The Space

This light-filled studio, is the perfect place for those willing to experience the Lisbon old center. It is right in the heart of the city and on the other hand, far away from the busy and noisy capital :) The studio is very cozy and nice, great choice for an economic stay without renouncing the deserved comfort of a visitor.

Located on Pena, a historical district of Lisbon and one of the seven hills of the city. On the studio's street is the birthplace of Amália Rodrigues, the Fado's Diva. A bit up the street, the visitor can also find the house where Luís de Camões (portuguese famous poet) lived.

Many tourists pass through Pena every day, down and up the hill!

Down the hill, is Rossio, Praça da Figueira, Avenida da Liberdade, Largo de São Domingos and Rua das Portas de Santo Antão.

Up the hill, 5 minutes walking from the studio, you can get to Campo de Sant'Ana with its nice garden "blessed" by Dr. Sousa Martins, saint to whom many offer their devotion, right in front of the beautiful and graceful building of Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon. Above you can also visit Ascensor do Lavra (old lift) and a few meters ahead, Jardim do Torel. Here you can have a comfortable rest and watch the beautiful sunset, with its amazing views on the Avenida da Liberdade and Baixa. The experts say that in the trendy and cozy café of Torel, one can eat the tastier chévre toast of Lisbon (something not Portuguese, but very tasty!!!!). The Jardim do Torel, surrounded by splendid old palaces, is (still) one of the treasures of the romantic Lisbon, saved from the confusion of other points of the city. Keep the secret ;)

For organic enthusiastics, it is available on demand an organic basket with fresh vegs and fruits. I pick it up in an organic farm in Azeitão, a little place 30 Km's away from Lisbon, worth a visit (ask me how!). Azeitão is a picturesque place, untouched nature with fresh oceanic breeze and "birthplace" of the delicious Tortas de Azeitão and Queijo de Azeitão, as well as region of great awarded wines.

The kitchen is equipped with stove, refrigerator, washing machine, toaster, coffee maker, kettle, electric juicer, all the necessary utensils to prepare meals. Hair dryer, heaters and fans, TV, WI-FI internet and local phone are also available.

  • Mafalda was a wonderful host. She waited for me outside the metro, even when I was delayed by one hour with no way of contacting her, and she was very gracious about it. During my stay she checked in with me to see if there was anything I needed, and answered my many questions.

The apartment is very nice and exactly as described, and I was very comfortable in the bed. I must report a couple things: first, the bathroom smelled bad. Airing out the apartment by opening the window helped, but the smell was back by the end of the day. Also, while the street is thankfully without traffic noise (too narrow for cars), there is a fair amount of noise from kids playing, dogs barking, babies crying, upstairs neighbor singing along to her radio. I slept perfectly well at night, however, and the "realness" of the neighborhood was in the end a net positive.

There are many local restaurants on the next street, which were full of Portuguese people, as well as a few tourists, and served good food at incredibly affordable prices.

It was a very short walk to Rossio, and an easy 15 minute walk to Barrio Alto. The neighborhood seems to be made up mostly of immigrants; to me, it was a wonderful way to feel like part of the city.

    I would stay there again.

Hello Ben! Thanks for your comment! Pointing the bad things is as important as pointing the good ones. Actually, more important because it allows hosts to improve their flats :) So, double thanks to you!

  • The appartment met our expectations: clean, nice decorations, small but comfortable: it´s perfect for a couple.
Mafalda is very nice and kind, it was a pleasure meeting her.
The neighbourhood is picturesque but central. It´s a walking distance away from the main tourist attractions.
We enjoyed our stay here and truly recommend it!

  • My boyfriend and I spent 6 nights in this wonderful estudio. The host is great, always answered promptly and treated us fantasticly (her basket of organic veggies and fruits is a must!). The studio is small but cozy and has everything you could need to live in it. It is a well located area, close to mostly everything you need to see. We had a wonderful time! Thanks again Mafalda! :)

  • It was a pleasure to stay at Mafalda's studio, everything is pretty, cosy and clean, and incredibly well equipped - with hairdryer, TV, and even a waffle iron... Mafalda was great and very, helpful and attentive, just made you feel at home at once. When you look out of the window, you're inside Lisbon's heart. The studio is just fine for two people, but you should be physically fit, for the roads of Lisbon are steep, as are the stairs to the studio.... :-) I recommend this place without any reservation.

  • This place is great, I just loved it!!! Very well located in a typical portuguese neighbourhood. There are guesthouses in the area but it's not touristic. The shopping area, restaurants, bars and metro are close by, minimarkts can be found just around the corner. Within 10 min. you can walk down to the waterfront which can also be seen in the distance from the appartment. Everything of downtown Lisbon can be reached on foot. The train station to Sintra is around the corner. Coming to the appartment by metro you will have to walk a little bit uphill and climb some stairs but its no big deal. The appartment is bright and very cute. It's decorated with lovely details and offers everything needed (even a hairdryer and cable TV). The kitchen ist fully equipped with a a small seating area. The bedroom also offers a sofa and a small cupboard. The appartment is small but big enough for 2 people. It's very clean and homey. Even though I didn't meet Mafalda, communication with her was very quick and she was very helpful as well as her mother was.

About
I am a curious person. This means that sometimes I might take time to answer as I might be exploring some new place, on the road to somewhere. I love Mother Earth and love to be around those who respect and protect it. I love art (all forms of), smiley and easy-going people, cats, dogs, good vegetarian organic food... :) Please, be aware and conscious over your wastes and consumption options. Try to be as much ecological as you can. Don't shower/ brush teeth with uninterrupted running water. Use as less as possible plastic packages. Bring you own water bottle. Eat organic (preferably from a Permaculture farm) and local (baskets available on demand). Don't waste food, buy/cook just what you can eat. Use organic shampoos and soaps. Enjoy and be happy!!! Life is beautiful :)
