This beautiful, private, detached villa with stunning mountain and sea views has served memorably as the family summer home for the past 30 years. As one of the original constructions on the very tranquil, cosmopolitain urbanisation, the villa has undergone many transformations and improvements over the years, adding on extra sleeping, living and recreational space. The ideal hillside location with it's cooling breezes from the valley, makes it the perfect place to relax, entertain and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and incredible climate of the Costa Blanca.
A short 5 minute drive from the Calpe beach, port and town, the villa is ideally situated to enjoy all of the required amenities and elements associated with a Spanish beach vacation, without feeling the overwhelming pressure of the busy town.
The spacious villa has two floors and is surrounded by numerous terraces and dining areas.
The seperate 1 bedroom apartment below has it's own kitchen, bathroom and indoor barbeque and banqueting area, as well as utility room with washing mashine.
Upstairs has a multi functional entrance hall/breakfast room/games area with impressive views of both the mountains, sea and the Calpe Rock (Penon d'Ifach). Then there is a cosy tv/family room with wood fireplace, ideal for catching up on the sports results, watching a movie or keeping the kids entertained whilst preparing dinner. The fully equiped kitchen has a service hatch that opens to the dining area and has access to the back terrace garden with additional breakfast and dining facilities.
There are 2 twin rooms with shared bathroom and a master bedroom with en-suite and private sunbathing terrace. Upstairs also has a large more formal cocktail lounge with wood fireplace and patio doors that open up to the 'gin and tonic terrace' with breathtaking views of the Burnia Mountains and the Jalon Valley.
There is a full size, heated swimming pool with large sundeck and lounging area, along with excellent barbeque facilities and beautiful gardens with fruit trees and gigantic palms.
The villa has a familiar, lived in feel to it, and gives the impression that it has definitely been used in the past for entertaining and seen its fare share of good times!
My wife and I spent our honeymoon at the 'Kubla Khan' - Chirripó Retreat hosted by Angus. It was an awesome experience! We enjoyed Angus and Tania very much; they were very helpful with all our questions. Angus provided lots of fun things to do: we visited the secret gardens, had lunch at the trout farm, hiked up to the national park, went to the beach, shopped at the farmers market, bought swiss cheese and chocolate up the road from the house, enjoyed the hot springs, and relaxed at the house and down by the river.
Angus would check in with us to make sure we had found everything we were planning on doing each day. He was helpful with directions for us to get back to the airport. The house and the gardens were magnificent. We used some fresh peppers and lettuce from the garden as we cooked throughout the week. We also enjoyed the rushing sound of the water each night.
The 'Kubla Khan" - Chirripó was an awesome honeymoon get-away. We would recommend it to anyone who loves being outside and wants to get away and enjoy the mountains of Costa Rica. Pura Vida. Thanks so much Angus and Tania!

We had such a lovely time at Kubla Khan! The location is fantastic if you are looking for a remote getaway or leg of your trip where modern conveniences are not uncomfortably far off but removed enough to feel nestled into a mountain with the main white noise being the constant rush of a deliciously cold river. Angus & Tania's home is something out of a Dwell magazine featuring Costa Rica. Everything is signature, specific, well chosen, beautiful and useful. Open concept slice of heaven, great for relaxing. The grounds strangely made me feel like I was in a Nordic fairytale at times with beautiful rocks and stones buried in green and lush plant life, leading you to the river, to the house, to the garden. Magical. The river is just off their backyard. The view from both the lower and upper balconies are soaring. We hiked the Cloudbridge Reserve with its many waterfalls. Splashed around at the base of, I think, the Julia waterfall toward the front of the hike. The cold water was refreshing this time of year when the Dominical Ocean can be almost too warm to be enjoyable. Also, bathing in the thermal hot springs (not sulfurous) on a hot day was a cooling and refreshing activity. There is a fun and frisky cat to play with as well. And if you have an understanding of Costa Rican bugs you feel very, very lucky to have her around: Your own guardian and host of the premises. Thanks Angus & Tania for making our trip the fantastic adventure it was. We will be back to hike Chirripo next time!
A wonderful, relaxing house in a cluster of small villages within walking distance. Perfect for climbing Chiripi (which was our main objective on the trip). It's also perfect for lounging due to the open concept that lets in gentle breezes through the house. Hammocks, a spacious terrace, privacy, and a view of a rushing river and jungle makes it ideal for relaxing the day away and reading. The location may be too remote for some, so do your research ahead of time. It was ideally located for our Costa Rica mountain adventure.
You may also get a cat when you rent, which is always a plus. Watch her catch bugs and sprint like a tiger through the wild garden.
Furthermore, the owners (Angus and Tanya) are easy going and friendly, and will offer helpful advice on the area.
We're already planning a return trip.
Our trip to Costa Rica was VERY last minute (as in, we decided to go and left within 48 hours!) Luckily, we came upon Angus's listing for Kubla Khan - which was truly the highlight of the trip. It's a beautifully-designed place in a natural setting that is beyond compare. Jawdroppingly beautiful.
Angus was extremely helpful and responsive, and the local caretaker (as well as the locals) could not have been nicer or more helpful. Afterwards we went on to a touristier spot in Manuel Antonio, and both of us agreed that our time in Canaan was the special gem of the trip. Thank you Angus and Tania! We won't soon forget our stay.
This place is truly magical, and words and pictures simply can't do justice the beauty and serenity of the home and surrounding mountains. Though you must traverse a dirt road to get there, the payoff is undeniable. Nightly fireflies, fog rolling in then out to reveal stars like you've never seen and the soft roar of the river below to put you to sleep...it's heaven. Also, we were instantly, madly in love with Smooki, the resident cat. Thank you Angus and Tania, for an unforgettable experience!
Kubla Khan. Where to begin, our jaws dropped as we stepped onto the grounds. Our energy lifted and the dream began. Everywhere you look, lush vegetation, fruit trees, a garden, and of course the magnificent roaring river. Stepping into the house, we were awed by the open concept and breathtaking views. A gorgeous bathroom, excellent kitchen and a heavenly bedroom. Truly DIVINE!
The best part of our trip was Miss Smooki, the kitty. What a character!!! Everyday we enjoyed sunbathing, cat naps, cooking and playing all around the property. She created a really fun environment for us, and we miss her already.
Angus and Tania, we are so thankful to have had the opportunity to stay in your magical palace. Pura Vida. Namastè. Arigato! X
This was absolutely one of the most amazing places we've ever stayed - in any country! The house and the property are absolutely stunning (the pictures do it no justice) and the town is very charming. Angus was very helpful and informative on where to go and what to do - my only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. We will definitely be staying at Kubla Khan again as soon as possible!
The house is Canaan was great; it may have been the best part of our trip to Costa Rica! Forget the beach, if you want some real relaxation, venture off the beaten path and spend some time in a hammock by a roaring river, which is just steps from the house. We had total seclusion if we wanted it, and Angus and Tania were great guides and company when we wanted to see the sights. If you want to stay in an awesome house, with the best "sound machine" imaginable, avoid tourists, and get away from it all, I highly recommend this place!
