We think Bovina is the 'gem of the Catskills' and this catbird seat above Brushland Eating House is just the place to take it in. Smack dab in the middle of main street, you've access to the towns bounty - farms, mountains & delicious fare.
If bucolic is what you’re after, Bovina is your haven. Our little hamlet is connected to the Catskills by miles of winding country roads that lead past grazing cattle, ski mountains (only 40 min from Belleayre and an hour from Plattekille), wildflower fields and century-old barns. Just about two and half hours Northwest of the Five Boroughs you could be here by lunchtime - which in these parts, consists of a cherry soda, trout spread and a dip in the lake.
Spacious yet cozy, the apartment has welcomed writers, lovebirds, next-door neighbors and wedding guests alike. Lofted ceilings sport rustic wooden beams and let all of that mountain breeze in through big wooden windows. A generously-sized kitchen boasts butcher block countertops and ample cabinet space, but don’t worry if your knife skills are a little rusty - just give a whistle and we’ll save you a seat downstairs in the dining room. And whether you’ve come alone on sabbatical or travel in a pack, two large, thoughtfully appointed bedrooms and a bath & a half provide comfortable sleeping and bathing quarters. Design books, classic novels, board games and a radio stock the shelves for lazy afternoon or post-hike relaxing.
Bovina is chock-full of agriculture - dairy, veggie, beef and poultry farms, as well as producers of maple syrup & honey. Take a hike to forage wild edibles, pick a few wildflowers, dip your toes in the stream or watch the world go by on the second-floor porch.
Bovina Center is easily accessed by foot (it's only about ten city blocks) but the rest of Delaware County is best explored by car.
The entire experience was excellent, the apartment is very spacious, and the food in the restaurant is not only very good, but reasonably priced. Bonus: Sara and Sohail are incredibly friendly, and when we experienced some unexpected car trouble, let us stay warm in the restaurant downstairs during non-business hours, and provided us with coffee, cordial conversation, and the generous use of their land line to make arrangements (reliable cell signals throughout the Catskills exist only the forms of wishes and dreams). I would recommend the apartment and restaurant to anyone without hesitation, and we will most certainly be visiting again.
Brushland is perfect in every way. I had a group of seven who wanted to escape NYC for a weekend, and this place was such a hidden gem. The living accommodations exceeded my expectations. It was beautifully decorated and in pristine condition when we showed up. Sohail is awesome, and makes sure to help out if/when we needed anything at all. The town itself is pretty quiet, but all you need is the outdoors and the amazing food served downstairs at their restaurant. I can't wait to plan more trips back to Bovina. I recommend this place a million times over!
My boyfriend and I had an excellent stay at Above Brushland. The apartment is charming and spacious - more than enough room for two! We wanted a quiet getaway from the city and Bovina provided just that. It was an exceptionally cold weekend when we visited so we didn't get outside much, but we enjoyed the picturesque views of Bovina's snowy main street and driving through the nearby snow-covered countryside.
We were warmly welcomed after a snowy drive and had a delicious meal at the restaurant our first night (definitely recommend the pork schnitzel!). The apartment has a big kitchen that's suited for eating in as well.
You can hear noise from the restaurant upstairs but we didn't find it all that disruptive. The restaurant closes by 10 or 11 so it didn't impact our sleep.
Overall, a great experience for two city dwellers who weren't quite ready to give up all their creature comforts for a weekend in the country. Hopefully we can return when it's warmer and explore the area more!
We had an amazing time staying in Bovina Center above Brushland. The space was huge, clean, bright, beautiful, warm, and cozy - and was way above our expectations. Sohail and Sarah were extremely nice and made us feel very comfortable and very welcome. Additionally, Brushland is a terrific restaurant (I would argue the best in the area). It was wonderful to enjoy the quiet peacefulness of the area, the snow and the clean air - and be able to come downstairs for great drinks and one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. Perfect trip!
We loved our time in Bovina!
We were warmly welcomed after a snowy drive to Brushland Eating House, where we had dinner. Our meal was so delicious - roasted carrots and pork schnitzel were among our favorite dishes.
Sara and Sohail were amazing hosts. The light-filled apartment is totally spacious, super clean and welcoming. Exposed beams, a deck of cards, art books, functional kitchen...Next time we will stay longer + bring friends.
Above Brushland is wonderful if only for the restaurant below. Sohail and Sara have created an idyllic eating experience, with a warm ambiance and simple, high-quality food. The apartment itself is spacious and bright; it is well represented in the pictures. We came at a particularly hectic time, just before their New Year's event, so did not communicate much with Sara and Sohail during our stay, but we knew they were available if we needed anything.
A couple of points to note. First, as another reviewer has mentioned, the sound really carries from the restaurant, so it may not be the ideal place to while away evening hours. Second, but this applies to much of the region, those on AT&T should not expect cell service.
Neither of these issues was too significant for us, as the restaurant was only open for one of the three nights we were there, and we ended up exploring nearby. Overall, a great place to stay--especially for the price.
