About this listing
This room is all about comfort, convenience and location at a low price. It has a shelving, a comfy chair, and twin bed. The breeze is very nice up here on the top floor. Soji means: A brief period of mindful work; temple cleaning. And this room is perfect for just that!
This private, single bedroom in our home is dedicated to savvy travelers like you. It has a twin bed, some useful shelving, a breezy window, and a chair. The room is perfect for someone who needs a bed to sleep in, but wants to visit the city on a smaller budget.
The shared kitchenette includes a cook top, microwave, waffle iron, a blender, coffee maker and a shared Mini Fridge. We offer a personal, in-house laundry service for $5 a load, (a load is enough to fill a pillowcase).
Interaction with guests
On the day of your arrival, you will receive an entry code combination to the front door, and detailed check-in instructions when the room is ready. Typically, check in is anytime after 5:00PM but we will do our best to check you in earlier if you request it. There is no space for storing bags, so we cannot hold your bags while you are seeing the town. I recommend leaving your bags at a hotel concierge until you're ready to check in. Unfortunately, we just have no room to store them before your room is ready.
Please send all communications via airbnb site so that I can know who you are and which room you're in when we’re communicating. After arriving, if you need more immediate assistance, you can call or text the House Manager, whose number will be provided after your arrival.
Bronzeville is a mecca of African-American History on Chicago's South Side, just miles south of downtown. Gwendolyn Brooks published poetry in the Chicago Defender, Andrew Rube Foster created Negro League Baseball, and Louis Armstrong kept his trumpet singing at the Sunset Cafe to keep Al Capone off his back.
Long in disrepair, the neighborhood is coming back, with new residents refurbishing historic homes, and with new dining and nightlife scenes beginning to take root. Bronzeville was the site of Chicago's version of the Harlem Renaissance, and was home to many famous African-Americans, including Gwendolyn Brooks, Richard Wright, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Coleman, Ida B Wells, Andrew Foster, and many more. The neighborhood was from the 1920s to the 1940s one of the premiere centers of African-American culture and was fairly affluent and middle class.
Today, the neighborhood is seeing major community-driven revitalization efforts, mostly by wealthy and entrepreneurial African-Americans who value the neighborhood's historic importance. Martin Luther King's favorite diner, Jesse Owens' gravestone, Harold Washington's old house, and the Obama's wedding reception hall are all here, as are some incredible blues clubs.
Our house, Zen Mansion, is in a location very convenient to the city's center. The neighborhood is safe and quiet, due to the relatively low population density of the district, with the nearest police station only 2 blocks away.
