This beautiful home situated in the peaceful neighborhood of South Bar is sure to sooth the soul. Enjoy long walks along the ocean on to pick up fresh lobsters at the pound. Enjoy the gourmet kitchen, large yard and the short drive to all amenities.
Beautifully renovated turn of the century Farm House in the picturesque community of South Bar in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia…
The Farm House was originally built in 1911 and sits on over 7 acres of land stretching down to its own beach on Sydney Harbor. This property was in the same family since the 1700's when this area was first settled. The home was renovated in 2012, including a large Chef’s Kitchen with new appliances and large island.
Main floor - large dining room, living room, kitchen, bathroom and laundry room (with new laundry appliances). We have a flat screen TV in the living room and wireless high speed internet, we do not have Cable TV but have cables on site to hook up laptops and Ipads. There is also a DVD player. The kitchen really steals the show with its large island and all the things you need to create culinary magic!
Second floor - four bedrooms and large bathroom with huge soaker tub overlooking Sydney Harbor. Almost every room provides views of Sydney Harbor. There is one queen bed, two double beds and one bunk bed (sleeps 8 comfortably).
The basement and attic are currently undeveloped and locked off.
This home is conveniently located within 10/15 minutes of almost everything including the Airport, the University, Downtown Sydney and the Mall. It sits on a beautiful stretch of road that runs along the ocean front from Sydney to New Waterford. Our neighbors are very friendly and have lived in the area their whole lives, great people to talk to about the history of the area.
You can walk down the beach to the lobster pound to pick up fresh lobster off the boats for dinner (during Lobster season). Or spend time picking raspberries and blueberries on the land.
This home is perfect for young families with children, older families who want to unplug, couples on a romantic getaway, bikers, events such as birthdays or reunions and professionals on work contracts. Kids can safely play in the meadows or walk down to the beach, picking berries along the way.

But the one thing that stands out over everything else when visiting the area are the people - they are truly some of the friendliest caring people you will meet, and they speak with a great accent all their own!
In terms of things to do, this area provides endless opportunities...

Interaction with Guests
We have a landscaper and a housekeeper. The landscaper may show up during your stay. The housekeeper comes after check out unless otherwise requested. We have a handy man on call also should any emergencies arise.
This neighborhood is very peaceful and great for walks along the water or the New Waterford road. The neighbors are friendly and very helpful. This area has great views of North Sydney and the harbor.
Bicycles or a vehicle are the best way to get around. The roads and views make for incredible motorbiking as well.
Other Things to Note
Please strip the beds you use, place used towels in the bath tub and throw out any perishable food - this is greatly appreciated!
Treat our beautiful farm house with the same love and attention you treat your own home. Nova Scotia has a great waste recycling program, as such, we ask you do your best to use the various bins we have to separate garbage.
We would ask that you not use our neighbor's property to access the water, they have a private drive way which leads directly into their garden and should be respected. There are several other paths to the water, some more adventurous than others! And of course, this is a non smoking home, if you do smoke, please do so outside.
Can you please strip the beds you slept in so our housekeeper knows what to wash.
Put all used towels in the bath tub.
Also, please throw away any perishables before you leave.
This place is beautiful! Myself and four other ladies were in Sydney for work, and this place was such a treat to go "home" to. Rick and Nadine were great with communicating beforehand, and the place was just as pictured! The view was better than I expected!
The reservation was canceled 293 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
We had a lovely stay. The house has the rustic charm of an old farmhouse enhanced with the convenience of modern appliances and bathrooms. The setting is peaceful and quiet but is within easy driving distance of shops and sightseeing/activity options. Communication with Rick and Nadine was efficient and pleasant. It was a great place to stay for our exploration of Cape Breton.
Everything was exactly as described.
Response rates from hosts were great.
Our kids loved the beach area and the adults appreciated everything being available and easily accessible.
Would definitely recommend!
We had a most WONDERFUL stay at Rick & Nadines Farm house in Sydney. The house was exactly what we were looking for, for our family and the property couldn't get any more pretty. The lobster was absolutely delicious and we definitely ate our fair share during our week! The rocky beach at the bottom of the property is gorgeous and definitely all your own!
For our first family vacation to Nova Scotia we couldn't have made a better choice and will definitely be back in the future!!!
We had a great time staying at Rick and Nadine's house just outside of Sydney. The house proved to be a great base for excursions to the Cabot Trail and a welcome respite from days in the car or playing on the beach. The house itself is large (far more room than the three of us needed, but a nice opportunity to stretch out), very well appointed (for me the kitchen, which is amazing, was the highlight; for our little girl the chests full of toys were a very pleasant surprise!) and is suffused with character and charm. And the view out over the bay, especially at sunset, is spectacular. Rick was an excellent host, quick to respond to inquiries and provide helpful information. In all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying here. Thanks!
Nadine and I enjoy spending time at the farm with our children, friends and family. We enjoy cooking and going on adventures which are a couple reasons we love this place. Walking down the beach to the lobster pound to get dinner is quite an awesome experience, especially finishing it up with some great Nova Scotian Wine. We both work in the industrial contracting sector and have managed to find time to spend on both coasts of Canada. We like to share our lives with others and enjoy meeting new people. We believe in a simple lifestyle where food is grown and eaten locally, neighbors are respected and cared for and our children can grow up in a positive and sustainable environment.
