About This Listing
The house is located in Marta, a charming town on Lake Bolsena. It is built on the remains of a '500 fortress and offers a superb view of the lake. Is near the tower.
The 100 sq.m are divided between a ground floor (with lounge/living room with fireplace, kitchenette, dining area, bathroom, small terrace with table and chairs overlooking the hills of Marta); a spiral staircase leads to the upper floor with one double bedroom with view of the lake, two single bedrooms with view of the hills, one toilet with shower.
All ceilings have wooden beams.
Strategically located in the area called Tuscia (in the Lazio region) which shares borders with Tuscany and Umbria, Marta is locaed only...km from medioeval town Viterbo; numerous other hitorical sites are at an ideal distance for one-day excursions.
Swimming in the lake is possible from spring to autumn and beaches such as Montefiascone, Gradole and Bolsena have quite a number of small restaurants and trattoria which offer excellent food and wine.
Boat excursions are organized from Montefiascone to the Bisentine Island, famous for its Farnese Palace which was built by XVI century architect Antonio da Sangallo.
For those who are fans of thermal tourism, the Terme dei Papi, some 20 min. drive from Viterbo, are a real treat. More spas are located in the province of Siena, some 40/45 min. drive from Marta (Bagno Vignoni, San Filippo Bagni, S. Casciano dei Bagni). The landscape in that region is superb.
Numerous other excursions can be organized depending on whether you are interest in art or Italian food specialties. In the Lazio region special mention deserve BAGNOREGIO, perched on a high tuff cliff;TUSCANIA, famous Etruscan town which boasts two beautiful Romanesque churches (S. Pietro and S Maria Maggiore); VULCI, another archaeological site located close to a famous Etruscun necropolis. Close by is a small lake immortalized in films by directors suh as Wim Wender and Zeffirell. You cannot miss ORVIETO, in the Umbria region, with its famous gothic cathedral.
Finally, if you decide to stretch out to the Tirreno Sea, do not miss the Tuscan Maremma, the natural Reserves of Lake Burano and Capalbio, all a real treat.
You will find additional information on the area as welll as a list of my preferred restaurants, selected for their good quality/price value.

Consigliatissimo!
Valentina has been a very nice host. The flat is well located with a very nice view of the lake. Leaving room and kitchen are the heart of the flat. Rooms are upstairs and easily accessible by staircase. Only negative point was that we were there during a very cold period and the house heavily exposed to wind and cold. In front of the flat there is a big clock. We personally did not hear it at night time.
Valentina was incredibly generous and hospitable. Although she was not personally able to be there when we arrived, she had made a trip there right before our arrival just to make sure everything was in good order, and went out of her way to assist us to make us feel comfortable. She found a place where we could purchase firewood for our stay (and allowed us to use the amazing fireplace!). When we arrived, we found baskets of fruit, bottles of water, foodstuffs, and everything arranged so nicely in the house for us.
The place itself is incredible. It may be a very antique house and feels like a privilege to be living in something that could probably be a museum, given it's location next to the tower, part of an old fortress, and overlooking the breathtaking lake. The views from the front door and bedroom windows are surreal... whether raining, sunny or foggy. The house is arranged so well and comfortably, and we could not have asked for a more perfect place to rest, feel restored and use as a jumping off point to explore Tuscany and Umbria. (Orvieto is a must see!)
The town of Marta is very quaint (you can wander down below the house into paved stone walkways between old stone houses all joined together, with little potted flowers, and come out below on a walkway along the lake. There is a great road for running around part of Lake Bolsena towards Montefiascone (8 miles, mostly flat and all along the water, if you run there and back), and the views along the way are fantastic. We often walked into town to get gelatos, groceries just down the street, or eat at local restaurants.
All in all, amazing place and incredibly thoughtful host!
Note: If you want to explore the Tuscan cities around, we would recommend a car, at least for part of your stay.
This place is a real charmer! Valentina welcomed us at very short notice which was very kind. We had quite an interesting chat. We felt at home straight away in her lovely flat and it has everything needed from a washing machine to very good beds. The best mattresses we have come accross in a B&B. Those 'small' details make a big difference in the long run.
The village is on the shore of a lake and has a very authentic feel where locals come to take a break. In the evenings we walked along the esplanade and the whole area is very pleasant. Notable places of interests we liked nearby are the Etruscans tombs, the amazing fortified village of Pitigliano and a host of interesting places. The flat is comfortable, spacious, feels fresh and open and it is definitively worth staying at least 3 days if not more in the area if you have the time.
