About This Listing
This is the family home of an artist on the famous Portobello Road and market. The road is very busy on Saturdays, but peaceful the rest of the week. (Except during the Notting Hill Carnival which is at the end of August).
I would describe my home as "shabby chic" rather than super smart, and typical of the old style of Portobello houses. It is clean, light, airy artistic and comfortable . The room has a double bed, and is large and comfortable! There is a little roof terrace garden with table and chairs, which is lovely to sit out on, on warm summer night! The apartment has wifi throughout. Please note that I have 2 lovely cats!
Portobello Road is a wonderful and friendly area, full of cafes and bars. There is always interesting shopping and browsing in the market and surrounding shops. The market takes place every weekend, and you can browse the amazing antiques stalls, or maybe pick up an vintage bargain. There are also lots of amazing food stalls, selling cuisine from every corner of the world! During the week the street is a quieter, as the market stalls have gone, however the are is still charming and bohemian. Notting Hill is packed with one off coffee shops, restaurants, boutique stores, and antique shops.
It is a half hour walk from the house to Hyde Park. Points of interest in the park include Kensington Gardens, where James Barrie wrote Peter Pan. A lovely statue of Peter Pan and Tinkerbell the fairy, the Serpentine Gallery, Speakers Corner and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial. The park also plays host to many festivals and concerts during the summer months.
The area also benefits from great transportation links. The house is just steps from Ladbroke Grove tube station, which gives you access to the Circle Line and Hammersmith and City Line. We are also just a short walk (around 15 minutes) to Notting Hill Gate. From here you can catch the Central Line.
!. No smoking in the house, We have a roof terrace with table and chairs, and you are welcome to smoke out there,
2. No visitors. Portobello Road is full of lovely cafes and bars to meet friends in. This rule is just for protection of all in our home.
3.Not a rule. I just hope that you will comfortable here, and feel that you are staying in a home from home.
I exchanged a couple of messages with the host before my arrival and she was very kind. The room per se is as in the pictures, spacious and full of light. During my stay I never met the host. Other people were staying in the house, but I was not informed about that. For sure there was a man in the room next to mine. In my opinion, it would be fair to inform the guest if other people live or stay in the property. The neighbourhood is very nice. This said, I cannot recommend Julie's place, especially in terms of cleanliness, decor and general atmosphere.
Dear Veronica, I am sorry that I was not at home, as I had to got to a family emergency, I did prepare your room with care, I am usually at home keeping things clean and tidy and running smoothy, I am sorry that that message was not passed on to you. I do have two rooms as it says on my profile, and it is a family house, It was my son's friend who let you in and showed you around. Best wishes, Julie
Me and my girlfriend stayed at Julie's for four nights, and we really enjoyed our stay.
The room is just as described - light and spacious. The location is perfect, and it's easy to get downtown and back (3 min walk from Ladbroke Grove station, good bus connections). Also, the area around is full of life.
As a host Julie is very helpful. We had trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi, and Julie let us borrow her computer to find what we needed. On the last day we were allowed to leave our luggage in the apartment after check-out time, as our flight left late in the evening.
The apartment in itself is very charming and cosy, but if you need things to be spick and span this might not be the right place. For us it was completely unproblematic, and we enjoyed being in an apartment with visible signs of life.
Julie has two very affectionate cats, which only adds to the general charm of the house.
We will definitely check the availability at Julie's the next time we go to London!
A comfortable, spacious & light room - the photo is a true representation. Julie was a friendly, relaxed host, and the house is charming. The kitchen was fairly messy, but Julie had had friends staying for New Year, so the mess was understandable! Great Notting Hill location. I'd stay here again any time.
