The space
A gorgeous stone walkway leads you into this charming, century-old home, where you’re welcomed by 9-foot ceilings, original hardwood floors and mouldings, and a wide central hallway connecting every room.

The cozy living room features a beautiful original wood-burning fireplace, while the spacious open-concept kitchen and dining area offers modern convenience with stainless steel appliances, a farmhouse-style sink, and durable concrete countertops. The home includes three bedrooms — one with a stackable washer and dryer — and a full bathroom with both a tub and shower, all thoughtfully arranged on a single level.

Step outside to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Sip your morning coffee or evening wine on the covered front veranda while soaking in ocean views and fresh bay air. In the backyard, a second deck with a BBQ offers a more private space for dining or relaxing.

Millie’s Cottage is named in honour of Amelia “Millie” Jones, who called this home her own from 1949 until her passing in 1980. Millie was a cherished figure in the community - especially adored by the children in her neighbourhood. She taught local girls to knit and crochet, and was known to reward little helpers with their first nickels or dimes for running errands. Her gentle spirit, kindness, and warm hospitality left a lasting impression - one that still lingers in the walls of this home.

While you’re in Botwood, don’t miss the town’s most celebrated artistic treasure: the Botwood Mural Arts Society (BMAS). This passionate group of volunteers has helped bring 19 large-scale, hand-painted murals to life, each crafted by internationally acclaimed artists. These stunning works of art tell the rich and layered stories of Botwood’s past — from aviation to Indigenous history, wartime service, and more.

You can explore the murals on your own, or — depending on availability — arrange a guided tour through BMAS volunteers or local summer students. Visit their website or social media to learn more, view art for purchase, and browse their collection of locally inspired books and puzzles.

And finally, no stay in Botwood is complete without visiting the Beothuk statues on Blueberry Hill — affectionately known by locals as The Flats. These breathtaking bronze sculptures overlook the mouth of the Exploits River, where the Beothuk once travelled by canoe from Beothuk Lake to the Bay of Exploits for seasonal fishing — a route they followed for generations.

The statues honour Demasduit, her husband Nonosabasut, and their infant child. Demasduit, believed to be one of the last of the Beothuk, died in captivity over 200 years ago aboard the HMS Grasshopper, which was moored in Botwood’s harbour at the time.

The full sculpture, titled “Baetha” — the Beothuk word for “going home” — was created by renowned Newfoundland sculptor Morgan MacDonald and unveiled on September 30, 2024. It’s a moving and powerful tribute to the Indigenous people whose lives and legacy are forever connected to this land.

Millie's is located in a peaceful little neighborhood in the heart of Botwood overlooking the beautiful Bay of Exploits and the downtown region.

The cottage is located at 11 Mill Road, within a minute's walk to downtown where you'll find restaurants, groceries, banking, a post office, a pharmacy, a hardware store, a convenience store, hair salons and more. Along the way enjoy the town's 18 absolutely beautiful hand-painted murals by international artists, which depict the rich history of the town. Guided tours are available through the Botwood Mural Arts Society which has an office just up the road at 6 Church Road.

Millie's is also located within a 10 minute walk to the historic air base which features the Botwood Heritage Center and Flying Boat Museum, as well as Killick Island where you can walk along a short causeway to explore the island itself and see the ammunition bunkers that were built during the Second World War. There is usually a restaurant on the base as well.
