A “magical getaway” w/ “hidden treasures” and “eye candy”, a ”perfect respite”. It’s the prime spot! Super cozy inside. Great art! Exercise on the front porch or walk in our serene neighborhood on sidewalks. Walk a few blocks to pick up food or eat on a patio at one of Ferndale’s many foodie destinations (1/2 mile/8 min walk). Or eat dinner on the stone porch! Pilot episode HGTV’s “What You Get For The Money”, SEEN Magazine’s “5 Cool Detroit Airbnb’s”, cover story “Detroit News Homestyle”.

The space
The home is 2 separate, private spaces. The Airbnb is the main 1400 SF house with its own private entrance and front covered stone porch. We live in the apartment below, we have our own private entrance in the back. Artsy rock house is an all-stone house in a beauuutiful historic neighborhood with tree-lined streets, close to Detroit. We think the location is perfect because you are in the first village outside of Detroit, where there are lots of restaurants and grocery stores. Our historic home was built in 1928. All the rocks came from the Pontiac River and were carted here down Woodward Avenue by horse and buggy. In the rainy months, it is said the stones were carried by hand down our street. The builder is called a “genius” by my stone mason. The walls on some parts of our the Rock House are about 18-24 inches!

The Rock House does have many extra luxuries over other short term rentals, that’s because we also live in the space when we don’t have guests. Extra large soft towels, and big beds with soft linens. Large chaise couches that are great for relaxing (not cheap furniture). We have comics books, and a book rack of regular books. We have lots of art and interesting items from our travels that we would like to share with you. We believe staying in an Airbnb is an experience, and we want you to have fond memories of Ferndale and the Rock House. We want you to feel at home and relaxed.

I'm Tamela Ekstrom. I own HAVEN Real Estate + Design, and I am a real estate agent/decorator/artist. My husband is Evan Derian, he is a graphic designer/illustrator and comic book artist. We do live in the lower level if you need anything during your stay, we are close...however you have your own private 6 rooms of space + the private entrance and as you can see from the reviews, we leave you alone to enjoy your stay. We invite you to experience Detroit with the Rock House as your home base. Some articles on the decor of the rock house can be found online, the Detroit News cover and article can be seen. under "Detroit News" + "Artistry in Motion". We also have social media pages with videos of the space and many more photos. Because I am a designer, the space does evolve through the year, we do move the artwork around and we do get new pieces so it may look a little different each visit, but the vibe is always the same: cozy, cool, and comfortable. The art-work is created by us or our friends, and is available for purchase. Soon we will have an online shop site, but for now please Inquire within. The current pieces range in price from $200-$1200.

Guest access
If you are booking for someone else, let us know when you book, it needs to be approved by us. No exceptions.

You would have a 1400 sf HOUSE with private front entry, HUGE front porch, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, dining room, living room, sunroom, FULL KITCHEN with stainless appliances: fridge, stove, dishwasher, coffee maker, instant hot water for tea. Laundry service available through Soapy Pete’s pick up or Huntington dry cleaning also picks up and does laundry. There are also local laundromats by the pound, or laundromat self-serve.

We do stay in the lower level of the property, our own separated apartment with separate private entrance. Smoking is outside only, front porch is fine. 4 guests max unless you get an ok from us. We're fine with kids staying here, however, the home is not child-proofed and we do live below. If you do have kids, it may not be a good fit if they like to run around a lot. We ask that kids don’t jump off of furniture. No cats. One small dog (under 25 lbs.) or possibly 2 small dogs. $75 pet fee per pet, per trip. Must discuss and get approval from me in writing prior to bringing a pet to the house. If you have a service animal, please provide the documentation at booking. No territorial breeds or mixes.

NO PARTIES. During COVID, we are offering this as a way to escape, but the home is available to the listed guests only. There isn’t a great way to social distance with more than 4 people, so we would like to keep it at that number and prefer it to be people that are staying in the home.

Basic cable. Free HBO MAX and Netflix on the Apple TV. $10/hour for early check in or late check out. With COVID, we do clean prior to your stay, using the CDC Airbnb checklist. We do have our cleaning person that you can hire for cleaning during your stay.

There are security cameras on the exterior of the home, none would be facing any interior spaces. There is a video doorbell on the front door facing out.

This is a house with the main level and lower level, 2 separate spaces. The main level is the Airbnb. It’s 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, 2 living rooms, full kitchen. 1300 sf. It's your private space and is separated with a locked door in between the two spaces. The hvac is shared. We are healthy. We do have anti-viral 3m air filters. We can send a video when we change those out for you. You also have your private front entrance with sole use of the large stone porch. If we are here, you won't see us, we won't see you unless you need something as our spaces are separate. Feel free to ask us anything, we're happy to help!
By renting the stone house, you agree to:
-Not book for someone else without letting us know at booking, let us know the complete number of guests and the full names of people staying overnight. Booking for someone else and not staying here is a violation of Airbnb rules and you could forfeit your rent paid if we don’t agree to it ahead of time. We do have a video doorbell.
- Show your id’s at the door at check-in.
- Take shoes off at the front door.
- Turn lights out when you leave or go to bed.
-Quiet on porch anytime, but especially between 9 pm to 9 am. Voices + laughter carry down the street. We want you to enjoy the awesome porch and your trip but be respectful of the neighbors too. Inside: Quiet after midnight.
- Not smoke anything inside of the stone house (not even vape—step onto the private covered porch to smoke).
- Not move furniture, paintings, etc.
- No events, no parties. No filming or professional photo shoots unless agreed in writing ahead of time. We just want to know what’s going on, who is in the home. Max 8 ppl at any time. Only 4 staying over night, if they are listed in booking request. No giving the key or code to anyone outside of the people booked.
- Damage to property or stolen items will be reconciled.
- Lost keys/lock change will be billed back to guest ($125).
- No candles left unattended.
- Additional fee for pets. We like to approve dogs at booking. We will refund if you don't end up bringing your pooch. $75 Pet fee applies. We will charge it sometime between booking and the end of your stay.
- At booking, let us know max guests. 4 max adults sleeping here unless we agree to more, and we want to talk about this at booking. If you book 2 guests staying overnight, keep it at 2 guests, etc. unless you message us.
-All guest’s full names need to be given at booking.
-Minimum 2 nights on weekends, 3 night holiday weekends (unless last-minute booking in which case 1 night may be ok up to 48 hours before booking)
-You should have a social media page with a lengthy history and/or at least 5 five star reviews to book with us.

Location

Ferndale, Michigan, United States

Ferndale is perfect for staying in or going out. At this time in March 2020, it’s good since we have so many restaurants and grocery stores and cvs and Walgreens etc. it’s located next to highways and many hospitals.

Ferndale is an artsy foodie enclave right outside of Detroit. It's a walkable neighborhood and it's just a few blocks to eclectic, fun, downtown Ferndale. There are lots of bars and restaurants within a few blocks! RustBelt market is a MUST SEE if you are here for the weekend and love homemade goods and Detroit artwork. Flytrap and Toast have excellent breakfasts and Imperial, Public House, and The Emory are favorites for dinner. New Greenspace Cafe has vegan food and yummy drinks. Go Comedy has open mics, there is also the Ringwald playhouse, with lots of interesting events.

Hello there! A little about us: Evan + I grew up here in Detroit but I've also lived all over the US: San Francisco, LA, Kansas City, Tulsa, Dallas and Detroit. I own HAVEN real estate + design, and I sell houses, lofts, apartments. My husband, Evan Derian, is a graphic designer by day and a comic book artist/graphic novelist by night. His comic series “Miserable Americans” is for sale on his website (and soon digitally) and you may see some printed copies upstairs. All of the art work in the home is for sale from $200 to $1200. Inquire within. We don't have kids but we do have pets and are in love with our 2 little pups. We basically hang out along the Woodward corridor, in Detroit, Ferndale or Royal Oak....poking around for a vintage market or an art show or something fun going on (most art work in the house is created by Evan or me, or our friends). Ferndale is walkable and packed with hip restaurants offering locally sourced food. The Rock House Detroit is the perfect place to be to see it all!

If we are in town when you stay, and would like to meet me or us or have me show you around, I'm happy to do that. If you just want to be alone, no problem! We have lots of tips and info about Detroit and it’s suburbs, and being a Realtor, I know about all the neighborhoods. I’d love to help you find a new home if you may be moving here!
