About this listing
Dar El Ma is a lovingly restored traditional Moroccan house conveniently located in a quiet alley between the hubbub of the two main streets of the medina.
We have been awarded 2013, 2014 and 2015 Certificates of Excellence by Tripadvisor putting us in the top 10% most popular accommodations in the world for the last 3 years running!
We have two lovely large double rooms in the three storey house, so there's plenty of space to relax and you can book both rooms if you'd like to have the whole house to yourselves.
The M'raya (mirror in arabic) room is so named due to the giant mirror and has a comfortable double bed and also another single bed on a mezzanine reached by a wooden ladder.
The room looks out over an inner courtyard and the house itself is full of light, peaceful sounds, local colours and ornate detail.
We also have two roof terraces, where you can lounge around and admire the view across the ancient medina, have a barbeque or even take an outdoor shower (modestly screened by palms)!
We may be there but even if we're not, Imane will look after you and make breakfast from fresh bread and local produce.
There's a hammam style shower/bathroom, a fully equipped large kitchen and a kitchenette, a roomy salon, a 'snug' (cosy Berber-cushioned downstairs mezzanine), two toilets, washing machine and wifi. There are books, maps, boardgames, table football, comfy nooks and plenty of crannies, not to mention a lovely atmosphere so it's very much a case of make yourself at home...
Dar el Ma is opposite a hammam (traditional bath house) which is wonderful to experience - you'll feel wonderfully scrubbed and renewed - and next to the baker, so you'll smell the fresh bread twice a day.
Enjoy Fes - it's a mad and magical place!

Claire and Joe's riad is lovely and a great place to experience Fes. It's a beautiful building, with a wonderful rooftop terrace to catch some of the nighttime breeze or savor breakfast. Dar El Ma is in a great location, close to the fantastic Bab Boujloud in Fes's medina. Walk up the street a short distance and there are many market stalls to visit and sights to explore.
Most of all, we really enjoyed being hosted by Imane. She is very friendly and kind, and a fantastic cook to boot. Breakfast was always delicious and included local fruits and fresh bread from the neighboring bakery.
This home was so special. It really is so beautiful with its small doorways and many levels. We were free to come and go and explore as we pleased. We also had the most amazing breakfasts served to us each morning. I highly recommend staying in this beautiful space.
The building is beautifully restored and very clean. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked very well. I thought the host communicated very clearly and promptly. Imane, the housekeeper, made us delicious breakfasts, answered our questions and met us to help us find the place. She was very friendly. The location is very good. Washer works well. We would gladly stay here again and would recommend it to anyone.
We loved our stay in this beautiful riad. Our communication with Claire and Joe was great because of the quick response we always got, and their helpful and caring attitude when we were unexpectedly delayed. The housekeepers Houda and Imane were lovely, and the breakfasts were the best we've ever had. The house itself is beautiful and has lots of great spaces to relax or curl up with a book, and the view from the rooftop terrace is fantastic. the position in the heart of the medina is perfect. It was very easy to find our way around after the first day, and we found the neighbourhood safe and friendly. Would totally recommend!
Claire and Joe's place is awesome! Communicating with them was nice and easy. The place was clean and tidy. Had a wonderful time with their house keeper Houda and Imane. Felt just like home.
We had the most beautiful experience in Fes, largely due to our stay at Dar El Ma. The property is perfectly located in the very center of the Fes Medina, just off the main street of the souks. It exudes the heart and soul of Fes, and has a wonderful feeling to it through out - from hearing the Imam chants on the rooftop, to the doors and irregular stairways to the high ceilings - it all feels like it must have felt in this space for centuries.
But that is just part of the pure joy of staying here - the other part is Houda. I cannot express enough how much we appreciated shopping the souks with her for dinner, cooking dinner together with her, discussing our life experiences, our hopes, our dreams. Wow, what an incredible soul she is and we hope our lives cross again in this world.
You can stay in a Riad, but I would HIGHLY recommend staying here. Houda (the guest house's host) was SO, SO, SO helpful and willing to meet our every need. Claire and Joe were great in communicating even though they don't live in the Morocco house. It was wonderful seeing the photo album of all the restoration they did on the house. It's a great location in the old city. Make sure you get lost in it all. It was such a great holiday for my friend and I - from rain shower style bathrooms to very high ceilings and explorable nooks and crannies, we felt at home from the very beginning. I'd recommend a tour with their guide and a cooking lesson with Houda. She give the house so much care, attention and character. We spent one night watching the stars, eating the dinner and diving into deep topics of conversation. We were able to see so much on such a short visit because of their help and it was all because we stayed at this M'raya room. It was so spacious - which can be rare to find. I don't think I would have had a better experience at a different accommodation. If (and hopefully when) I go back to Fes, I really hope to stay there again.

About the Host, Claire And Joe
We live on a houseboat in London with our chickens and cats when we're not escaping to the madness of magical Fes. We loved restoring Dar el Ma - delays and donkeys and all - and enjoyed making friends and having adventures in the medina. It's brilliant now to be able to welcome others into the house so they fall in love with the quirks of the medina too!
We're both freelancers, love travelling and have enjoyed using Airbnb ourselves.
Houda, (fourth photo) who works in Dar el Ma when we're not there, is from Fes and speaks Arabic, English and French. She's a fabulous cook, a great henna'ist and a wonderful friend :)
