About This Listing
We think Bovina is the 'gem of the Catskills' and this catbird seat above Brushland Eating House is just the place to take it in. Smack dab in the middle of main street, you've access to the towns bounty - farms, mountains & delicious fare.
If bucolic is what you’re after, Bovina is your haven. Our little hamlet is connected to the Catskills by miles of winding country roads that lead past grazing cattle, ski mountains (only 40 min from Belleayre and an hour from Plattekille), wildflower fields and century-old barns. Just about two and half hours Northwest of the Five Boroughs you could be here by lunchtime - which in these parts, consists of a cherry soda, trout spread and a dip in the lake.
Spacious yet cozy, the apartment has welcomed writers, lovebirds, next-door neighbors and wedding guests alike. Lofted ceilings sport rustic wooden beams and let all of that mountain breeze in through big wooden windows. A generously-sized kitchen boasts butcher block countertops and ample cabinet space, but don’t worry if your knife skills are a little rusty - just give a whistle and we’ll save you a seat downstairs in the dining room. And whether you’ve come alone on sabbatical or travel in a pack, two large, thoughtfully appointed bedrooms and a bath & a half provide comfortable sleeping and bathing quarters. Design books, classic novels, board games and a radio stock the shelves for lazy afternoon or post-hike relaxing.
Bovina is chock-full of agriculture - dairy, veggie, beef and poultry farms, as well as producers of maple syrup & honey. Take a hike to forage wild edibles, pick a few wildflowers, dip your toes in the stream or watch the world go by on the second-floor porch.
Bovina Center is easily accessed by foot (it's only about ten city blocks) but the rest of Delaware County is best explored by car.
We have stayed at Sarah and Sohail's Brushlands apartment many times, and every time it has been a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable experience. Not only is the two floor, two bedroom apt spotless and spacious, but also it is beautifully decorated to make you feel like you are at home. The cozy comfort of Brushlands can be attributed partly to the decor, but more so to the owners, whose friendly hospitality and fastidiousness guarantee a carefree stay. And it gets better.... The restaurant downstairs (which is always bustling) serves food that rivals fine dinning in the city, and the Pork Schnitzel is to die for. The happy couple also operate the restaurant, with SoHail as (genius) chef in the kitchen, creating new dishes based on local, seasonal produce; and Sarah on the floor gracefully floating about replenishing wine and eliciting smiles. This establishment has it all- peaceful quietude upstairs and a sceney buzz downstairs, with the picturesque Catskills as a backdrop. Doesn't get better than this.
A very sweet place to stay in bucolic downtown Bovina Center. We especially appreciated being right upstairs from the best restaurant around. And our dog like the big field out back. It's a big, airy apartment. There were only two of us (plus dog) but it could have comfortably accommodated four. Ed liked the stack of 1980s Playboy Magazines and I enjoyed the farming mags. (The decor is a little rustic. Maybe not the place for Martha Stewart fans.)
Gorgeous space, delicious food downstairs, and an idyllic, bucolic town. This was our second time here for a month -- it's a perfect place to stay!
Staying upstairs from Brushland is fantastic, and when a pink full moon is rising over the hills, the fairy tale is complete. Don't miss the roasted carrots – or the pork schnitzel!
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time staying here. Sohail and Sarah are wonderful, friendly hosts, the apartment was gorgeous, and the restaurant was outstanding. We had a relaxing, and enjoyable time. Very highly recommended.
The entire experience was excellent, the apartment is very spacious, and the food in the restaurant is not only very good, but reasonably priced. Bonus: Sara and Sohail are incredibly friendly, and when we experienced some unexpected car trouble, let us stay warm in the restaurant downstairs during non-business hours, and provided us with coffee, cordial conversation, and the generous use of their land line to make arrangements (reliable cell signals throughout the Catskills exist only the forms of wishes and dreams). I would recommend the apartment and restaurant to anyone without hesitation, and we will most certainly be visiting again.
Brushland is perfect in every way. I had a group of seven who wanted to escape NYC for a weekend, and this place was such a hidden gem. The living accommodations exceeded my expectations. It was beautifully decorated and in pristine condition when we showed up. Sohail is awesome, and makes sure to help out if/when we needed anything at all. The town itself is pretty quiet, but all you need is the outdoors and the amazing food served downstairs at their restaurant. I can't wait to plan more trips back to Bovina. I recommend this place a million times over!
About the Host, Sohail
My girlfriend Sara and I fell in love with Bovina using AirBnB and we now live/work here full time, so be forewarned.. the Bovina "bug" is a real thing.
