Suzie always gave us a beautiful smile. The house is decorated lovely, with warm paintings, fine china, great colors. We loved the fully functional kitchen. And it has the perfect location, minutes walk to Waikiki beach and not far from the Diamond Head. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly. We really enjoyed our stay!
"Super Quiet Cottage" is an accurate description. Suzie's cottage is located in quaint little neighborhood nestled between Waikiki and Diamond head away from tourists but close enough to be one yourself. Suzie was polite and professional and Ruby (her dog) is adorable....one of my daughter's favorite parts of our trip. If you chose to stay here, I recommend you check out Happy Valley Pasta, Pioneer Saloon, and Bogart's (for breakfast)...the local food shops are amazing. Not to mention the Saturday Farmers Market up hill at the Community Center. Thanks Suzie for making us feel at home! :)
The house is amazingly airy, clean and pleasant feeling. The little yard out front was magical and fun for the kids to play in. The house felt safe and had all the amenities we needed. Suzie was very friendly and helpful.
There are only two things that I would clarify from the website.
1. She definitely loves kids and played with mine, but the neighborhood is not the best for kids under 9. The plus is that it is a super quiet neighborhood, but the con is that kids that like to talk over a quiet indoor voice are not ideal. Having a four year old and two year old made meeting this requirement (and it is a requirement) challenging. When she mentions being quiet on her site, she really means it.
2. The grassy yard shown in the pictures is for a back studio of hers. I didn't realize this. It wasn't a problem, but I was slightly sad to not be able to do the sun-bathing and grass playing I thought was advertised.
Overall, a beautiful place, close to the beach and zoo (15 minute walk), but not for young kids (or loud groups :).
Aloha Shayna, The common areas, like the pathways and the gardens are shared just like it says on the site. Keeping young children quiet is hardly enforceable therefore it is not a requirement, as demonstrated by your visit. The neighborhood lived through it and only one complained but mostly only about the early morning action. Thank you for loving the house and the large loft full of childrens books. Aloha Suzie
We enjoyed our stay very much. The house was larger than we expected and very pretty. Beautiful gardens around the house and also comfortable bed and furnishings. Close to many great places to eat that are easy walking distance. We also walked to the beach from this cottage. Suzie was a very nice and accommodating host. Street parking at this location only, but we never had to park too far away from the cottage. Overall very beautiful experience and we were happy to stay here.
Our stay at the Super Quiet Cottage was interesting to say the least.
-Amazing location as it was close to one of the best beaches we visited in Honolulu. Walking distance to the Diamond head crater, Waikiki, as well as some great local cafes and food stops.
-Great size kitchen if you're looking to cook
-The place was very clean, especially considering it was an older house.
The not so good:
-Despite being listed as "The Entire Place" on AirBnB, the host was present, living in a tent in the backyard during our stay. I know some people book shared accommodations but that's not what we were looking for and there was definitely a loss of privacy in this regard. This listing should be revised to reflect this, because it is misleading.
-There are currently no curtains in the bathroom window which faces out to the backyard. So while getting in and out of the shower, we were entirely visible to the host in the backyard. This was an issue in one instance where Suzie had guests over in the backyard who had a full view of my girlfriend naked leaving the shower.
-The only lock for the whole place is a simple door handle lock on the front door. Did not feel like a very secure apartment if someone wanted to break in.
The downright strange:
-Upon checking out we were immediately met with a barrage of texts and emails, claiming the toilet was broken and that towels had been taken. Had we known during our stay that we would have these issues we would have taken photo and video evidence of a) how the water-flow in the toilet worked from the first day we arrived and b) the location of the towels when we left.
-After maybe 30+ messages over a week following when we left Honolulu, the host requested $35,000 in damages from me. This required us to get in contact with AirBnB's head office, a headache to say the least. But the AirBnB team has been very helpful in this regard.
Overall, it was a good sized house, in a good location if you want a place a little further away from the commercialness of Waikiki. If you're comfortable with shared accommodations, and having the host check in on you, you probably won't have the same issues we had.
Brian I had to check up on you because of the toilet. You kept dropping the toilet seat and constantly taking the back off and flushing it . We could hear you talking about in the back house and in the next door house. It cost 350.00 to call Roto Rooter come and snake some sanitary products out of the toilet. I wish you had communicated so I could have fixed it right away. The property has two houses on it and the neighborhood houses are close. The shower has a shower curtain that you pull and the is a large green drape over the window. The window is so elevated no one can see in? All you see is the sky and the birds nest. . The back yard has a Gazebo but nobody lives in it. I was in the back house and could hear you fighting with the toilet. You said everything was alright.
Wonderful home in a wonderful locale. Beautiful kitchen and yard. Listing is accurate. Suzie is very nice and welcoming.
Neighborhood is very walkable with great Waikiki access and nearby restaurants.
This house was great for us with a baby who had to put her down early and stay quiet afterwards.
We had a great stay at Suzies' cottage. Very quiet neighbourhood, within walking distance from Waikiki. Spacious enough for three people but the bed for the third person is so so.
If part of the idea with renting a house is to cook some meals at home, you should know that you have to go three miles to pick up groceries.
There are two large cutting boards above the microwave. Wish you had text me I could have told you immediately instead of you going without. I pride myself on the kitchen having everything even a thing that makes edible roses out of carrots. One block over is a Kaimana Pantry and they have groceries. But the big Safeway is three miles up on Kapahulu.
