The Space

Our dorm loft (aka the "Hippie Pad") is a unique sleeping accommodation offering a bohemian yet cozy private living space with a wealth of outdoor activities and world class amenities at your doorstep. Separate from our house, this 800 sq foot sleeping loft offers 4 double beds in two bedrooms and a day bed that can accommodate 2 people. (we only book one visiting party at a time in the dorm/loft). Living and kitchenette area with microwave, small refrigerator, coffee maker, coffee & tea supplies for morning, toaster, some kitchen utensils and a small room with a camping style port-a-potty. FULL BATH IN MAIN HOUSE is for showering and any other bathroom needs you may have during your stay. We supply a variety of bathroom toiletries and lots of clean towels We have a list of excellent restaurants, map of the town and surrounding area, attraction brochures and hiking books to browse through. After a long day cuddle up with popcorn and watch a variety of classic movies we have available. We are located two miles from the Olympic Village of Lake Placid and just around the corner from the Northville Lake Placid hiking trail and the Chubb River put-in.

If you are a party of two booking the dorm/loft we may have an additional 2 guests in the main house sharing the bath. The bath in the house will be private with groups of 4 or more booking the dorm/loft.

WiFi for computer and DVD - VCR monitor with lots of classic movies for the whole family. Relaxing deck with picnic table, Kitchen in the house and BBQ available for cooking. Off street parking and storage space for bikes, canoes and other outdoor equipment. We are also dog friendly and have a spacious yard for your 4 legged buddy. This dorm style accommodation is perfect for groups and families. We enjoy hosting our guests and consider it a privilege to share our knowledge of this beautiful corner of the world.

Guest Access

The dorm/ loft is private to the group renting. Your full bath is in the house and you will have access 24/7. It has lots of towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner & other toiletries. If you need to do some cooking, our kitchen in the house is fully equipped a your welcome to use your cooking talents. An outdoor BBQ is ready to be fired up and you are can dine on our outdoor deck.

Interaction with Guests

We always like to greet our guests and give them the ins and outs of their space. If for some reason we can't be home the door is unlocked and you can make yourself at home until we get back. We love to have conversation and get to know our guests. We also respect peoples privacy and have no problem with that. We are very easy going and want your experience to be exactly what you came to Lake Placid for.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is very safe and quiet. It is residential with lots of space and trees between homes. Many guests comment on the fact that they were surprised at how quiet it was. I am an avid gardener and have beautiful flower beds and boxes providing candy for the eyes.

Getting around

We are 2 miles outside of the Olympic Village. To get around the area it is best to have a vehicle, but we have had guests who did not have one. Cabs are available and several places in town rent bicycles. Their is a bus that comes to the area and a train that comes to Westport. If you use the train, a shuttle will bring you to town.

Other Things to Note

The Dorm/Loft is a unique situation. The guest bath in the house is for use of guests in the dorm loft. As far as a toilet in the dorm/loft, I would best describe it as an OUTDOOR CAMPING TOILET. Best to be used for night time emergencies. House bathroom is always open and available 24/7.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • A great location in a very comfortable attic/loft. Lake Placid is well worth a visit with fantastic treks and climbs nearby.

  • Leslie and Charles are awesome. Very enjoy the two days living with you. Thanks a lot!

  • Leslie and Charles were excellent hosts. I just LOVED their dog Darwin as well. The dorm was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The drive into town was very short and not a problem at all. The bathroom in the main house was easy to get to and provided the much needed shower after a muddy hike. Overall, the pet friendly Unique Dorm provided myself and 5 friends with a relaxing, care-free weekend that I miss already. Thank you Leslie, Charles and Darwin!

  • Leslie and Charles were great hosts who welcomed us into the home like family. There were some flies in the loft (which apparently was a problem in several parts of Lake Placid that weekend), but they moved us to a king bed in their home so it worked out perfectly. We'd definitely recommend it... and be ready to meet the darling beagle Darwin!

    Response from Leslie:

We were really glad we had a room in the house for you and enjoyed our conversations and getting to know you better. The fly anomaly was caused from summer like temperatures and sun. The good news is it made for a great fall weekend for you. Hope you can vist again in the future.

  • Leslie was a great host and very accomodating.

I was in the area for business and she was always helpful with recommendations during my stay.

It was great to stay in a home and take a break from the hotel/motel hopping.

  • Leslie and her husband were very welcoming and friendly! They provided us with a very helpful map and information regarding the restaurants in the village. The apartment was adorable, very unique and roomy!! We would definitly stay here again, our experience was awesome. The apartment did not have heat so it was quite cold in there at night but Leslie was so generous and offered us the guest bedroom in the house to sleep in as well as full access to the guest bathroom in the house. This would defintily be a great place to stay in the warmer months!!

  • Had a lovely stay with Leslie. She was very helpful and enabled us to enjoy the area to the full extent. Leslie recommended great restaurants and we went for a full day of bushwalking which commenced very close their property. We stayed in the loft area. It was cool at night but there were plenty of blankets available. Recommnd it!

  • Leslie and Charles, the hosts are super nice and hospitable, and helpful!
My friend and I had reserved the Dorm Loft, which looked really nice, but when we arrived the weather had turned cold and the loft was freezing, it has no heat source and no doors to any of the rooms, so Leslie offered us the 2 rooms that she rents inside her house. They were clean and comfortable enough. If you are a light sleeper who goes to sleep early, bring ear plugs as the host's television was usually on quite loudly. Ear pugs did the job.
We did not have breakfast there (we don't eat breakfast), so I can't comment on that, but coffee, tea and espresso were generously offered. I do recommend this stay if you do not need a lot of privacy.

  • Central location, comfortable accommodations, relaxed atmosphere and pleasant hosts.
Thank you Leslie and Charles. We had a wonderful time staying with you in Lake Placid. The morning coffee was greatly appreciated and your delicious Ratatouille really hit the spot after a very long hike. Say hello to Darwin for us, he's the best!
    Health and Happiness,
    Veronica Gervase and Kira Sorensen

Semi retired and enjoying all our intrests
I am an avid gardener, both flowers and organic vegetables. I grow most of my vegetables at the Community Garden and some at home. I love to cook and enjoy the flavors of my home grown veggies. I am an emerging artist in print making, studying and practicing at the local BluSeed art Workshop, North Country Community College and Mesa Art Center in Arizona. I have a creative soul and have enjoyed creating the dorm/loft living space. My husband, Charles, is a part time college professor and published writer. Sometimes you can catch him performing his poetry at one of the local venues. We love foraging in the woods for eatable wild mushrooms. Our new avocation is being host of our airbnb guests and sharing our love and knowledge in this beautiful part of the world.
