Dar El Ma is a lovingly restored traditional Moroccan house conveniently located in a quiet alley between the hubbub of the two main streets of the medina.
We have just been awarded a 2013 Certificate of Excellence by Tripadvisor putting us in the top 10% most popular accommodations in the world!
We have two lovely double rooms in the three storey house, so there's plenty of space to relax and you can book both rooms if you'd like to have the whole house to yourselves.
Ferhana means happy in Darija (it was one of the first words we learnt)! and the room has a comfortable double bed and also a small single bed in a quirky mezzanine up a wooden ladder; perfect for an older child.
The room looks out over an inner courtyard and the house itself is full of light, peaceful sounds, local colours and ornate detail.
We also have two roof terraces, where you can lounge around and admire the view across the ancient medina, have a barbeque or even take an outdoor shower (modestly screened by palms)!
We may be there but even if we're not, Houda will look after you and make breakfast from fresh bread and local produce.
There's a hammam style shower/bathroom, a fully equipped large kitchen and a kitchenette, a roomy salon, a 'snug' (cosy Berber-cushioned downstairs mezzanine), two toilets, washing machine and wifi. There are books, maps, boardgames, table football, comfy nooks and plenty of crannies, not to mention a lovely atmosphere so it's very much a case of make yourself at home...
Dar el Ma is opposite a hammam (traditional bath house) which is wonderful to experience - you'll feel wonderfully scrubbed and renewed - and next to the baker, so you'll smell the fresh bread twice a day.
Enjoy Fes - it's a mad and magical place!
IF YOU BOOK PLEASE READ THE 'HOST'S DIRECTIONS' PART OF YOUR AIRBNB RECEIPT EMAIL - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
This is our other room: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/647778
Or you can book the entire house (2 rooms) if free !: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/697112
P.S. If you fancy learning how to shop for and make a few delicious Moroccan dishes, Houda is a brilliant cook and can teach up to 2 people at a time in the kitchen at Dar el Ma - let us know if you're interested.
N.B. we have a temporary kitten called Aineen (her name means eyes in Arabic as she has beautiful different coloured eyes) living on our roof at the moment. We rescued her from the street where she was about to die. After love and a kind vet, she's much better. However, she's deaf and she wouldn't survive in the alleyways of Fes for long because of this (presumably how she got into such a pickle in the first place). We are in the process of getting her a passport and she'll be coming to the UK as soon as blood tests etc. have been arranged - in the meantime, we're sorry if this should cause any inconvenience - she may try and dash into the upstairs kitchen to sleep on the cooler floor or meow for attention. Let us know if you really can't bear the thought of her and we have a friend who can look after her for the duration of your stay.
The entire house is yours so this means you can relax in the lounge, or play some table football. You can read a book in the snug or do some work in the office. The kitchen is all yours to cook in and there is also a hammam style bathroom and then a utility room for washing clothes.
On the roof is a kitchenette and two roof terraces, most likely with a cat or two on! You can cool off in the outdoor roof shower after a day of relaxing views over the medina.
We will not usually be present during your stay however Houda the house manager will be there from 8am to 4pm to help you with anything you need, as well as serve you a delicious breakfast in the morning.
We will however be on hand at any time via message, email and phone, mainly before your arrival to help plan how you arrive.
We supply a mobile phone in each room should you need to contact Houda in the evening so you can always be in touch.
The House 'Dar el Ma' is situated in the heart of the medina between the two main pedestrian streets. This means you are close to everything in the old medina.
The medina is pedestrian so the best way to get around is on foot! Please read our Host's Directions section regarding the very important need to assist you with your arrival plans.
Please don't try and turn up at the house by yourself - we will arrange for you to be met - as there may not be anyone at the house to let you in... Please read the HOST'S DIRECTIONS part of your Airbnb booking confirmation email for more information.
Please note we have a rescue kitten living on the roof, whilst we are currently trying to find a home for her (she is deaf so the streets are a dangerous place for her) we please ask to make sure she does not enter the house!
This is a beautiful and unique riad, centrally located in the best part of Fez! Houda was an absolute doll and took great care of us. We left and couldn't stop talking about how we wish we lived in Fez so we could be friends with her. She fixed us an awesome breakfast and spent time explaining Moroccan culture and life in Fez. This is the perfect place for a family or group of friends to book because you can have the entire riad to yourself, and it's stocked with games and plenty of areas to lounge and relax.
The stay at the BnB was great. The service was great, the welcome was warm, the beds were comfy, the house beautiful, the location brilliant and the view from the roof terrace magnificent. Thank you so much for the best start we could've had to our trip!
The reservation was canceled 4 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
if you are going to stay in Fes this is the place to be.
you'll be welcomed from the moment you are picked up from the airport by the taxidriver and treated like kings or queens by houda, the majordomo during your stay.
even the cat living on the roof is there to caress or be caressed.
a delightfully quiet and well equipped traditional moroccan house right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the medina that seems to not have changed for centuries.
it's like living in the fairy tales of a 1001 nights for a while.
This was my first stop in Morocco and it is so perfectly located. It is right in the heart of the old souk. I was thankful when someone came to meet us when we arrived in the car park to show us where to go.
Houda is absolutely amazing! Her English is perfect and she was very helpful when we were wanting to arrange a rental car. The breakfast array was spectacular. You will not be disappointed.
The riad lives up to the photos and I think I spent the first hour just exploring everywhere. Beds were extremely comfortable.
The hosts were also very gracious towards us when our plans changed and we had to leave a night early.
I would highly recommend this riad as a perfect place to stay in Fez.
Claire and Joe bought this old riad in 2006 and with the help of some talented local workers, brought it back to life in an original Moroccan style--but with modern plumbing and electric wiring, kitchen, and sliding glass roof panels over the central courtyard skylight. The Ferhana room was spacious, with a high ceiling, lovely carved wooden shutters with stained glass looking out over the courtyard, and a nice sitting/sleeping loft accessible by a ladder (great for kids). The bed was comfortable and enough blankets were supplied for the cool November evenings. The best part is Houda, the housekeeper/arranger/translator, who prepared large traditional breakfasts, translated our English and mediocre French into Arabic when we asked, and was very helpful giving directions for getting around efficiently within the rabbit warren of "streets" of the Medina, which was our favorite in Morocco (the widest street is about 2m, and no cars are allowed). Check out Joe & Claire's photo book showing the process of deconstructing and rebuilding their riad--the patience and trust required to have pulled this off successfully is admirable. If you are lucky, you will be the only guests and have the house to yourself...
We strongly recommend the Medina Dar, on our short stay we had no problem getting to the medina and being warmly welcomed by our guests that took us directly to the Dar. It is well located, secure and offer a great sanctuary to rest after a buzzling day in the medina. All of the rooms are very neat, well maintained and each have their own charm.
Thank you for the stay and we will greatly suggest to stay at this location to our friends or family.
What a lovely house! We really enjoyed our stay in Fez, and this was a big part. Houda, the housekeeper was very nice and helpful, and we enjoyed chatting with her. Claire and Joe weren't there, but were helpful in communications and instructions.
There are lots of interesting nooks and lofts, and the terrace was a great place for breakfast. I had fun at the hammam around the corner, and Houda does henna tatoos for a fun souvenir.
The room was simply amazing and the overall decor of Dar El Mar is simply amazing with a blend of old and new furniture. We were lucky that when we stayed there, we were the only room and thus we had the whole place to ourselves and we loved exploring the place.
The location is convenient as it is in the middle of the medina and its easy to get to where you want to, be it for food or for shopping.
Its easy to communicate with Claire and Joe and Houda is also ready with information and in the morning, she would prepare for you an amazing breakfast.
I would highly recommend this place!
We spent few days at Dar El Ma and we had really great time. The room we occupied was comfortable and clean and the whole riad is cozy and tastefully decorated.
Houda is adorable and she took care of us like a really good friend, surprising every morning with yummy breakfast.
It was a pleasure to stay there and we will back in a really short time.
