The space
¨THE BitterSweet Retreat¨ is located on a crystal clear creek just steps from some of the best fishing on the Bitterroot and just seventeen miles from Lost Trail Powder Mountain Ski Resort and Chief Joseph Cross Country Ski Trail System. The “hand-crafted", custom built home includes reclaimed, rough sawn floors, hand-peeled beams, woodwork and decks and hardware made by a local blacksmith. You will enjoy Old Hickory and handmade furniture, original artwork and sculpture pieces throughout the house. You will have full access to our kitchen, dining, living room and deck space.

The extra spacious, second-story room is adjacent to a two room bathroom with double sinks and vanity and dressing area in one room and tub/shower and toilet in the other. There is also a guest bathroom at the bottom of the stairs available for guests' use. We pay close attention to maintaining an exceptionally clean accommodation. While we do allow pets on our main floor where hardwood is easy to clean. No pets at any time are allowed on the second floor where your room is carpeted.

We have a rollaway bed with good mattress we can provide for an additional guest.. . There is a $10.00 charge for each additional guest beyond two. Up to two extra are allowed in the room given we have prior notice. This includes children of any age who MUST be declared upon making a reservation. Under certain circumstances, we would allow a third child. You must contact us first, however. No surprises, please and do understand we have a staircase.

Guest access
Our covered deck is just a leap from the creek. With comfortable deck furniture, it’s a delightful place to eat a meal, relax with a book, enjoy interesting conversation or step right into the hot tub, soak and star gaze the Montana BIG SKY.
What’s not to love about enjoying something off the grill and on the creek right on our back deck? We have a Weber grill available for your use. Trust me on this, our deck by the creek is a delightful spot for an evening meal with amazing ambiance. You are welcome to fix your own food in our rustic, handcrafted kitchen (custom cabinetry, hand forged hardware and concrete counters made to look like they were carved out of Trapper Peak. Enjoy the view of the mountains out a large kitchen window. In our photos, you will see one of a lovely doe and two fawns in our yard. I took that photo from my kitchen window.
Winter lodging: Speaking of ambiance, our"state of the art" Napoleon wood stove defines our comfort zone! Cozy up to it and watch those beautiful flames dance through the glass while sipping coffee in the morning or hot chocolate after an amazing day on the slopes! You will hear it crackling in the morning as you awaken to the smell of fresh coffee brewing below as your hosts will do that for you. Did I mention we spoil our guests in the morning? We will send you off to ski while we do the breakfast dishes as well as other spoilers not even mentioned here!
Winters are a fabulous time to enjoy the over-sized hot tub next to the creek which you will hear flowing under the ice. Sit under the big sky, count the stars and let it work the kinks out of your body.

Other things to note
DO make yourself at home, put your feet up on the coffee table and DO tell us how we can make things better. That’s a rule! Hang out with us for a stimulating chat or keep to yourself we are fine either way.
Please do understand that cell and internet services are not optimum in the mountains and maintaining adequate and consistent service is challenging and often frustrating. There IS, however, unlimited service during LATE night to early morning. We have no control over internet service interruptions. I wish we did! Please do NOT download movies, videos, games and other high data usage items as we do not have unlimited data allowance during regular hours.

IMPORTANT!!!: Our property borders the Bitterroot National Forest. It sustained a forest fire in 2000 in our canyon and you will see evidence of it as well as the re-growth process. We are NOT in tall pines but our mountain views are delightful! This gives a unique advantage to the wildlife observer. It is possible to see herds of elk on the hills just adjacent to our retreat; whitetail and mule deer hang around frequently. Watching a doe nurse her fawn from our back deck or a pair of fawn twins frolicking on the hills or even in our yard is not an unusual occurrence. Lounge in the living room with a pair of binoculars and you might get in some good wildlife sightings. Bird watching is at it's best in an after fire regrowth period. We are within a mile of dense forest.

We are located on a quiet and very secluded, one and a half lane National Forest road just one half mile off Hwy 93. For the passionate angler, our location couldn’t be better. You could walk to the East Fork at the Rocky Knob Holes for some serious fly fishing. We are five miles from the confluence of the East and West Forks of the Bitterroot and at the hub of world-class fly fishing. Skiers need to look no further for a cozy, wintertime accommodation. We are seventeen miles from Lost Trail Powder Mountain and just a few more to Chief Joseph Cross-country ski trail system. Enjoy an amazing day on the slopes and then soak in our hot tub under the stars. Our home has three sources of heat to keep you cozy but our wood burning stove supplies the ambiance only wood heat can give. You will be cozy enough to keep your window open at night and hear the creek gurgle under the ice.

I am retired from public service work. I love my home and creating a warm and welcoming environment. This includes baking and sharing homemade bread and pastries and serving up creative breakfasts. I am a sports enthusiast. I enjoy cross-country skiing and ATVing. Phil, my husband, is also retired from public service work, he is a world traveler. He enjoys fly fishing, gardening, grilling and caring for his small herd of goats which, by the way, are most entertaining. A former two-sport college athlete, he loves to talk sports. Together we enjoy exploring the woodlands on our ATVs. We are both quite busy these days trying to establish some added landscaping, a bridge across the creek and a new barn. We love people and making new friends. Our faith is central to who we are and we hope it shows through in how we extend a welcome to guests.

Our retreat is also a small farm, you can enjoy watching our herd of goats frolic in the yard, field, and hills. You might want to cuddle a kid or try your hand at milking or enjoying fresh eggs for breakfast from our hens.
