The Space

A small self-contained independent cottage –akin to the French gîte concept – set in a mature garden beside a quiet road amidst tranquil farmland, yet within ten minutes of a great cappuccino, the majestic coast including the ‘Wild Atlantic Way', megalithic sites (we have a cairn within walking distance), artisan restaurants and much, much more.

My wife and I have a home-based office – we offer publishing consultancy services – so you can have access to all the communications you require while on holiday. However, we recommend the best communication you can have while visiting is with ‘nature'.

We are quiet and unobtrusive, but have a wealth of local knowledge to make your stay memorable. Our interests are eclectic, so you let us know what it is you would like to discover and, in all likelihood, we can point you in the right direction.

We love good food ourselves and can offer pointers to stunning local produce if required. In the summer months you may have to share our acre of mature wooded garden with swallows and grandchildren. Sometimes simultaneously.

The accommodation consists of a double bedroom, bathroom and living space, including a small kitchen, on the ground floor plus a first floor with dormer windows suitable for sleeping two children (three at a pinch).

Despite the tranquillity, and apparent remoteness, we are only 6 km from the bustling market town of Skibbereen. The area is ideal for walking and cycling in addition to being a good base to explore the rugged peninsulas at our doorstep.

Unfortunately, this part of Ireland is no longer served by the railway network. The national bus service operates buses through Skibbereen with reasonable frequency. So a car, while not totally necessary, would facilitate seeing the breadth of sights in the locality. However, we can collect you from the town if required.

This is a unique corner of the world where the community still have time for their neighbours and for the odd stray tourist. It is more beautiful than the famed Ring of Kerry but with a fraction of the visitors and none of the tour buses.

Guest Access

Our guests have a self-contained light and airy cottage with oil-fired central heating, free wifi and ‘free-to-air' satellite TV. The more important ‘freedom' however, is access to the surrounding nature right at our doorstep.

Interaction with Guests

Our own dwelling house is opposite the cottage so are generally around and about, but in an unobtrusive manner. We are happiest when our guests feel free to organise themselves, but more than happy to help or advise on any aspect of your stay.

The Neighborhood

We live rurally, so there is not much to ‘do' here except ‘be' and luxuriate in the unparalleled peace and quiet. We have lovely neighbours, none of whose houses we can see, but we know they are there if needed.

Getting Around

There is bus service from Cork to Skibbereen (±5 times daily). We are always happy to bring or collect guests from the bus.

There is car rental at Cork airport and free spacious parking at the cottage.

House Rules

We do not enforce a strict monastic regimen, but the accommodation is probably better suited to those who seek peace, quiet and a modicum of contemplation rather than nightly raves. Because of our location we have to dispose of our own rubbish, so we love people who tread lightly on the earth. The cottage is ‘no smoking'. As we are surrounded by farmers we do not accept pets.

The living room of the cottage with picture window to the outside world. The strange apparition on the floor is called shadow, apparently it is caused by the sun. An extremely rare occurrence in Ireland, it cannot be guaranteed when you visit!
