Bedroom plus sitting room.
BEDROOM + SITTING ROOM
We love our porch, and you will too. Stroll up to the corner to buy dinner, and enjoy it on our cozy porch that feels like a tree house. Or for something different some evening, ask to use our kitchen or the grill on our back deck to cook your dinner.
YOUR ROOMS UPSTAIRS
You get a small but sunny bedroom with a double bed (54 in 76 in...137 cm x 193 cm) plus the adjacent sitting room with TV, Internet, and even a laptop if you didn't bring your own, plus a microwave. Your mini-fridge will be stocked with complimentary goodies on arrival. The upstairs bath is 95% yours. (My office is upstairs, but our bed-bath is downstairs, so I may occasionally want to use your toilet--but you will always have priority). In addition to the doors on your rooms, a curtain provides extra privacy as you pass between them.
MAX OCCUPANCY -- 2
A bus on our corner will get you to the Roslyn subway within 10 minutes in rush hour. And from there it's a 10-15 minute Metro ride to most anywhere downtown. Get lost or tired and we'll come pick you up.
Our street of cute little houses is quiet--but just over a rise a half block away you'll find shops, a grocery store, Curves, and a yoga studio, as well as these restaurants:
-Portabellos American Cafe
-Pasha Middle Eastern Cafe (our favorite)
-Carriage House, food of old Europe
-Baskin Robins/Dunkin Donuts
-Kite Runner, Afghan food
My husband is a retired teacher and director of language schools who has also been a bartender and an actor (catch a glimpse of him in "House of Cards" TV series with Kevin Spacey.) I teach Web Design and am interested in conflict resolution--especially among world religions. We speak Spanish and French.
WHAT'S THE CATCH?
My husband is a contender for the Olympics of power napping and likes to train in the living room. So we'll ask you not to hang out there--just tiptoe through, please.
We're eager to meet you!

Interaction with Guests
We are right downstairs whenever you need us.
You have access to the whole house except my office upstairs, our bed/bath downstairs, and the living room downstairs where my husband likes to nap. And although we ask that you "tiptoe through" the living room, you don't have to worry about making normal noise in the dining room or kitchen. If Andy feels his space is secure, he'll doze happily. FULL DISCLOSURE: I've been known to nap or watch TV in the living room myself!
Continental Breakfast is provided for your first morning, and we clean up from it. Coffee is always available.
Your sitting room has two TV trays to let you picnic there. Both paper plates and regular plates are provided. If you use the regular plates, please carry them downstairs to wash in the basket provided. (No dishwashing in your bathroom sink, please).
COOKING IN THE KITCHEN / EATING DOWNSTAIRS
If you want to cook in the kitchen, let us know in advance so we can plan our meals around your timing. Likewise, if you want to eat in the dining room, front porch, or back deck, please "reserve" the space. E.g., if you reserve the porch, we'll take the dining room. If you reserve the dining room in winter, we might go to our favorite cafe on the corner. You are welcome to use our condiments, salad dressing, etc. Just ask please.
We'll do breakfast dishes. Please clean up the kitchen after any other use of it.
We will wash sheets and towels once a week. Let us know if you need a change sooner. Personal laundry also done by request. A spare set of sheets is in your closet if you want to change the bed. Put laundry in bathroom cabinet basket.
Trash is collected at dawn Wednesday. We'll pick up the trash in your waste baskets on Tuesday. If you need to empty them sooner, please leave the bags in the kitchen.
Our cleaning lady comes just before each guest and every 2 weeks. So depending on when you arrive, you may have to clean your own bathroom etc if you don't want to await her next visit.
Your full-size bed is suitable for a single or couple. One child can be accommodated by request if he/she is comfortable sleeping in a portable crib (PackNPlay or Co-sleeper) or on a sleeping bag on the floor of your sitting room.
Please keep volume of your TV moderate, especially before 9am. We will do the same and happily turn ours off on request. FEEL FREE TO ASK US TO TURN OURS OFF OR DOWN. Really, we mean it. My husband can just as well watch TV in our bedroom which is far removed downstairs.
Teri and Andy were super friendly, accommodating and helpful. They have a lovely home and are great hosts. Definitely recommend.
It's really nice to stay in Teri and Andy's house. They offered two rooms for us. A bedroom and a sitting room. We have TV, microwave and fridge in the sitting room and a lot of informations such as maps, bus schedule info, restaurants nearby. The location is very convenient. We can walk to bus station in only 2 minutes. The stay is very comfortable. Teri and Andy are great hosts. If I have a chance travel to DC in the future I would definitely stay with them again. Thank you so much, Teri and Andy.
The room is tidy and nice.
The location is a bit far from the center of the city, but not too hard to find.
The bed is big enough for both of us, but not as huge as it seems in the picture.
Overall, both me and my friend really enjoyed our stay :)
Teri & Andy were good hosts, very friendly and helpful. The house is located in Arlington and it's pretty easy to get into DC using the metro bus system. Space is quite limited so be careful about bringing too much luggage :-)
I have found a home away from home in the DC area. Terry and Andy are thoughtful hosts and their accommodations are clean and comfortable. The house is on a quiet side street with ample parking, yet close to stores and restaurants. As a business traveler, the location is convenient for trips into DC and out in any direction on the compass.
I occupied the second floor which included a bedroom, a full bath, and an office with desk, frig, microwave, easy chair, and flat screen TV. I had free access to the laundry in the basement and kitchen.
I come to the DC area about one week per month. In the past, I stayed in nice hotels at discounted rates. Without any equivocation, I much prefer the ambiance and overall experience of the Murphy house.
Teri & Andy are very kind people. Their house is very cozy , clean and comfortable. They give us full privacy on the second floor. Teri also gave us detail information on trip and nearby resteraunt. The house is very convenient for public transportation. we can pick up several buses in a 5 minute walking. If you stay two or three days visiting washington DC, Teri 's place is a really good place. Thanks for your good accomondation.
Teri and Andy were splendid hosts. My accommodations had plenty of space and stayed warm, despite running into the first winter weather. They fed me a continental breakfast on my first morning and several helpful pieces of advice to help me enjoy my time in DC. The house is also close to a metro bus stop and I found downtown access to be very convenient. Would stay here again!
I teach writing and Web Design, but my passion is for philosophy, groups that work, and mediation across religious differences. My husband is retired from teaching, writing, acting, and directing a language school.
