If you are looking for that Hawaiian style getaway right here in Central California, then look no further. We live on a large property overlooking the Pacific Ocean and redwood forests that features a botanical garden with exotic tropical fruit and over 100 species of rare tropical palms. A waterfall nested in the midst of a lush palm and fern forest will make you feel like you are somewhere on the islands. We have fresh home grown cherimoyas, highland papayas, sapotes, macadamias, rare citrus and much more.

Our home is a Mediterranean Spanish-roof style estate that also features a very spacious one bedroom apt/studio that can accomodate 2 people and possibly a child on the pullout sofa bed. You will have a bathroom with shower, a full kitchen with all amenities, and washer and dryer. The bamboo hardwood floors are newly laid. There is a separate bedroom and a separate dining room, but the floor plan is open, so there are only minor walls to separate the spaces, hence it could also be called a studio.

We are walking distance from Henry Cowells State Park, Pasatiempo Golf course, and a 10 minute drive from Central California's warmest and sunniest beaches. You can shop in downtown Santa Cruz and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the Warf all within minutes driving from here. You can also drive up the coast for 20 minutes and find secluded pristine beaches and beautiful cliffs. We know all the secret spots and will let you know how to get there.

We are open to share our garden with our guests. Hundreds come and visit annually just to see the amazing biodiversity of plants in our little botanical garden. Our palmetum features exotic palms from Madagascar, Central America, the Andes of South America, Brazil and Asia, including Andean coconuts, bismarckia nobilis and the Brazilian Jelly palm. We also have a large collection of dypsis and sabal palms. The orchard features an assortment of tropical and exotic fruit, with 50 rare citrus as well as 800 varieties of apples. We have fruit available year round.

We are looking to share our little piece of paradise with open minded guests who also share our belief that the world is a better place through more kindness and tolerance. World travelers are most welcome. We are fluent in French and German as well.

Please note: the property is on a steep hillside and has a lot of stairs. If you are not fit to handle stairs, then we are unable to accomodate you.

Note: Unfortunately, AirB&B violates all local US city and county ordinances by not supporting the ability to collect local hotel taxes. Therefore we are left on our own to collect the 13% hotel tax, which is due at arrival which needs to be paid in cash or check.

Your host, Axel

  • Excellent accommodations in a very peaceful setting.

  • I didn't stay at the Cloudforest getaway but booked it in order to send one of my guests there because at the last minute I was unable to host them. Axel was easy to work with on my side and responded promptly. The family in question had a 3yo son and Axel was able to accommodate them. I asked my guest, who did eventually check in with me, how is stay at the Cloudforest getaway had been? He said, "it had been lovely and close to the wedding" for which they were here to (website hidden) sounds like it would be a great place for a Santa Cruz retreat.

  • The listing was as we expected, and the neighborhood was a lovely and quiet residential area built around a golf course. The drive to the center of Santa Cruz was about 6 or 7 minutes (with no traffic). The unit was spotless, very comfortable, and very quiet. Remember to bring your own tea and coffee. Axel was a helpful and available host.

  • We were very surprised to find that this vacation rental was located in a gated community. Our GPS ((website hidden) Maps) guided us in the wrong direction, directing us to go left instead of right when you enter. It's not much of an issue because the main road circles back to the entrance, but if you come across this error, make sure you stay to the right. Otherwise you will be winding through the long way to get to your destination.

As past reviewers have said, the rental is in a beautiful place. There are many exotic, lush plants surrounding the property. Axel was very accommodating and gave us a few ideas for places to check out while in SC. We were impressed with the sustainable living on Axel's property. Electricity comes from solar panels, the water used to shower with is often used to water the exotic plants. We were encouraged to keep showers under 5 minutes, which was not a problem for us as we understand that California is in a drought.

We enjoyed our time here and we will definitely be back next time!

  • Had a pleasant stay at Cloudforest last week. The studio was nicely furnished, well stocked and spotless. Axel, through gruff in the beginning turned out to be a decent host in the end. My visit started off bumpy with a confusing self check-in that was not made clear in his outline of house rules. He was apologetic later when he realized that this detail was in fact left out of the instructions. I didn't get to explore the grounds beyond my doorstep but the surrounding foliage was very lush and tropical just like the pictures. All windows and doors look out to something green but there's no actual view. I don't think I heard or saw more than 4 running cars my entire 3 day stay which, coming from the city, was a welcome change. This probably had something to with being in a posh gated community which had it's moments good and bad. The good part was that it was perfectly manicured and beautiful, the bad was that Axel's cranky neighbor didn't approve of our cars being parked on the street. A rude note was left on the windshield scorning us for being on "private property" even though the main street belonged to the entire community. Once we kept our cars parked within 100 yards of Axel's house things were fine. I try to live as green as I can so Axel's rules on energy and water conservation were very much honored and respected. More people should think and live this way. I would recommend this place to anyone who's looking for seclusion and wants to have a taste of what it's like to live in a gated community.

  • We stayed at Axel's for 2 nights, his place is
Close from Santa Cruz but read carefully his driving instructions to get there. The apartment has everything you need and is very comfy. The place is very neat and clean and perfect for a
    Couple.

  • My bf and I stayed at Axel's place while we toured Santa Cruz and played the DeLaveaga disc golf course. The place was very clean and the property was gorgeous. Definitely easy to forget you're only 15 mins from the city. Axel and Michelle informed us of the extreme drought in the area and how he's working on a grey water project to help out. We apparently set off an alarm on the water meter while we both took quick showers, so might want to be careful about water usage here.

  • This is an excellent place to stay if you are traveling to Santa Cruz. It is minutes from town with easy access to Highway 17 or 1. We slept four people, two adults on the queen bed, one 6-year-old on a couple of foam cushions right next to the bed on the same platform, and one 11-year old on the futon. Did some computer work at night on the dining table without waking anyone up. We were visiting the Waldorf School and will be staying here again.

  • The Cloudforest Getaway was a great place to stay while visiting Santa Cruz. It was extremely clean, quiet, spacious, and a short drive to downtown. The property is beautiful and it almost felt like we were visiting Hawaii or some other tropical vacation spot. I would definitely stay there again—it would be a pleasure to return!

About
By far my all time favorite thing to do is to be a dad to my 16 month old son. If only we could all have the awe and excitement he has for discovering the amazing universe we live in. Somehow as adults we just forget. My son is also lucky to have the most amazing mom in the world, my wife Michelle who will go to the ends of the earth for him. I really love to be outdoors and whenever I can I am out there gardening and tending to our little botanical paradise. I love the tropics and love to travel to far away places like Southeast Asia, the islands, Thailand, well, any place tropical. I aspire to be open minded and I like to hang out with others that share that aspiration. As a host, I'd like to get to know my guests and do my best to be a good host that will make their stay better and more fun. I am always curious to meet world travelers from other countries.
