If you are looking for that Hawaiian style getaway right here in Central California, then look no further. We live on a large property overlooking the Pacific Ocean and redwood forests that features a botanical garden with exotic tropical fruit and over 100 species of rare tropical palms. A waterfall nested in the midst of a lush palm and fern forest will make you feel like you are somewhere on the islands. We have fresh home grown cherimoyas, highland papayas, sapotes, macadamias, rare citrus and much more.
Our home is a Mediterranean Spanish-roof style estate that also features a very spacious one bedroom apt/studio that can accomodate 2 people and possibly a child on the pullout sofa bed. You will have a bathroom with shower, a full kitchen with all amenities, and washer and dryer. The bamboo hardwood floors are newly laid. There is a separate bedroom and a separate dining room, but the floor plan is open, so there are only minor walls to separate the spaces, hence it could also be called a studio.
We are walking distance from Henry Cowells State Park, Pasatiempo Golf course, and a 10 minute drive from Central California's warmest and sunniest beaches. You can shop in downtown Santa Cruz and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the Warf all within minutes driving from here. You can also drive up the coast for 20 minutes and find secluded pristine beaches and beautiful cliffs. We know all the secret spots and will let you know how to get there.
We are open to share our garden with our guests. Hundreds come and visit annually just to see the amazing biodiversity of plants in our little botanical garden. Our palmetum features exotic palms from Madagascar, Central America, the Andes of South America, Brazil and Asia, including Andean coconuts, bismarckia nobilis and the Brazilian Jelly palm. We also have a large collection of dypsis and sabal palms. The orchard features an assortment of tropical and exotic fruit, with 50 rare citrus as well as 800 varieties of apples. We have fruit available year round.
We are looking to share our little piece of paradise with open minded guests who also share our belief that the world is a better place through more kindness and tolerance. World travelers are most welcome. We are fluent in French and German as well.
Please note: the property is on a steep hillside and has a lot of stairs. If you are not fit to handle stairs, then we are unable to accomodate you.
Note: Unfortunately, AirB&B violates all local US city and county ordinances by not supporting the ability to collect local hotel taxes. Therefore we are left on our own to collect the 13% hotel tax, which is due at arrival which needs to be paid in cash or check.
11% Santa Cruz County Tax is due upon arrival.
Our place is a good place for a couple or a small family looking for a nice little nature retreat. Please no partying, and no abuse of drugs and alcohol.
Noises coming from little kids will fit in nicely. But loud music or television noise isn't cool at all. You are responsible for anything you break.
Please check in before 10PM. If you absolutely must arrive later due to late flights or other travel restrictions, please contact us first to let us know so we can get you setup for self service check in.
We do not allow any pets. We do have a dog on the property. We make a rare exception to the no pet rule under very special circumstances, but only for small service dogs considered as close as possible to "hypo-allergenic", i.e. don't shed and don't smell. (We make exceptions for people who have a real disability, in which case the dog type doesn't matter. However, we do not make exceptions for such service dogs if they do not accompany someone with a real disability.) The dog must be crated at night and cannot spend the night on the furniture or in the sleeping area.
Cloudforest getaway was the perfect oasis for myself, wife and toddler daughter.
The place was very quiet, cozy & spotless and had everything you could need (WiFi,Netflix, washer & dryer) to make your stay enjoyable.
Its nestled in the hills over Santa Cruz on Axel's lush - dare I say tropical estate - and really feels like an escape from the (website hidden) only regret is not getting to see some of the gardens and groves on the property as commented on by others.
Would definitely recommend this getaway.
This is a wonderful place to stay! Axel is a great communicator - he replies quickly and clearly and he was very nice to chat with as we were checking in. The apartment is as clean as in the pictures. It was comfortable and it feels private and safe. The place is close to everything we wanted to get to in Santa Cruz. I highly recommend staying there.
Axel and his family were great hosts, always willing to provide suggestions and answer questions. The studio apartment was a nice oasis from any noise or distractions, but still providing wifi access, etc. The kitchen was great for making breakfast and dinner, and the washer and dryer were much appreciated.
Private location, comfortable accommodations, near Santa Cruz and many options.
The studio at Cloudforest was very clean, beautiful, modern and near to Santa Cruz's main attractions. After a long road trip to California, Cloudforest was a soft place for us to land: the bed was comfortable and the unit had everything we needed. As others have mentioned, it is in a gated community, but we thought it ideal because it was extremely quiet and we felt safe in the neighborhood. Axel and Michelle were welcoming: They showed us where everything was in the unit, gave us suggestions on where to eat, shop, hike and beach off the beaten path. One of our favorite things to do was to hike at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park which is literally a short jaunt away (it was maybe about a 10 minute walk in the hilly neighborhood to get there). We did our shopping at Trader Joes and visited some pretty, less crowded beaches within driving distance to Cloudforest. California is in a severe drought, so we were instructed to keep showers short; the family's approach to sustainable living (gray water tanks, solar panels, etc.) is impressive and I filed some ideas to integrate within our own home. The house is equipped with cleaning/laundering products, which we appreciated. Overall, Cloudforest was good for the soul. Thanks Axel and Michelle, for a fantastic stay!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and felt sad to leave.
The best aspects of "Cloudforest Getaway":
- Botanical garden. The tall, dense foliage, like a manicured tropical rainforest, keeps the atmosphere cool, fresh, and shaded during the hot summer. The guest house is built into the side of an aggressively steep hill, and walking up and down the curved staircase through the palm trees (to get to the upper carport) was a bit reminiscent of the Swiss Family Robinson home! (Maybe not exactly treehouse-like, but it definitely has a home-in-the-green-trees feel.)
- Peace and quiet. Most of the ambient noise comprises crickets at night, foghorns in the early morning, and the occasional sing-song coyote yip.
- Tranquil oasis. The property bears little resemblance to the golf course gated community around it. In fact, it is ringed by subtle placements of Tibetan Buddhist prayer flag buntings, which symbolize the tranquility of the garden and the larger region.
- Efficient design. The interior of the unit, while small, is efficient, modern, and architecturally interesting. Storage space is ample, the furnishings are comfortable, and extra linens are available on the shelves in the clothing closet. There are also plenty of electrical outlets and light switches.
- In-unit laundry. Having easy access to a well-functioning washer and dryer is like a miracle while on vacation. Imagine no big bag of laundry to schlep home!
- Full-size refrigerator. It was a relief not to have to cram all our food, water, and drinks into a tiny dorm-size refrigerator, which other rental units sometimes have.
- Ecologically conscious. Axel stocks the unit with nontoxic products and cleaners, and the house rules include guidelines for conscientious use of electricity and water.
This rental is best for a self-reliant single guest or a couple who are comfortable sharing close quarters. During the day, you can see beautiful Santa Cruz County, Monterey, Salinas, and the Spanish Missions -- and then come back for an evening of green serenity.
By far my all time favorite thing to do is to be a dad to my 16 month old son. If only we could all have the awe and excitement he has for discovering the amazing universe we live in. Somehow as adults we just forget. My son is also lucky to have the most amazing mom in the world, my wife Michelle who will go to the ends of the earth for him.
I really love to be outdoors and whenever I can I am out there gardening and tending to our little botanical paradise. I love the tropics and love to travel to far away places like Southeast Asia, the islands, Thailand, well, any place tropical.
I aspire to be open minded and I like to hang out with others that share that aspiration. As a host, I'd like to get to know my guests and do my best to be a good host that will make their stay better and more fun. I am always curious to meet world travelers from other countries.
