Extreme comfort in an immaculate and beautiful old pre-war North Manhattan apartment with safe easy access to center of the city. A REAL New York neighbohood full of history and friendly people!

The Space

Come stay in my lovely Manhattan apartment during the beautiful Summer and Fall weeks of NY. All questions about the apartment are answered in the description, so please contact me ONLY after you've read the full description and are sure of the dates you will be needing a room, and I will be happy to discuss with you. Very clean, quiet, luxurious room in an old but well-maintained elevator pre-war apartment building, which is in an historical Northern Manhattan neighborhood called Inwood. The neighborhood is a gem. Rated one of the safest in the city, Inwood is a thriving and diverse community of artists, musicians, students and professionals. Plenty of live music with wonderful food and drink just steps away. We are very close to major subways, #1 train, and #A train (5 and 10 minutes walk) and surrounded by beautiful parks, artsy cafes, wine bars, juice bars, Irish pubs and a weekend organic farmer's market. We have drop-in Yoga, tennis courts and the beautiful Green Way bike trail along the Hudson River with a bike shop providing rental bikes, and a boat yard. Our wooded parks have walking/hiking trails and a nature preservation center. There is very affordable and safe 24 hour parking within three blocks of the building and occasionally free street parking when available.

We are 40 minutes from JFK and about 35 minutes from LaGuardia airports, depending on time of day. You are guaranteed a seat on the subway from either of our subway stations at any time of day or night. By taxi we are a straight shot (20 minutes) down the West Side Highway to the city's most popular destinations, making it very easy to get home. The two subway lines are very safe and easy. 20 minutes to Central Park on the "A" train and the "1" line. 30 minutes to Times Square. The walk home from the stations are short and very safe in this family-oriented neighborhood. Your room here is large, clean and private. You will experience no noise disturbances here from the building. The room has a very comfortable standard-sized Murphy bed for two, large flat screen TV (Netflix and network channels only), Free WiFi high-speed internet, quiet air conditioner, working fireplace, dining table and comfy sofa (which sleeps a third person) and a very nice big oscillating fan for extra comfort. There is armoire space to hang clothes which also holds extra pillows and blankets for your use, and dresser drawer space as well. Shared bathroom in the hall (shared only with myself, no other guests) with large luxurious tub (for bubbly herbal baths after a long day of exploring the city) and epic NYC shower. Fresh soft linens are provided. There are no pets here and the only one you are sharing the apartment with is me. In addition to being your wonderful Host, I have my separate personal/professional life and so keep mostly to myself while providing you with utmost privacy.

I provide a complimentary self-serve continental breakfast (coffee, tea, toasts, mini bagels and cream cheese or English muffins with butter and jams, and sometimes juice or fruit), and as a professional Chef I can offer you the option to arrange a wonderful meal for a separate fee.

I have lived in Manhattan for over 20 years and am happy to provide you with any information you might need to enjoy your stay in the city.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE TO GUESTS AFTER YOU BOOK WITH ME: Please make sure to read, print out, and BRING your travel itinerary which is in the address and directions that you will receive on this site after booking. This way, if I am not available by phone to talk you through it during your commute, you will have exact and easy directions to get to my place! Check-in time is 2PM. If you need a different arrival time you must notify me in advance and I can accommodate. Unfortunately I cannot accommodate guests who are flying into Newark Airport with late afternoon arrivals, unless you are willing to take a taxi straight from the airport into the city. This is because the Newark shuttle can take hours to get into the city resulting in delayed evening landings needing check-in times close to midnight or later.

Hope to see you soon!

Guest Access

Guests have their own key, limited access to the kitchen unless a guest is a very experienced cook. This is for safety/liability reasons. There is no curfew here and guests are welcomed to come and go at all hours with their key, though I prefer that guests do spend the majority of their day out in the city rather than staying in the room most of the time. The reason for this is that I work in the apartment in the next room, it's a small apartment, and best suited for tourists who want to be out and about.

Interaction with Guests

I am very welcoming and accommodating of Guest needs. Once checked in I am available to contact for any questions either in the apartment or in email, but do not generally have much time to spend socially or entertaining. For single travelers who are less independent and seeking companionship from hosts, this may not be the arrangement they are seeking.

  • I enjoyed my stay at Grace's. She's a very friendly and warm person, and kind enough to give me the keys in advance, since she couldn't be there the night I arrived. The room is very pretty, comfortable, and clean - as is the whole apartment. It's conveniently close to two metro stations (Penn Station is around 30-40 minutes ride from the apartment), and the neighbourhood seemed safe. All in all, I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay in NY!

  • Had a lovely short stay at Grace's. The apartment was beautifully decorated, very clean, convenient to get to subway and comfy. Grace is a wonderful host, graciously allowing me to have an earlier check in time and providing everything that I needed. She is very generous with the food in her kitchen. I find the breakfast a lovely touch - I had mini bagels one morning, and a muffin the next. Thanks for everything!

  • Grace Riley is a fabulous hostess with a lovely apartment in a splendid neighborhood in a terrific city.
Living spaces in NYC are known to be compact, but the room I stayed in (the only one Ms. Riley offers) is very comfortable. It holds a table, four chairs, a chest of drawers, a couch, a tall book case, an armoire, a reading chair, a Murphy bed and more. The Murphy is very firm and comfortable. The room is a bit crowded with the bed open, but when closed you can really stretch out.
The kitchen and bathroom are both very beautifully appointed. It’s amazing what Ms. Riley has done with such modest spaces. The apartment has cross ventilation and is fresh and airy. There’s excellent water pressure and plenty of hot water. Ms. Riley keeps the place immaculate. It’s a wonderful place to return to after a long day tramping through the neighborhood.
And what a neighborhood! It has mostly pre-war buildings, a mix of ethnicities and ages, two major subway lines, and plenty of good food. Ms. Riley’s place is steps away from both Isham Park, a small, rather formal park with the biggest ginko tree in NYC, and much larger Inwood Hill Park. With steep slopes and dense virgin forests, it’s an amazing place, especially for Manhattan.
Ms. Riley is a charming person, very helpful and very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about-Inwood. She has prepared a handbook of local attractions, and places to shop, eat and relax. The house rules are designed to maintain privacy in a modest sized space with shared amenities and are easy to understand and follow.
You really couldn’t ask for anything more. I would not hesitate to stay with Grace Riley in Inwood NYC again. I recommend you do so when you have the chance.

  • We enjoyed our brief stay with Grace. This is a wonderfully comfortable home. It was nice to have Grace there as our host and resident guide to the City. She did a wonderful job of meeting our needs.

  • Everything was just as advertised. Grace is a wonderful host. The room was awesome and a quintessential NYC apartment complete with a fire escape! We woke up one morning to the sound of a mourning dove on one of the steps. We could not have asked for better accommodations. We felt safe in the neighborhood. The subway was a 4 block walk and about 30 minutes to Times Square. The Indian Road cafe makes a great latte. We saved a lot of money making breakfast in the kitchen. And, Grace, a professional chef, made us some chicken wings and ravioli one night - delicious! The bed was very comfy although it was a double, so if people prefer a queen or king it might seem a little small. Overall, this was a great experience and we highly recommend it!

  • I cannot say enough good things about Grace and her wonderful place that I was lucky enough to stay in during my visit to New York.

Grace is a wonderful host; she welcomed me to the apartment and, being an experienced host, is helpful with advice on nearby attractions and how to get around New York. She is also a wonderful cook and was kind enough to cook me dinner one evening which was much appreciated!

The room itself is like having your own studio apartment; double bed, big comfortable sofa, a desk, and a TV with NetFlix! The apartment is a 5 minute walk from a major Subway line from which you can easily travel down to wherever you want in Manhattan. The area is very safe and I never had any problems when I had to walk through the area late at night or early in the morning. There is a beautiful forest minutes away for those who like the outdoors; you can go for a walk in the forest in the morning and then a single Subway journey brings you into the heart of NYC. I much preferred staying in this environment than the hustle and bustle of downtown Manhattan.

The apartment quickly felt like 'home' and I enjoying coming back there in the evenings to watch TV and relax after a busy day around Manhattan.

If I ever return to New York, I would have no hesitation staying in Grace's place again. Far better amenities than you would find at any hotel, at a fraction of the price.

    Thanks again Grace!

  • The apartment was lovely and very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay with Grace. She was welcoming and very helpful. She was very understanding of our late hours. The only drawback was the distance from Time's Square. It is quite a ride on the subway but we managed to enjoy that too. All in all, it was a very nice stay.

  • I'm so sorry my review is so late! I had such a lovely time in NY staying in Graces apartment. Quiet neighborhood, close to the subway, great bathroom and the bed is fantastic! I loved the breakfast, haven't eaten so much nutella since I was a kid :)

I would absolutely recommend Grace and would definitely stay there again!

  • Grace is a kind host with a cozy home. The guest room is comfortable, and shared spaces are made convenient; everything is clean and orderly. She is unobtrusive yet accommodating. The daily appearance of specially arranged breakfast items are a nice touch, indicative of her approach.

As stated, her home is conveniently located near two subway lines, and the neighborhood is quiet. If you'd like to have a relaxed respite from downtown, I highly recommend staying here.

  • Grace's home was warm and inviting and filled with all of the comforts of home. Grace was a welcoming and gracious hostess…she even made us sandwiches when we arrived because we had been driving all day. She provided umbrellas for the rain and a yummy continental breakfast daily. She respected our privacy and made sure all our needs were met. I would highly recommend staying with Grace.

I am a Natural Gourmet Chef and Health Consultant. I work from my home so I am there often, but I also travel often as I serve clients all over the country. I am originally from California so I try to visit when I can. I enjoy reading, biking, yoga and of course cooking. My home is a pre-war apartment in an historical neighborhood of Northern Manhattan. We are five to ten minutes walk from two major subway lines and surrounded by beautiful parks, quaint cafes and wine bars. We are fifteen minutes from Midtown. I have been told that I am a wonderful host and that my space is one of the most comfortable, cozy and luxurious around. I serve a continental breakfast and as a professional chef I am always happy to make arrangements for other meals upon request. The room is private, clean, quiet and extremely comfortable. There is room to hang clothing, a dining space, a comfy sofa, working fireplace, air conditioning, high def flat screen TV, high-speed internet and a very comfortable hotel style Murphy bed. The shared bathroom is in the hall and has a wonderful shower and large luxurious tub. Linens are provided. There are no pets here and the space is very clean. I think you'll find it to your liking and I am very happy to provide you with any information you might need to enjoy your stay in the city.
