About this listing

The space

Dar El Ma is a lovingly restored traditional Moroccan house conveniently located in a quiet alley between the hubbub of the two main streets of the medina.

We have been awarded 2013, 2014 and 2015 Certificates of Excellence by Tripadvisor putting us in the top 10% most popular accommodations in the world for the last 3 years running!

We have two lovely double rooms in the three storey house, so there's plenty of space to relax and you can book both rooms if you'd like to have the whole house to yourselves.

Ferhana means happy in Darija (it was one of the first words we learnt)! and the room has a comfortable double bed and also a small single bed in a quirky mezzanine up a wooden ladder; perfect for an older child.

The room looks out over an inner courtyard and the house itself is full of light, peaceful sounds, local colours and ornate detail.
We also have two roof terraces, where you can lounge around and admire the view across the ancient medina, have a barbeque or even take an outdoor shower (modestly screened by palms)!

We may be there but even if we're not, Imane will look after you and make breakfast from fresh bread and local produce.

There's a hammam style shower/bathroom, a fully equipped large kitchen and a kitchenette, a roomy salon, a 'snug' (cosy Berber-cushioned downstairs mezzanine), two toilets, washing machine and wifi. There are books, maps, boardgames, table football, comfy nooks and plenty of crannies, not to mention a lovely atmosphere so it's very much a case of make yourself at home...

Dar el Ma is opposite a hammam (traditional bath house) which is wonderful to experience - you'll feel wonderfully scrubbed and renewed - and next to the baker, so you'll smell the fresh bread twice a day.

Enjoy Fes - it's a mad and magical place!

This is our other room:
Or you can book the entire house (2 rooms) if free !:

P.S. If you fancy learning how to shop for and make a few delicious Moroccan dishes, Imane is a brilliant cook and can teach up to 2 people at a time in the kitchen at Dar el Ma - let us know if you're interested.

Guest access

The entire house is yours so this means you can relax in the lounge, or play some table football. You can read a book in the snug or do some work in the office. The kitchen is all yours to cook in and there is also a hammam style bathroom and then a utility room for washing clothes.
On the roof is a kitchenette and two roof terraces, most likely with a cat or two on! You can cool off in the outdoor roof shower after a day of relaxing views over the medina.

Interaction with guests

We will not usually be present during your stay however Imane the house manager will be there from 8am to 4pm to help you with anything you need, as well as serve you a delicious breakfast in the morning.
We will however be on hand at any time via message, email and phone, mainly before your arrival to help plan how you arrive.
We supply a mobile phone in each room should you need to contact Imane in the evening so you can always be in touch.

Other things to note

Please don't try and turn up at the house by yourself - we will arrange for you to be met - as there may not be anyone at the house to let you in... Please read the HOST'S DIRECTIONS part of your Airbnb booking confirmation email for more information.

Despite having flexible check in times we can not allow check in before 8am on the day of your arrival. It's a shame that we didn't meet Claire and Joe. But their house manager Imane is a magically amazing lady who makes fabulous breakfast and speaks great English. I'll never forget the vegetable pancakes she made. The location is walkable, and the instructions are quite clear. Although hidden in the bustle of Fes, this place is much easier to find compared to a lot of riads. Truthfully, this riad has everything you need and you really can't ask for more. I highly recommend you stay here.

The riad is even better than described. We had a lovely room and the view from the roof terrace is just breathtaking. Imane is one of nicest persons we met on our trip! She was really helpful and caring. The communication with Claire and Joe was great! We had a wonderful time and will hopefully stay there again!

Imane, the lovely house manager, greeted us at the parking lot after we arrived from train station by taxi (about 10 Minutes away) before leading us to the dar located in the medina. Great location for exploring the medina! Breakfast was served on the terrace- it was very delicious! The rooftop has great views of the medina too! There are 2 rooms in the dar so it's semi-private since there will be 2-3 other people sharing the house. Wifi worked well too! Communication before arrival was smooth and I would stay here again if I was in Fes!

We can't recommend this place enough: it was in a great location in the medina, Imane was super friendly and helpful with all our questions and there is a lovely roof terrace where you eat breakfast in the mornings! Imane also arranged an official tour guide for us which was helpful. Also, the house itself is beautiful and you can look at a photo album of how it was lovingly restored. Would definitely stay here again if we came back to Fes :) such a lovely place to chill out as well as a great base for sightseeing!

This place is fantastic! Great location, very clean, and so beautiful. This Dar was the perfect home base for exploring the old city of Fez. It is away from the touristy areas and located in a more residential-feeling area. You can hear some outside noise but the city does not have a loud night life so it is no problem. The home was so fun to explore (and offered every needed amenity) with lots of nooks and crannies as well as several floors of stairs. the rooftop was very nice. I really enjoyed the shower room, which always had hot water. We had the place to ourselves all but one night but it was no problem sharing the bathroom/shower which are located in separate rooms. Imane is very kind and made us lovely breakfasts. We only stayed 3 nights and I hope we can return on our next visit to Fez.

Claire And Joe User ProfileClaire And Joe is a superhost.

We live on a houseboat in London with our chickens and cats when we're not escaping to the madness of magical Fes. We loved restoring Dar el Ma - delays and donkeys and all - and enjoyed making friends and having adventures in the medina. It's brilliant now to be able to welcome others into the house so they fall in love with the quirks of the medina too!

We're both freelancers, love travelling and have enjoyed using Airbnb ourselves.

Imane, (fourth photo) who works in Dar el Ma when we're not there, is from Fes and speaks Arabic, English and French. She's a fabulous cook and a wonderful friend :)
