We are a family with 3 kids aged 6, 9 and 11. We stayed at Sameh’s apartment in Giza for 4 nights when we first arrived in Cairo at the start of a 9 month trip. We took up Sameh’s offer to be picked up at the airport for USD25 to save any hassle at the airport or finding the apartment. It was a great decision. The taxi driver was waiting outside arrivals for us and Sameh’s brother Ashraf was waiting for us at the apartment.
The apartment is located one block from the exit gate of the pyramids with incredible views of the pyramids from the bedroom window and roof. Unfortunately, although you can access the roof, it is strewn with rubbish and there is nowhere to sit. But still the view was unbeatable. The area is very local where all the horses and camels are stabled so the smell of horse and camel was pungent although faded over time. Our kids loved having the horses and camels in such close proximity.
The apartment itself was quite dark (windows were small and closed so that the dust stays out), locally decorated and the cupboards and drawers (particularly in the kitchen) we strewn with rubbishy items which should really be cleaned out. The kitchen had fridge, microwave, random other appliances, a stove, a few plates, cups and cutlery. It would not be that easy to cook in the kitchen but there is plenty of local food in the area so we always ate out. We made good use the clothes washing machine and internet.
Overall the apartment could have been cleaner and tidier. It was a bit dusty but having now travelled further through Egypt, most places are dusty unless you are staying 5 star. The shower in the bathroom was a bit difficult for the kids to use unassisted but the bathroom was otherwise functional. The beds, sheets and towels were clean.
Apartment is spacious and suited our needs. We would recommend this apartment if you are up for some local colour and adventure but not if you are looking for western mod cons.
It was a great base to return to, safe and secure and the owner's brother Ashraf who lives downstairs was invaluable. He showed us around our local area and made sure we knew where we could get local food and drink and buy our necessities. He attended to all our requests promptly, helped us plan and organise transport and activities, gave great advice and suggestions but did not push anything. He was great with the kids and made us feel secure and welcome. He more than made up for the few deficiencies in the apartment. The owner Sameh was also very responsive to all communications. Overall a positive experience.
Dear Mr. Shane.
Thanks for your kind review, we are happy to have such a respectable person like you and your family was really very nice and friendly.
Thanks for the positive points about our apartment and I will reply about your comments about the apartment:
First, About the horses and camels around the area..as you know this is the touristic pyramids area near the desert and there they are making trips on the back of the horses and camels to Sahara City in the middle of the desert and also around the pyramids and Sphinx... So I think this very nice to have such a nice option beside you...
Second, About the roof, Sorry I am planning to make a garden over the roof with a very nice view of the 3 pyramids and the Sphinx, so my guests will enjoy having their breakfast or drinking their tea or coffee while enjoying this panoramic view of the Pyramids and the Sphinx.. Also I am presenting my great sorry to you about that promising the next time you visit us you will find a very wonderful garden over the roof... may be you will stay most of your time on the roof enjoying it.
Third, About dust in the drawers... I am always letting the servants to clean the flat every now and then.. but sorry these days you were in the flat was the season of dust in the air in Egypt,, and the servants couldn't come out to beat the push of the dust through windows and small openings anywhere... anyway sorry for this point and it will be sharply commented with the servants.
At the end, I would like to say you are so wonderful in your review and it was the greatest honor to have you and your family as guests in our apartment and in your second country Egypt.
Looking forward to see you many other times in Egypt..promising you will be more and more happy with us.
Best wishes and regards,
This place has an incredible location, minutes away from the Pyramids and with an unbeatable rooftop view. The location is also very helpful for telling cabs how to get to where you're staying, though watch out for getting overcharged as it’s a good half hour drive from downtown Cairo. Ashraf, Sameh’s brother who lives in the building, was very helpful in showing us around the neighborhood and offered to arrange tours for us (though we declined, and had a thoroughly enjoyable self-guided Pyramids experience after doing some research). We had an issue in the apartment that Ashraf attended to and got fixed very promptly, and he arranged cab rides to and from the airport for us.
Be aware that while the apartment is clean and on the third floor, the neighborhood is home to the stables for camels and horses taken around the pyramids; you will be around lots of livestock here. Do not expect to find alcohol nearby; do expect to be targeted as a tourist by people trying to sell you stuff.
Overall, we found it to be a great time to visit the Pyramids- temperatures were pleasant in late January and tourist traffic was light.
Thanks so so much for your kind and nice words, really you and your friends were so respectable and wonderful guests, so we hope you will visit us many other times.
I liked the way you wrote your review and we are happy to get your points.
I hope you will consider us as your second family and please keep in touch.
All of us are ready to help you in anything in Egypt.
Our great wishes and regards to all of you.
I chose this apartment because of its location, and was not at all disappointed. The view from the roof is incredible! The apartment was as advertised, and was comfortable, but we didn't really spend much time there, as we were out sightseeing so much. Sameh's brother, Ashraf, arranged for us to be picked up from the airport, and also planned activities for us so we could see as much as possible in the short amount of time that we had. Ashraf took very good care of us, and we felt safe at all times. We were so very fortunate that Moses, Sameh's father, was our tour guide both days. He was a professor at Cairo University and knows everything there is to know about the pyramids and antiquities. We learned so much! Moses is well-known and liked by everyone--we soon realized that we were in the company of a national treasure! Some advice--pack water and snacks to take along, because Moses gets so involved that he forgets (or doesn't need) to stop for drinks or food! Also, there is a little grocery store in front of this building, but they don't open very early, so buy groceries that you may need for breakfast the night before. I will share the contact information for this apartment with my friends, and highly recommend this family to anyone who wants to get the most out of a visit to Giza.
AMAZING pyramid view! I cannot emphasize this enough. Absolutely stunning. The stairwell to the flat goes all the way up to the roof where there are plenty of tables and chairs. Every morning we sat up there drinking our Nescafe and gazing in wonder at the pyramids and the great Sphinx. You are close enough that you can hear the sound and light show at night from the rooftop. There are two large comfortable bedrooms, a nice living room, clean bathroom and a kitchen with plates, cups, utensils, and pans. Sameh's brother (Ashraf) and father (Moses) live in other apartments in the building and were both incredibly helpful. Ashraf set up taxi rides to and from the airport, gave us a tour of the neighborhood and even let us borrow his laptop all week. Moses set up a tour for us of Dashour, Memphis and Sakkara just outside of Cairo. HIs other son Tareq was our guide and he was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Really everyone we met through staying in Sameh's flat was wonderful and eager to help us in anything we wanted. I believe staying there and getting to know his family made the trip a hundred times better than it would have been had we stayed in a hotel. I really came away from the whole experience feeling as though I had made friends on top of having the trip of a lifetime.
Everyone we came in contact with in the neighborhood were also very friendly. Lots of people try to sell you trinkets or make you ride camels near the pyramids which got annoying but it wasn't a big deal and also seemed pretty standard anywhere you went in Cairo.
Thanks so much for your kind and wonderful words, and It was a honor to have such a nice guest like you in my flat hoping it will not be the last time.
From now on, you have a second family in Egypt.
All my family sends a big HI to you and said you are one of the most wonderful guest who have ever visit our apartment and we hope to see you many other times,
Please keep in touch and feel free to ask anything to do in Egypt for you.
With our best wishes and regards,
Thanks again and good bye.
Due to the incompetence of Air Egypt we were forced to seek at short notice an additional nights accommodation and Sameh Shaer in true professional spirit came to the rescue.
As we are retired pensioners in our mid sixties we need to inform others in the same catergory of our experience.
Negatives: To our western noses the constant smell of Camel, horse and donkey dung outside the apartment is a reminder that we are not in the city. No towels, soap, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, shower curtain and a stuck bath plug were a big dissapointment as these are not luxuries, rather the norm in BnB's. Disposal of refuse into canals and harsh treatment of animals is a shock to western eyes.
Positives : Be assured that you are in good hands with this family. Father Moses is there to welcome and ensure your farewell. Brother Ashraf is the professional organiser and brother Tarek the professional tour guide. The apartment problems were attended to immediately and we settled in smoothly.Everything in the "Description" of the apartment is correct and we enjoyed the privacy, security and comfort of being alone. If one is looking for a rural experience near to Pyramids, Sphinx, Sakarrah & Memphis, then Giza/Pyramid apartment view is the place to be.
Thank you to Ashraf for 3 well organised tours, timeous travel/taxi arrangements and driving us around to money changers and supermarkets. Thank you to Tarek for his passionate, professional and knowlegable portrayal of Egyptian history on the tours and assisting in Cairo to source material.
This apartment rental was so much more than I had expected....in a great way. If you are looking for a cozy, spacious place that has great views of the pyramids, especially from the roof, it isn't going to get better than this! I chose this space over hotels because of its close proximity to the pyramids ( walking distance) and because it was more local and laid-back. Every day, you can sit from the balcony and watch the camel-drivers and horses gearing up for their day, maybe the camel-doctor- aiding a camel, or wander into a stable to talk to Arabian horses. To give away the secret of this apartment is my pleasure, because the hosts will make your stay very comfortable. Ashraf treated us like family , as well as Tariq, and we never had to overthink anything. I like to travel based on my own research of things i'd like to see, and Sameh's family easily helped me accomplish this and helped me arrange getting to the places I needed to go without a hitch. The apartment is clean, orderly, and convenient. High marks!!
Sameh's brother Ashraf was a great host - incredibly helpful in navigating Giza City, and assisting in arranging meetings and activities.
