This property was beautiful with great views of the mountains and the ocean. We loved our early morning walks and the evening sunsets. Be sure to understand the location is off the beaten path, so it's perfect if you are wanting to avoid the tourist shops and resorts.

Hello Nicole, So happy you enjoyed your stay at Zen Hale and the property. Being off the beaten path but still only 4 miles from Waimea Town and 5 miles from Mauna Kea beach is exactly why we chose this location. Thank you again for your stay and review. We hope to see you again on a future visit to Hawaii Island. Aloha and Mahalo, Matthew and Rose

The small house is perfect. Roomier than the pictures. Perfect location just outside of Waimea. Beautiful setting. Very quiet and peaceful. Perfectly set up. I only met Matt while there, super friendly and helpful. Check in and booking was a breeze. Would gladly recommend to friends and colleagues.

The hosts made me feel welcome the first day with a greeting card and handing me a couple of papayas and a lime.

We stayed at Zen Hale five nights in August 2016. We made our booking at the last minute, and Matt was helpful answering questions very quickly, and he was quick to respond to every query during our stay. After staying at Zen Hale, we stayed three nights at a resort in Kona, and we pined for Zen Hale! Kona was a culture shock after the peacefulness of Kamuela. Zen Hale was the perfect place for our exploration of the Big Island. It is actually very centrally-located for exploring the island's best sites, and as the description says, close to the best beaches. Waimea, only 6 miles away, is a great little town with good food and amenities. If we hadn't been so excited to tour around seeing places, we would have been content to just be at Zen Hale. The views are spellbinding and a joy to wake up to each morning. The cottage is so lovely, very tastefully and expertly crafted & decorated. And the stars at night are an unreal wonder! The hosts have thought of everything too. Not only do they provide a fully stocked kitchen and a copy of the best Hawaii guidebook, but they also provided beach gear including big beach towels, chairs and boogie boards! It would have been nice to meet Matt & Rose, but I didn't even see them once even though (I think) they're living in a house on the farm very near Zen Hale. The flipside of this is that our experience was very private, and it felt like we had their paradise all to ourselves. A few recommendations to visitors: 1) If you're at all interested in the stars/cosmos, go to the Keck Observatory office in Waimea. You'll get a fascinating free tour! 2) If you plan to hike out to the Kilauea Pu'u 'O'o lava flow, bring a flashlight or headlamp per traveler. A big mahalo to Matt & Rose for sharing their heavenly place!

Super cute, clean and nicely furnished cottage in a great location for exploring the Northern part of the island. Matt was a great host. The cottage is very warm to be in during the day but did cool down nicely in the evening and night. Very close to awesome beaches!

Aloha Heather, I'm happy you enjoyed your stay at Zen Hale. We were definitely experiencing some warmer than usual weather during your visit. Our 1700' elevation is normally the perfect condition for warm....but not hot days....and cool nights. Perfect for sitting outside counting stars or sleeping indoors. Thank you again for allowing us to be your hosts. We hope you will visit us when you travel to Hawaii Island again. Mahalo, Matthew and Rose

Matthew and Rose made us feel very welcome with good instructions and some friendly interactions; we enjoyed meeting them both. Zen Hale was a great location for us to explore the northern part of the island, including beaches and coastline. The property, with wonderful plantings, trees, birds, beautiful chickens, and wonderful views was wonderful to spend time relaxing within. Walks on the quiet road in the surrounding residential area of large properties were enjoyable in the cooler evenings. Most nights the skies became clear and filled with stars; it's wonderfully dark there. Zen Hale was a perfect size for the two of us, with a small kitchen for simple meals, a very comfortable bed with a wonderful view of the trees and the night sky, a nice shower in the bath, and open space for eating, yoga, and stretching The birds were a joy, as were the beautiful heritage chickens. We enjoyed the farmer's markets in Waimea and beach time during many days.

Moved to the Big Island 10 years ago from Portland, Oregon. I have lived all around the U.S. but I feel that this is my true home. Rose and I just spent an amazing month in Nepal and India, but the best part was coming back to Hawaii. In 1999, while attending an alternative building design seminar in Cottage Grove, Oregon, I was introduced to the concept of permaculture. Although the original focus of permaculture was sustainable food production, over time the philosophy of permaculture has expanded to encompass economic and social systems. Today I have my Permaculture Design Certification and also my Permaculture Teacher Training Certification. My passion now is working to make our Big Island property an example of permaculture design, and in cultivating Bodhisattva Healing Gardens to become a place where these healing ideas are shared.
