Welcome to our home! Your space is a lovely finished basement, with private room and en suite bathroom. You also have living room, kitchen bar, and laundry room all to yourself. This area has a private entrance but is not a complete apartment – the “kitchen” area is limited to a small mini-fridge, microwave, coffee pot, and electric water kettle. We try to incorporate sustainable features such as organic sheets, dual flush toilets, and the option to compost and recycle while you are here.
Neighborhood: We live in the awesome Irvington neighborhood! We are centrally located, offering convenient access to the airport and downtown Portland, Hawthorne, Laurelhurst, the microbrew district, Mississippi, and Alberta. We are just a few blocks from Broadway, where you will find lots of great restaurants and shops within walking distance. Almost every kind of food you could want within a few blocks: bar food, vegan raw food, mexican, thai, ethiopian, etc, as well as several coffee shops. It’s also close to a Safeway for whatever basic stuff you need, and the Lloyd Center shopping mall.
We are vegetarians, outdoor enthusiasts, and lovers of local Portland culture. We can provide the best recommendations for vegan and vegetarian food, getting around the city without a car, spending time outdoors, and great spots for classic Northwest beer. We also have games, movies, and books for you if you want to have a quiet evening in.
We include parking, wireless internet, towels, sheets, blankets, shampoo, conditioner, soap, dishes, coffee, and tea. Need something else? Just ask! We do our best to make your stay comfortable.
We have a dog and a cat in the house, but they do not go in the basement. If you are highly allergic, this place probably won’t work for you. Contact us for our pet policy.
A couple of other notes about the space: as it is a finished basement, the ceilings are a little low (6'6"). Mark is 6 feet tall and is perfectly comfortable in the guest space, but a couple of doorways are only about 70 inches high. If you're very tall, you may not be comfortable here. Also, the furnace is audible from the guest bedroom and a few of our guests are bothered by the noise at night.
Mostly, we just expect you to respect us and our home. The only hard and fast rule we have is no smoking.
Although we have marked reservations as flexible check-in and check-out, we generally anticipate check-ins around as early as 4pm and check-outs as late as 11am. This gives us the time we need to prepare the space in between guests. It is no problem is you plan to arrive later or check-out earlier. However, please don't hesitate to ask if you want an early check-in or a late check-out! If we can accommodate it, we absolutely will - but understand that if we have another guest that day, it may not be possible. We are always happy to hold bags for you if that would help.
Our stay was fantastic. The apartment is very nicely furnished, clean, comfortable and inviting. It was perfect for our visit to Portland. Ann and Mark were very attentive hosts and readily accessible for any concerns or questions. We highly recommend their place.
We felt welcomed the moment we found Ann's home. On a dark December evening, we were greeted by bright and cheerful holiday lighting decorating their home. After some initial trouble with the combination door lock of the lower suite, we rang the bell of the host's residence and she promptly answered and assisted us with it. There were no further problems once we understood how it worked.
I am not going to repeat other reviews of how clean, spacious and well furnished the rental is, but we were still amazed by how much room we had to spread out. It is also very well situated to the commercial area along NE Broadway and along a major bus route with frequent service to downtown.
I do want to note a couple of things special about this rental:
1) It is very well lit, which avoided the cave like feeling that some basement units have if they are too dark;
2) It has plenty of electrical outlets for charging your gear. We have been in other rentals where we've had to purchase outlet strips so we didn't have to unplug lights to get things charged.
We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to friends.
Ann and Mark were amazing! They were very detailed in all aspects of making our stay pleasant. The location is amazing, and the space inside (especially the bathroom) was clean and welcoming. Thank you!
Fantastic place! The bed was comfy, nice having the rooms separated by doors when we weren't on the same sleep schedule. While we initially weren't planning on using the washer and dryer, after getting drenched by rain and snow, it was very nice to have them available to wash and dry our clothing. We made use of the coffee pot, mini fridge, and electric tea kettle. They also have a microwave available.
Not that this would pertain to most people, but the ceilings for majority the basement apartment(so, to be expected?) are somewhat low- around 6'6-7", I only mention this because my fiance is 6'8 and so he was uncomfortable having to duck while we were staying there. I had to duck to go into the bathroom from the bedroom (due to the bulkheads) where the doors are just under 6 feet tall, but no big deal!
Great location, within blocks to numerous bars and cafes(we went to the Swift and McMenamin's and there is a Pete's and Starbucks w/in 3 blocks), and walked to the arena for a hockey game.
While we didn't need to talk with the hosts or end up seeing them due to our busy schedule, Ann was available if we needed and provided very clear instructions making arrival and departure very easy.
The couch seems comfortable enough that someone could sleep on it as well. I am looking forward to my next trip to Portland and would definitely come back again if I was traveling solo or with a shorter person :D .
I stayed at the Spacious Irvington Retreat for 5 days in November for a conference. Overall I had a great time there and really like the place. This was my first Airbnb experience and this place was so much better than a hotel. As other reviewers have said, it is a lot more roomy than in looks in the pictures. We used the bed and the fold-out couch. Both had super-comfortable memory-foam mattresses. Everything was spotless when we arrived, and it is very tastefully decorated.
I really liked the location - it was a 17 minute walk to the Oregon Convention Center, and there is a bus stop a block away as well. It was also right down the street from some bars, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Anne was awesome about everything. I unfortunately did not get a chance to meet her, but before we arrived, she really went out of her way to recommend some great nearby restaurants.
A couple things to keep in mind about this place - it is a basement apartment so you can hear footsteps from above. However the noise was minor and everything was quiet during sleep-hours. Also, the furnace and hot water heater are down in the basement, so they make some noise when they go on. Personally, I wasn't bothered by either of these things, but if you are very sensitive to noise or looking for something to be bothered about you might find it an issue. Some reviewers have complained about low ceilings; my friend who is around 6'1" had plenty of room, but he had to stoop to get into the bathroom.
Overall we had a great experience and I would definitely recommend this place to friends or family who are going to Portland.
I would definitely recommend this place and stay here again if I'm back in Portland! This is a beautiful and very clean space with plenty of room and a great location. There were even helpful recommendations about where to eat and drink and do yoga nearby as well as a number of local and regional guide books. Ann and Mark are great and always were quick to respond and helpful. The only downside I noticed was some noise from the furnace when it cut on, but Mark & Ann were willing to adjust it if it was a problem, and it didn't bother me much.
We arrived at check in and were promptly greeted by Mark. Unfortunately, we did not meet Ann during our stay, but Mark was always available and very happy to help us out and offer suggestions during our stay. Their place is in a lovely part of Portland close to some good restaurants and easy to commute to and from by bike/bus/walking. Overall, incredibly welcoming, friendly and clean - would highly recommend to anyone.
We moved to Portland a year ago, returning to Oregon after a stint in the midwest. We're thrilled to be back in the northwest enjoying trees, mountain views, hiking, mild summers, sweet rain, and local breweries. We used to live in Eugene, but before that Mark lived in Washington and Ann lived in Missouri. We love to travel - Mark spent a summer backpacking through Europe and Ann spent several months living in Australia. We want to return to these places together, but have many other places on our travel wish list!
Ann is primarily who you will communicate with through airbnb. As hosts, we pride ourselves on offering an affordable, super clean, neighborhood-based option for Portland's travelers. We are very responsive to guest questions and needs - we love to give recommendations, help using the public transit, etc - but we try to stay out of the way until you ask, so we don't interfere with you trip!
