Where you’ll be

Schifanoia, Umbria, Italy

Schifanoia is a "frazione" (hamlet) in the Province of Terni in the Italian region Narni.

The village is located about 8 km from the capital, on a medium hill at a height of 261 m above sea level.
In the surrounding area it is still possible to find traces of an ancient past: fossil molluscs emerge from yellow sands, residues of an ancient Pliocene lake, as well as the tooth (placoid scale) of an ancient fish, probably used in prehistoric times as a weapon.
In Roman times there are tombstones, coins, inscriptions and terracotta vases, as well as the foundations of some houses.
Schifanoia is a small village in the municipality of Narni in the province of Terni in the south of Umbria.
The Schifanoia district, inhabited today by about 500 families, extends over a territory that includes various villages and hilly localities centrally located between the Municipalities of Narni (6Km), Otricoli (8Km) and Calvi dell 'Umbria (10Km).
The center is not mentioned in the known ancient documents: the origin of the name, among the various hypotheses, could be Lombard and would indicate the function of guard of the pastures (scum is the lookout, nauda or noja is the pasture). The castle of Schifanoia, always under Narni, opened as an advanced sentry on the gorge between Poggio and Otricoli and was dominated by a massive 13th century tower, which collapsed in 1925. The castle still has the perimeter walls and remains of a smaller tower near the central square.
The current town was built in recent times; the ancient village was destroyed on June 8, 1491 by Giampaolo Baglioni, Camillo Vitelli and Paolo Orsini who faced the Perugian escapees of Bernardino Ranieri.
