Guest Access

Adjacent to Blue Ridge Mountain Yurt accessed by following a well lit path through the small woodland are the shared seasonal salt water swimming pool and year-round hot tub. The area is surrounded by a high tensile fence with latching and chained gates. In the interest of safety we ask that the gates remained closed and latched at all times. There is no lifeguard on duty so swimming and tubing is at your own risk. Please no diving or glass in the enclosure.

Farm Tours are available upon request. Farm animals can be unpredictable. The barn and animals are only to be visited in the company of a member of the Cair Paravel Farm Family.

Interaction with Guests

We love to greet our "Yurters" when they arrive and show them around the yurt as well as provide suggestions for local hikes, activities, and dining.

The Cair Paravel Farmhouse is just a short walk down the mountain though since we are an operating farm we are frequently out and about. Yurters can call or text and we will respond as soon as we are able.

The Neighborhood

There are many area attractions and activities- hiking in the Shenandoah National Park, visiting Monticello or Montpelier, following the Monticello Wine Trail or the Brew Ridge Trail, and checking out the work of Virginia Artisans in the local shop: Noon Whistle Pottery. We are close to both Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. For other activities and attractions check out our guidebook.

If you are considering hiking take a look at Hiking Upward. The site has great maps and descriptions of the trails as wells as a great rating system.

Getting around

The nearest airport is the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport. Rental cars are available at the airport. To reach the farm is an easy half hour drive. A rural transportation service, the Greene County Transit, operates Monday through Saturday.

Other Things to Note

Cair Paravel is a sustainable farm featuring organic gardening, dairy goats, poultry, sheep, alpacas, turkeys and pigs. We pasture raise our animals supplementing their diet with local non-gmo feed and the animals are processed by a USDA inspected abattoir. Ask about the various farm products we may have available. We have chicken, sausage, pork, lamb, and eggs. Martha bakes fresh bread for the family as well as produces goat milk products- soaps and lotions.

If you do not want to cook consider arranging for a special dinner. Our Farmstead kitchen is licensed and inspected by the Virginia Department of Health and we are a licensed Bed and Breakfast. Whitt is a retired chef who is able to offer either our Farmhouse meal or a special order dinner. Just send us a message through AirBnB to make arrangements for the dinners at least 48 hours in advance of your visit.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • This was our second stay in the Yurt. The first time we came in the winter, and now this time - July 4th weekend. Each time was wonderful, but I must admit that the summer was a great experience. The farm was so full and lush with greens, the pool was open and refreshing, the days were long and full and the weather was perfect for being outside. The Yurt was warm during the day forcing you to put your hiking boots back on or go for another swim, which made the 3 day vacation seem like a week. Whitt and Martha are amazing hosts and the food was perfect - this time we ordered a special meal on Sat night which was fantastic. I highly recommend having at least one evening meal prepared by Whitt. We already have made our reservation for the fall - as we look to experience the farm and the woods in a different season. This is truly a special place and one we are so glad we found!

    Response from Whitt:

Thanks for the heads up on the WI-FI. We are having a separate service installed just for the vacation lodging and hope that will take care of the problem.

  • What an excellent host! We felt right at home at the yurt. Can't beat beautiful surroundings and delicious farm-to-table dinners. We already miss this place!

  • The yurt is one of the most special places our family has been. We love the solitude, the salt water pool, touring the farm and the hospitality. Whitt and Martha made amazing food for us and were very gracious with our dietary needs. We hope to make this an annual tradition.

  • The crew at Cair Paravel Farmstead was terrific, per usual. This was my second trip there and the space and hosts did not disappoint. Whitt, Martha and their family welcomed us with a food tray full of fresh fruit, cheeses, breads and humus as soon as we arrived. They made us a hearty breakfast for the two nights my group of friends and I stayed there and were more than happy to "loan" us some vegetable oil for cooking and to-go baggies to take home the left overs we prepared in their well-stocked kitchen. The yurt is a sanctuary and the hot tub was a wonderful reprieve. I will definitely be making it back again but hopefully it will not take an entire year.

  • Staying at this yurt was by far the most unique airbnb experience I've had to date! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with immense warmth and hospitality. The space itself is beautiful and awesome, but the folks behind the Cair Paravel farm were what made the trip memorable.

It was such a treat to have a farm-to-table dinner and breakfast delivered to the yurt by Whitt, who used to be an executive chef. And hearing about the family's and property's history on the farm tour was the cherry on top.

So much care and attention was put into making us feel welcome and I couldn't have asked for a better getaway from the city. I highly recommend staying here to everybody out there. :)

  • We had a great experience at the yurt! Everything was clean, well organized, and just as presented in the listing. The hosts were very nice and generously showed us around the property after checkout. They even let us picnic on the porch and use the restroom, ice, etc., and gave us detailed directions for a nearby hike when we arrived a couple of hours before check-in time. What a unique little adventure for my family -- we'd love to come again soon!

  • most amazing slice of heaven I've ever stayed! my boyfriend. and I had a blast between the pool the hot tub and discovering the coolest yurt ever. the design is so beautiful with local artist and yet has every convince of city living! I will definitely be returning but this time we will stay longer!

I almost don't wanna share this amazing find but it too great to stay quit about! Whitt made the best breakfast and was a wonderful host. the cheese, fruit and nut platter upon arrival was yummy!! I hope if you choose to stay at the yurt you have even half the experience we did because that would still blow your mind!

  • Whitt was great and the yurt was very nice and comfortable. Whitt gave us a tour of the farm, which has friendly goats and cute pigs and chickens. Also the breakfasts were great and he happily accommodated our vegetarian.

I will point out that the yurt is a lot more remote than we realized. It's a 10-15 minute drive up a windy, narrow, gravel road. It's also at least a 45 minute drive from any significant activities or businesses. So that could be either a positive or negative for you.

  • Wonderful accomodations in a beautiful setting! Couldn't have been happier with our experience! The yurt was fantastic; the best yurt we have stayed in to date. The farm is busy, busy this time of year. Yet Whitt and Martha still had time for us; getting us situated, serving up delicious, farm-fresh fare, chatting with us when time allowed. Their farm interns were also very gracious, showing us around the working farm and letting us assist with feeding and watering of animals. Also enjoyed the pool greatly! Only wish we could have stayed longer and hope to come back to see and enjoy this place in other seasons! Maybe Christmas in a yurt one year?!!? :)

  • When we first arrived, it was a foggy spring evening. Whitt had lit up the yurt with twinkling lights. There was a tray of fresh cheeses from the farm, crackers and fruit awaiting us in the fridge. The yurt is beyond charming and perfectly equipped for a getaway. We took advantage of the pool and hot tub every day. Whitt's breakfasts were delicious. Don't sleep on his handmade pasta shells either. All in all, the yurt was a very magical escape.

Retired Executive Chef turned Farmer
I am a retired executive Chef who has worked in all types of hospitality environments for 35 years. Managing a small country Inn and restaurant for 12 of those years has given me ample experience to create and manage our unique Yurt B&B as well as our other lodgings. My family and I are in process of creating a self supporting and sustainable farm homestead and lodgings and we offer welcome to one and all. In addition to our enterprises we are grateful stewards of 60 acres of spectacular mountain land, most of which is as undisturbed as possible with an easily accessible nature trail winding throughout the property. As a working farm we also have a multitude of gentle critters and an abundance of home grown foods. Having grown up in Hawaii I know well about relaxing and enjoying life and all it has to offer, and believe we have created a place where everyone can share in the same. Join us!
