We think our house is beautiful! It is a post-and-beam structure with thick, undulating strawbale walls. The top floor, which has views throughout of the vineyard, lake, and Okanagan Mountain Park, has an open concept with a big kitchen.
The bedrooms are downstairs, both with queen beds, as are the two main bathrooms. Other amenities: laundry, internet, fridge space, lawn, in-ground trampoline.
In order to keep our energy consumption down we don't have air conditioning, but the 16 inch walls keep the house comfortable and downstairs is consistently cool in the summer. In the winter you have access to a thermostat to control the temperature of the in-floor heating.
We are located above Westbank's town centre (restaurants, groceries, coffee etc.) in a residential–agricultural area of orchards and vineyards. The main attractions here are the lake, which is 5 minutes by car, and wineries ( 2-15 minutes to about a dozen of them). World class mountain biking is 5 minutes from our place, and there are a number of good local hikes. 15 minutes to cross-country skiing. 15 minutes to downtown Kelowna. A little over an hour to Big White Ski Resort. Our local farmer's market (July – October) is a 5 minute walk through family property. Public transit is a further 5 minutes (10 min total) on the road. We are located on a vineyard, so whatever you are driving you will find space to park it here.
Our's is the first strawbale home in West Kelowna. We built it in 2011 and have been living here since Christmas 2011. It is one of a kind. FULL DISCLOSURE: the house is approximately 98% complete. If things like floor and door trim are very important to you, then this is perhaps not your best option. We're working on it. Having said that, we have been living here in comfort for almost two years and everything is fully operational.
A word about us: Lisa is an elementary school teacher; her family has been living in Westbank for a century plus a few years. Philip is a PhD student and tender of grapes. Eloïse (4 years) is a negotiator. Oliver (1 year old) is into everything... as such, our house is child friendly.
We had a wonderful 3 night stay in the strawbale house. The house is large and open concept situated on a hill overlooking a small vineyard with glimpses of a lake view. The interior of the house is brand new, with wide open and comfortable living spaces. The house is surprisingly warm/well insulated (maybe not surprising?) and we did not need to use the wood stove though this was available. The kitchen was well stocked and we truly enjoyed making our own meals in it. We were presented with a bowl of peaches and bottle of wine on arrival - nice touches!
