  • John was a warm and considerate host. Fresh papaya smoothies each morning were well appreciated. The space was ideal for a couple. We didn't spend a lot of time in the apartment but the bed was comfy and everything met our needs.

  • The description and previous reviews describe John's place pretty well but I thought I'd try to help clarify a few points. I think we stayed in the Whale room and it's hard not to be impressed at what you get for your money. Kona's not a cheap place to stay and the huge bed, TV with netflix and (website hidden) (which we didn't try out, c'mon get off the internet, you're in Hawaii!!), wifi, kitchen area and bathroom were more than you'd expect from hotels many times the price. The view from the balcony across the sea is spectacular during sunset or a moonlit night. There was a second bedroom which we weren't expecting which is obviously a little girl's room (sinister barbie doll comes free), and another sofa bed in the main room so you could cram quite a few in here comfortably.

To address some of the concerns of others... the indoor rented area seemed very clean and tidy and had a nice feel to it. As with elsewhere on the island, keep doors closed to keep the beasties out, I saw one gecko in the house which, considering they're everywhere outdoors is pretty darn good.

The shared balcony area is a bit more gritty and those who are accustomed to the glittering interior of a five-star hotel may be traumatized by the appearance of a range of wildlife up to and including the local wild turkeys which popped up on the hunt for insects during our stay. The small kitchen area out here is kindof like mine during University, perfectly serviceable but would probably make my Mom tut a bit. Bear in mind all this stuff is in addition to the kitchen in the apartment and the food is basically complimentary, so don't get too worked up about it. You didn't pay for a five star hotel.

As stated in the description you're roughly a mile horizontally and a good 300 metres vertically from the sea. If you walk it, bring suncream and your own food and drink, you'll be hiking suburban wilderness for a while. When you get close to the water, don't bother turning left as there's mile upon mile of beachfront suburbia with no beach access. Turning right yielded a nice beach park with no refreshments (I burned out at this stage and started the hike back). Basically, cars are the way forward. Kona is a few miles distant, ask John for advice on local shopping as well as places to eat out in Kona. Thanks John, and say hi to the alpha male turkey for me. He's a beast.

  • John (Giovanni) greeted us with his bountiful enthusiasm, luscious fruits, a cold bottle of Pellegrino, and a warning about which spiders we should avoid as we made our way down the overgrown tropical path to our private gecko-friendly area in back. This is a warm, friendly, in touch with nature place if not luxurious, though we were comfortable, it was well stocked, and has a great bed! For greater privacy we recommend the back room (turquoise paint) which butted up against a hill with lava rock wall, orchid, and a gorgeous tree -- very quiet and peaceful, I slept great here!! We got the baby geckos to lick our fingertips, so cute!! Thanks again, John!

  • Overall we had pretty nice stay at the Jungle Garden studio, but we are pretty laid back in general. If you're looking for the lap of luxury, this may not be your place. It isn't going to match up to a fancy hotel (or even the high end B and Bs on air bnb), but it does have a lot of potential and i get the sense that John is slowly working to make it a better experience over time. Realistically, if you know Kona, the price alone makes this place worth it. You have your own quiet bedroom apartment around the corner from the driveway and it is reasonably supplied (though overall it might be nice to have a little more instruction-maybe even just little a little sign or a welcome instruction sheet- we weren't really sure what was ours to use, which of the cooking appliances were functional, there was coffee in the fridge, but we weren't sure if it was ok to use it, etc.). John supplied nice towels for the beach and for showers, etc. The studio itself is a little sparse but comfortable, and really it's mostly a place to sleep. The bed is cozy. The back porch was a nice place to have breakfast before heading out, make some dinner in the evening, or maybe chill with a drink before bed. This is not the place for you if you'll be freaked out by a free range chicken on the premises or the occasional wild turkey on the way home at night, or some clutter on the walk up to the studio. This is not the place for you if you're expecting typical luxury. But, if you're pretty laid back and understand a little about living in Hawaii, and you're not too picky, it's a fine place to stay for a few nights, it's minutes from the Kona beaches, and it's the right price. John was pretty easy to get in contact with and seemed ready to help with any issues (there were none).

  • While my husband and I had a great time at the Kona Surf Film Festival for 2 nights, John's place was a bit more rustic than we anticipated. The "breakfast" was some stale bread (left unwrapped in the fridge), a few oranges and a small (homegrown) papaya that had started to rot at the top.

    Response from John:

We provide fresh bread the night before or the morning of in a cold frig, so we recommend that they are heated some 5 minutes or more in the oven provided. Our ripe ripened fruit offers a level of ripeness and flavor just not available in stores. The specaility fruit is cosmedically challenged and packaging challenged so along with being ripe can look pretty strange , but can beat out store bought fruit everytime in contests. That is why it can cost 6.50-25 a pound if sold to chefs rather than shared with guests for free.We have many varieties of fruit and the only chance to find them or try them may be with us or other specaility growers.Of course it is always a good idea to let hosts know about your personal preferences for fruit, or needs on your trip especailly if you are staying for a brief time.

  • We had a pretty good time at the jungle garden studio, but it's not exactly luxurious...

On the plus side, John is a welcoming host, he showed us the place, explained the area, and even offered a ride into town on our second day there. He provided dishes, towels, beach towels, coffee, and fruit. That was awesome. As a bonus, we had a bunch of geckos come out to visit us on the porch in the morning.

On the minus side, the garden is a little unkempt and the bathroom is barely separated from the bedroom. Location isn't ideal either, it's a steep 1 miile downhill walk to the beach and the way the roads are in the area, getting to and from the beach by car requires a 4 mile detour.

  • WE had a great stay with GIo. Very reasonably priced considering the time of the Ironman. He brought us fresh fruit from his garden. Lovely view of the ocean. Would definitely stay again

  • John, the owner of the Kona "Jungle Studio" where I stayed for three nights, is a charming and conscientious host. Accommodations were clean, quiet, safe and affordable. I had a view of spectacular Kona sunsets from the deck outside my room, and visits from "buck buck" the chicken, and "black cat." I live on the other side of the island and will very likely visit John again for one of my occasional overnight visits. I also appreciate the fact that John's accommodations are animal friendly. : ) Thanks, John!

About
I am a bit of an eclectic person, I like to do cultural travel, grow tropical exotic fruit, definately into the whole health and wellness thing. I've found that I really enjoy the hosting aspect of having people come into my home and us get to know each other over the course of their stay. Maybe it's the massage therapist in me but I really enjoy the satisfaction that comes with providing a good experience for my guests, be it good advice on what to see and do, brewing fresh coffee in the morning, or having everything clean, ready, and in order when guests arrive. Having traveled a lot myself (staying in everything from hostels and guesthouses to five-star hotels), I know only too well what kinds of things are important to me in a homestay -- conveint location, clean linens, a comfy bed, helpful people that turn me onto the to do's of the place and a hot shower after a long day of traveling or sightseeing. Oh, and a friendly host, of course.. I really, really enjoy living on the Big Island of Hawaii and know it pretty well. I'm amazed every day that a place as special as this exists and that I get to call it home and I'm thrilled when I get to share it with others. Hope to see you soon!
