If you want to retire each night away from the tourist filled hotels of the Big Island, be in a space that feels more like camping than hotel hopping and gives you a real feel of Hawaii, this is your place. Zen Hale is where I stayed and was a complete joy. The caretaker there was great (was welcomed with a hand delivered papaya) and the space was perfect for my "writer get-away" needs. It's a few miles drive to the beach, but well worth the travel to close out each day in a much more country like setting. Hope to stay here again very soon!
We are so happy that you enjoyed you time at Zen Hale. It is a very quiet and serene space perfect for writing and relaxing.
We hope you'll be back soon to share in the bounty of our retreat and the peaceful location.
You are a welcome guest and we hope to see you again soon.
Please tell Linda thank you for arranging this reservation.
Matthew and Rose
Matt was a sweetheart. My husband and I actually were not able to check in our first night because we couldn't find the house! We arrived to the house around 10pm, and according to the map, we thought we were trying to open the Zen house... but apparently not! We couldn't get a hold of Matt. But luckily we spent the night at our friend's rental and got in touch with Matt the next morning. I could tell Matt felt bad for us because he showered us with delicious fruits, fresh eggs, and Kona beer the next day! :) In the end, everything worked out. The Zen is a cozy and charming house with lots of privacy. We felt like we were in a Little House on a Prarie cabin. We didn't take advantage of the beaches nearby, but there were plenty of other activities on the big island. One thing I didn't expect was the insects we had in our house. But it's nature! It was the usual suspects like spiders and little ants here and there. Nothing us city folks couldn't handle. It was definitely a quiet and peaceful stay!!
I still feel so badly that you had difficulty when you arrived. The skies get pretty dark on Hawaii Island....great for star gazing but a flashlight necessity. I'm happy you came back for the rest of your stay to enjoy our peaceful retreat and share our bounty of fruits and eggs. The hurricane from a couple weeks ago brought quite a bit more moisture to our area of The Island which also brings extra insects. Things are dry now and the bugs have retreated. We owe you an extra night on your next visit to Hawaii. Thank you for being such great guests.

We had a great stay here...Matthew was super attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The location is great...ten minutes from all the sandy beaches. We loved the quietness of the place, and on clear days the beautiful sunsets. Would definitely go back!
It was extremely windy during our stay, which was unusual but made things very loud during the night in the Zen Hale. Rose and Matthew were very nice, thoughtful, hosts. I loved the sunsets, feeding the chickens and the entire sustainability aspects of their place. My healing session with Rose was an experience that goes way beyond anything words can describe.
We LOVED our stay at Zen Hale! The location could not be more ideal on the big island. Halfway between beautiful swimming beaches and a charming ranch town. The Kohala mountains to the north are breathtaking and Hilo and Kona are nearly equidistant on either side. The hale itself is even more beautiful than shown on airbnb. Formerly a gazebo, the bedroom is romantic and comfortable. The hale was very private and had tremendous views of the ocean and mountains. Venture down to the lunch truck in Kawaihae for killer fish tacos. We hope to visit again soon. Big mahalo from Brooklyn!

About the Host, Rose & Matthew
Moved to the Big Island 10 years ago from Portland, Oregon. I have lived all around the U.S. but I feel that this is my true home. Rose and I just spent an amazing month in Nepal and India, but the best part was coming back to Hawaii. In 1999, while attending an alternative building design seminar in Cottage Grove, Oregon, I was introduced to the concept of permaculture. Although the original focus of permaculture was sustainable food production, over time the philosophy of permaculture has expanded to encompass economic and social systems. Today I have my Permaculture Design Certification and also my Permaculture Teacher Training Certification. My passion now is working to make our Big Island property an example of permaculture design, and in cultivating Bodhisattva Healing Gardens to become a place where these healing ideas are shared.
