The Space

Beautifully renovated turn of the century Farm House in the picturesque community of South Bar in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia…

The Farm House was originally built in 1911 and sits on over 7 acres of land stretching down to its own beach on Sydney Harbor. This property was in the same family since the 1700's when this area was first settled. The home was renovated in 2012, including a large Chef’s Kitchen with new appliances and large island.

Main floor - large dining room, living room, kitchen, bathroom and laundry room (with new laundry appliances). We have a flat screen TV in the living room and wireless high speed internet, we do not have Cable TV but have cables on site to hook up laptops and Ipads. There is also a DVD player. The kitchen really steals the show with its large island and all the things you need to create culinary magic!
Second floor - four bedrooms and large bathroom with huge soaker tub overlooking Sydney Harbor. Almost every room provides views of Sydney Harbor. There is one queen bed, two double beds and one bunk bed (sleeps 8 comfortably).
The basement and attic are currently undeveloped and locked off.

This home is conveniently located within 10/15 minutes of almost everything including the Airport, the University, Downtown Sydney and the Mall. It sits on a beautiful stretch of road that runs along the ocean front from Sydney to New Waterford. Our neighbors are very friendly and have lived in the area their whole lives, great people to talk to about the history of the area.

You can walk down the beach to the lobster pound to pick up fresh lobster off the boats for dinner (during Lobster season). Or spend time picking raspberries and blueberries on the land.

This home is perfect for young families with children, older families who want to unplug, couples on a romantic getaway, bikers, events such as birthdays or reunions and professionals on work contracts. Kids can safely play in the meadows or walk down to the beach, picking berries along the way.

  • We had a great stay in this house. We particularly appreciated the deep bath and it's fantastic sunset views, the well-equipped kitchen and the firm, comfortable bed. Rick was easily contactable when we needed help and was understanding and gracious with the minor issues that arose.

  • Rick and Nadine's farmhouse near Sydney, NS was the perfect place to stay for our time in Cape Breton. The house is beautiful, recently renovated, but keeping the old farmhouse feel to it too. The views out to the water were wonderful. Rick was very responsive to all of our questions. I would highly recommend this place, and would definitely stay there again.

  • Loved the place!
    Nice quite, private beach!
There was a small issue with the trail running to the beach but Rich got that settled very quickly. Thanks!

  • While we did not have the pleasure of meeting Rick and Nadine, communication via email was easy and everything was ready for us and clean on arrival. The house is quite large and high ceilings with great updates while retaining some old charm, like original (I assume) stained glass windows, makes for a charming farmhouse.

The kitchen has everything you need, and especially convenient for travelers is the availability of laundry facilities and a nice soaking tub.

We did not find the correct paths to the beach front, but grey weather and plans to see other sites such as Fort Louisbourg kept us from pursuing this further.

Having only the 2 of us, a 4 bedroom house was more than needed.

Wifi was strong and reliable, also a welcome touch.

We recommend this farmhouse to anyone.

We also recommend a restraint in Sidney called "flavor".

  • My friends and I attended a conference at Cape Breton University and shared Rick and Nadine's house during our stay in Cape Breton. There were 6 adults and 3 children in our group and their house was absolutely perfect for us. The kids loved the swing and beach access and the adults reveled in the lobster dinners, sights, and sounds of Cape Breton for 5 days. Highly recommend this lovely property as your home away from home when exploring Cape Breton.

  • This farmhouse comfortably held 6 of us for 10 days. The kitchen was awesome as was the access to fresh seafood. Location provided easy access to amenities of Sydney, remote beaches as well as the park just outside of Glacé Bay. Our golfers enjoyed the inexpensive and close by golf courses and the conversations with locals who joined them in the game. Folks were very friendly everywhere we went. The drive to the national park is over two hours, but an early start gets you right around the Cabot Trail with time for some hikes. A real treat was the very short ferry at English Bay and the fish wagon for a yummy supper.

  • From our team : "It was great, the house was amazing and we all had a wonderful stay", "We had an entire house to ourselves and it was so nice. Nicest accommodations",
From myself : Nadine and Rick were extremely great at communicating and making sure we had everything we needed. They even offered to send us info on what to do in the area, and some local contacts to meet, all on short notice! Thanks for everything, we will definitely be contacting you again this summer (if the house isn't already all booked up!)

  • Had an enjoyable stay at this lovely renovated house. It had lots of space and was in immaculate shape with everything you could possibly need for your stay. Having a dishwasher and washer/dryer was very handy too! This house is in a quiet area with beautiful views of the ocean. Rick and Nadine were extremely accommodating hosts. We'll definitely be staying here again when we are able to make our way back to The Cape.

Nadine and I enjoy spending time at the farm with our children, friends and family. We enjoy cooking and going on adventures which are a couple reasons we love this place. Walking down the beach to the lobster pound to get dinner is quite an awesome experience, especially finishing it up with some great Nova Scotian Wine. We both work in the industrial contracting sector and have managed to find time to spend on both coasts of Canada. We like to share our lives with others and enjoy meeting new people. We believe in a simple lifestyle where food is grown and eaten locally, neighbors are respected and cared for and our children can grow up in a positive and sustainable environment.
