses are fast and convenient. There is as well a train stop at Hollywood & Highland, which is an ambitious walk, short bus ride, or even quicker cab ride away from your nearby big intersection of La Brea & Santa Monica Blvd.
Unless otherwise requested and confirmed, check-in is 4:00pm or later, and check-out is 11:00am or earlier. This ensures your cottage is mighty tidy for when you arrive if there are back-to-back bookings. Thanks!
Whilst there are main streets a one-minute walk away that do not require permits (Fountain Ave, Santa Monica Blvd), your sidestreet requires a residential pass overnight (7pm-7am). One guest permit parking pass is provided for this use, and hanging it from your rearview mirror is a must. Also please note that street cleaning on one side of the street is Monday 9am-11am, and Tuesday on the opposite side of the street during the same hours. You may need to branch out to other sidestreets or the main streets if you're one of the last ones home on a Sunday or Monday night. Act like a New Yorker and walk those few extra minutes! ;)
And please please please remember to return the parking pass to its hook inside the cottage door upon checking out, otherwise it will need to be replaced and the city's fee of $50 for each will need to be assessed to you. Bah!
Remembering that this complex is gently historic, the walls are not as thick and insulated as newer buildings, so footsteps carry loudly atop your downstairs neighbor, and as per any other loud noises, I've equally encouraged the cottages around you to be respectful during appropriate hours. PLEASE TRY AND UPHOLD A NO-SHOES POLICY as often as you can while inside. This helps with noise while also creating a cleaner environment! And generally, this is NOT A PARTY-FRIENDLY PROPERTY, so thanks in advance for meeting your friends out and about at any of the fabulously close by trend hubs! :)
[More specifically, this hopefully goes without saying, but should the guests act in an audibly inappropriate way as judged by the neighboring Shire community during their stay, a $50 disturbance fee will absolutely be requested upon check-out, and we reserve the right to professionally ask people to leave.]
What is in your cottage upon arrival is there for use on an in-need basis; Meaning there is soap and shampoo and conditioner, etc., but please only use it if you forgot to bring your own. There are usually plenty of foodstuffs in the fridge and coffee in a canister, and if you use any staples to the point of replenishing, please leave a visible note for me so I know to replace it for myself or future guests in plenty of time for its next use. [And as for perishable food, guests tend to leave what they purchased and couldn't finish, so check expiration dates and please join the Guests Against Food Wasting brigade. Gobble it up!]
Per the furniture and other usable items, this home is cozy in size, and everything therefore has its particular place; If you move anything around, please oh please RETURN THINGS TO THEIR ORIGINAL PLACEMENT upon leaving. The cleaning fee is for simple tidying like laundry and vacuuming and not redecorating, dish washing, or item hunting. Thanks hugely!
While many guests have been very friendly with their neighboring tenants and everyone is lovely, the frequency with which this cottage is rented has started to wear on those that permanently live here and would actually prefer to be able to use their "yard" without having to meet new people. While the neighbors often convene and enjoy themselves, I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't mind considering the courtyard more-or-less off limits to guests. It's not that there isn't the potential for friendly conversation and new friends, it's simply that they've been inundated and are requested a break. :) There are plenty of gorgeous parks with BBQs and great sitting spots very nearby. Poinsettia Park and Plumber Park are two blocks away.
There is a new cat around the Shire grounds that tries to sneak into the cottage when the door is left open on sunny, breezy days. As allergies are something I strive to cater to, please do everything you can to help train that cat to not come indoors. Hissing, clapping, spray bottle (under the sink), whatever you deem appropriate, if she should ever come around during your stay.
As encouraged above in AMENITIES, the hotel-style cleaning service for which you're charged a modest fee includes bathroom hygienic areas, counter/floor/carpet clean, bed-making, and laundry. There is a small window of turnaround time between guests to make this possible. If there is much to tend to beyond that, you will be charged double the cleaning fee for the extra time, chores, and deep-clean if necessary.
Never any at all inside, please; Thank you. These wooden walls retain everything, and the fact that it still remains useful is from those before you not letting the room smell like smoke.
I hope these requests aren't deterring, as really they're in place as assurances that this cottage is comfortable and clean for you upon arrival, and that the neighbors remain sympathetic to your enjoyment!
I look forward to readying the place for you...
We didn't meet Annie but everything was very easy. Annie's house is perfect and very nice it's a kind of fairy tale's house. It's not so big but enough to a comfortable stay. When you arrive at the appartment everything is very well indicated! The kitchen was quite well equipped and the neighbourhood is so quiet.
The area is so comfortable and the parking permit is perfect. If you go to LA by car (which is imprescindible) is great to have a place to park without problem. The place is quite near to the hall of fame and you can go by foot.
The only thing is the way to get the keys of the appartment... we arrived a night and it was as we were in a 007 film... but that's what you expect of Los Angeles, isn't it?
We got to meet Annie who was so lovely and gave us a lovely warm welcome. We enjoyed our stay in her place. It is small, but very quaint, cute and homey. Not very big for three people, but I stayed there with my parents and we get along great, so it wasn't a problem. Information about everything was great and thorough and it was easy to find the place and easy to find parking (just don't park against traffic as our 66 dollar fine taught us ;) - they are not reinforcing that in Denmark, so we didn't think it would be a problem). Location is amazing! We walked to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There is a supermarket a few minutes away and a fantastic sandwich place close by on Santa Monica Blvd. You can't really beat that location! Thanks Annie :)
Petite difficulté pour trouver les clefs. Appartement très agréable et convivial. Quartier sympathique et tranquille. Bonne adresse.
Annie is a delight - so pleasant and gave us a lovely warm welcome. The stay was wonderful - an area of LA we love and a cute charming wee pad with everything we needed - thank you Annie :)
Annie is super friendly and accommodating. A very beautiful place to stay in a great neighbourhood.
Great night! Beautiful space, thoughtfully decorated and just a real 'pure' feel to the entire experience. Annie was thorough and detail-oriented, which made the check-in/out process almost too easy. I know 'charming' is a word thrown around often on Airbnb, but that's exactly the way this place should be described. Definitely recommend it. The place's historical significance only makes it all the more impressive.
Annie was very accommodating and sweet! I didn't have to worry about lack of communication she was very clear on the directions and made it easy for us.
