Cape Town is a phenomenal city surrounded by pristine landscapes. Set on the quaint West Coast where the waters are warm, this classic original house (renovated and decorated) can be your home base for exploring everything the Cape has to offer.
This home is a restored original Cape Town home in St. James suburb. It is tastefully decorated with fine artwork and antiques and fully equipped for up to 7 people. There are 2 bathrooms and a guest toilet. 3 bedrooms. A lounge with TV and a well equipped kitchen. There is also a laundry and dining room. Excellent proximity to the sea (with views) on the St. James side of the Cape point. 20 mins drive to downtown Cape Town.
Guests have sole access to the entire house along with its garden and off-road parking. Nothing is off limits apart from the owner's store of personal belonging in the store room.
Interaction with Guests
Guest-host interaction is minimal. I never meet guests in person. The caretaker, Gift, will meet you on the day to hand over the keys as well as every day thereafter to service the house.
St. James, and the neighbouring Kalk Bay and Muizenberg are undoubtedly the most quaint and artsy districts in of Cape Town. Guests can experience great dining at nearby resaturants; fresh bread from either of two bakeries in Muizenberg and fresh fish from Kalk Bay or Lakeside (in the Woolworths centre).
Unfortunately there is little public transport to and from St James. The train is not recommended. However Uber is inexpensive in South Africa - a great alternative! I recommend hiring a car from Avis at about R200/day.
Other Things to Note
There is one parking bay (uncovered) off the street as well as multiple parking spots alongside the street.
Please take care of the house and its contents and be polite to the caretaker - his name is Gift.
Michael's home in St. James is truly a gem. It is an absolutely gorgeous property on a hill side slightly above the water right near the wonderful town of Kalk Bay. The house was beautifully decorated and the property is clearly meticulously maintained and care for by the owners. The place looks exactly as it does in the posted photos (which are stunning). Additionally, Michael is a tremendously gracious and easily accessible host - we never met him face-to-face, but he was readily available via email and SMS at any time. Finally, the property's caretaker, Gift, was there to greet us and show us the ropes. He is a very nice and extremely helpful person and we enjoyed chatting with him. I highly recommend Michael's home as a wonderful vacation spot and will hopefully return in the future.
We loved staying in this beautiful house where so much care has been put into every detail. The view from the house is stunning and the sound of the ocean is present in every room. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking just about anything. The main road is busy, mostly due to ongoing road works. You can't hear or see it from the house but walking to Kalk Bay is a bit hectic. There is however a smaller path on the beach that stretches all the way from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay. The beach is lovely with two tidal pools nearby. The host. Michel, was great to deal with and easy to reach both before and during our stay. Gift, the caretaker did a fantastic job, making us feel welcome and well taken care of throughout our stay. We'd love to come back!
This is a fantastic home set back from the busy main road but close enough to the water that you can hear the waves if you leave the doors open at night. Views from the top floor balcony are exceptional.
We enjoyed having our breakfast on the front verandah and the sheltered/private garden area was a favorite for an afternoon cup of tea or a beer.
The furnishings are wonderful and a real step up from what you would normally find in a holiday home.
The caretaker is a friendly and very helpful man who spends a few hour each day at the house cleaning and making sure that all is in order.
The beaches are easily accessible and the walk into the Kalk Bay shopping area takes about 15 minutes.
Whilst we did not find this to be a real issue, mobile and internet coverage is intermittent.
The host was pleasant to deal with and made our settling in very quick and easy.
Overall a great stay and we will be looking to re-book again at some stage in the future.
Our stay in Michael's lovely home in St. James was truly one of the highlights of our trip to South Africa. Glorious views, extreme comfort and proximity to great beaches, hikes, and restaurants close by in addition to the hospitality of Michael, his family and their local caretaker made it very special. Our questions were answered easily despite the family not living onsite. My concerns over safety, noise from the local railway and heat were totally unfounded. We loved "living local" and exploring the Cape area. Hanging out in the garden or on the balcony, and sleeping with doors open to the sound of the waves are wonderful memories. We would go back in a heart beat!
I am a young professional working in South Africa. I have places for you to stay in Cape Town, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Malta. Each is very different and comes at a different price. Should you want to know more about me or about South Africa or Malta, send me a message.
