The Space

Our home and adjoining apartment are bordered along one side by the banks of Fort Pond Brook, and along two of the the others by woodlands, making it an especially restful location to unwind from your sightseeing or business in the Boston area. Our property is dedicated to our interest in all things horticultural, including unusual trees and shrubs, as well as creating ideal habitat for our bird friends. Acton is a five minute jaunt from historic Concord, Massachusetts, and is a mere 35 minute commute from Boston.

Acton is located off of Route 2, the fastest and least congested way into and out of Boston; it is also a scenic avenue for all forays into western Massachusetts, and all points north into New Hampshire and Vermont. The guest apartment has separate, off-street parking. However, a car is optional for the more intrepid or athletic traveler as the South Acton / Fitchburg line commuter rail stop is a mile away, and it will connect you to any points (including Logan airport) serviced by the inexpensive and extensive Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority.

The apartment consists of a private bathroom (shower only), bedroom with platform queen bed with new memory foam mattress, and window air conditioning unit (during the summer months). All bed linen, blankets and towels are provided. The living room looks out over the brook, and guests find the sound of the running water quite soothing. The kitchenette area is comprised of sink, dining table, half size refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, toaster oven. A traditional grocery store (pharmacy, etc) is a little over a mile away but there is a wonderful farm stand with seasonal produce just a five minute walk down the road.

We provide complimentary coffee, tea and bottled water. We personally do not provide breakfast; however, with your key you’ll find a Dunkin Donut (DD) gift card that you can use at nearby DD breakfast shops. We have found the ubiquitousness of DD in the Boston area gives our guests a flexibility and choice of breakfast comestibles we could not match.

We have two flame point Siamese cats, Bonny and Beau and were adopted by an inquisitive Ocicat we named Pakhet. However, in consideration to those with allergies, they are not allowed in the apartment. We also have recently added three Buff Orpington hens to the household-Lucille, Ginger and Reba. The coop and chicken tractor is in the backyard, and they would love for you to stop by and say hello.

Check In
  • I am afraid that I arrived after dark and left early the next morning, so I had little time to evaluate the area. It seemed peaceful and secluded. All the amenities were there, and the place was clean.

  • John communicated with me well in advance of my trip and I found the place to be exactly as he mentioned. I was only in for the night but the recommendations for places nearby to eat was very handy and spot on. Additionally, because there was impromptu digging and sewer repair on the street outside, John let me know immediately that it was unexpected and proposed compensating me a night's stay as a result. Truly a gracious host and well prepared place to stay!

  • The lavender barn and surrounding area was a wonderful place for my partner and I to get away for the weekend. Perfect place to drive or walkabout the woodsy neighbourhoods and only a short hop from Boston. We had hoped to see the kitties lounging about the garden but perhaps next time! Though we didn't get a chance to meet, John & Laura were gracious and attentive hosts through our emails back and forth. Thanks again!

  • John and Laura's place simply exceeded expectations. It was spotlessly clean which provided us with a real feeling of the comforts of home. They provided coffee and other basics (sugar) as well as bottled water. The bed linens were sublime, the towels were fluffy and the bed was comfy. The sitting room area is huge and gave us a nice place to rest daily after visiting the sites. (Must confess, we enjoyed the satellite TV :-) Lastly, the written info provided helped greatly to orient us to grocery stores and restaurants and was invaluable.

  • This place was perfect for my extended stay in the area. The kitchen area was alll in order, the sofa and bed were comfy and the wifi worked perfectly. Laura and John are lovely and were there to help when I needed it and were not intrusive at all. I will return!

  • John is an accommodating host who provided us with a clean, cozy place. The sound of the brook, as other reviewers note, really is a delight. The thermostat works just fine, plenty of clean towels were provided, and the sofa and loveseat are very comfy. There's even cable TV. Plenty of room on the desk to get work done by the window too.

  • This place was lovelly and looked exactly like it is in the photos. Our host was very nice and although the weather was chillier than we hoped for, we did enjoy the babbling brook right beneath our window.

  • This is a charming and private place, and John and Laura are considerate and discreet hosts. The sounds of the little brook right outside are a great bonus!

  • John and Laura were great hosts as I spent a few weeks looking for a more permanent place to live in the area. Communication was clear and John was very interested in being accommodating and finding ways to improve my stay. The area is beautiful and the there is a small brook on the property where it was nice to see ducks playing. It was perfect for my needs.

  • very nice stay in Acton. It was very nice to be woken up the first morning to the sound of ducks quacking. I rented the appartment on the coldest week of January (so far), 2014 and I must say I was never cold in the unit. The heat was great and I walked around in wool socks but the rest of me was quite comfortable. The bed is cozy and warm. A nice queen size on a platform. plenty of seating is available in the living room and the desk was very large and welcoming for my laptop and spread papers. The Duncan Donut gift card was a nice plus and its ubiquitous nature makes DD a logic breakfast alternative.

Denis thanks for the feedback as well as the suggestions you made privately. I would have never have thought of that! We're especially appreciative whenever our guest suggests ways to improve our listing and the amenities we offer. Hope to have you back some time.

After careers as a jeweler, landscape designer, and most recently as a nursing home administrator, I divide my free time between my passions of gardening and dance. Over the last 12 years, I have performed, choreographed, and twirled my heels for fun in dance styles ranging from 17th to the 20th century. Swing, Country Western Line, and Vintage dancing (historical recreation of styles from the English Regency, Civil War, Victorian and Ragtime Era) are my current favorites. I have one remaining vice, and it is called coffee. Mmmmmmm! Laura my partner has worked as computer programmer throughout the US and abroad for nearly 30 years. As a Geek / Nerd, she is fond of all things technical, electrical, shiny, Elven, Whovian and Pratchett. However, she shares a passion for making things grow, as well as dance. She is an avid reader; amateur thespian as well as loves to cook, and is a slave to all things cat. Favorite Quote of 2013: I like spring, but it is too young. I like summer, but it is too proud. So I like best of all autumn, because its leaves are a little yellow, its tone mellower, its colours richer, and it is tinged a little with sorrow and a premonition of death. Its golden richness speaks not of the innocence of spring, nor of the power of summer, but of the mellowness and kindly wisdom of approaching age. It knows the limitations of life and is content. From a knowledge of those limitations and its richness of experience emerges a symphony of colours, richer than all, its green speaking of life and strength, its orange speaking of golden content and its purple of resignation and death Lin Yutang
