The space
BEST LOCATION IN KERALA!
Malabar Cove is a perfect hideaway. A river sweeps round into the rocky cove where the Arabian Sea is busy each day with local fishermen in their colourful boats. There is a pretty little beach backed by a rocky hill which years ago used to house a fort.

Within Malabar cove, village life goes on. Fishermen walk down to the sea with their nets, coconuts are harvested and ladies bash their washing on their ‘house rocks’ – guests can do this too – though we do have a laundry service!

At Malabar Cove we are trying to keep a natural environment where guests can explore the little paths of our coconut grove by the beautiful Arabian Sea. The local people live by fishing and harvesting coconuts.

The River House is close to the famous Drive-in Beach of Muzhappilangad. It is possible to quickly reach the Drive-in Beach by walking through the shallow river - approximately knee deep on an adult. Guest can also walk a longer way across a bridge. It is great fun to take a drive along the four kilometre Drive-in Beach, skimming the waves.

The accommodation is simple but comfortable with European style bathrooms and solar water heating. Staff can be hired to help with cooking and shopping (if and when required).

At night the sky is as black as can be and the stars are a magnificent sight.

House layout is as follows:
Enter into the Dining Room.
The small en-suite bedroom is immediately on the left.
Second left is the larger en-suite bedroom.
The Kitchen is directly in front. From the kitchen, a door leads out to a porch with access to a toilet/wash basin - and outside to the coconut grove.

Stairs from the Dining Room lead to an Upper Floor Lounge.
The lounge opens out onto the large roof terrace with superb views over the Arabian Sea and a narrow river as it flows into the sea.

Two other persons can be accommodated in the upper lounge room. Please give notification if required.

The River House is self-catering but staff can be hired to help with cooking and shopping if required.

The kitchen is large but simple. There are cooking rings from bottled gas (supplied) and there is a microwave - which is supposedly top of the range BUT I only ever got the microwave to do basic food warming! - Lynne

Cafes and Hotel Restaurants are a short drive away.

Guest access
At Malabar Cove River House guests have access to:
One twin en-suite room.
One very small en-suite room with bunk beds - suitable for children, though adults are welcome to use this room.
Dining Room
Large Indian style Kitchen
Additional toilet, wash basin
Upper Lounge
Roof terrace
Patio/sit-out
Direct access to coconut grove, beach and river.

Other things to note
North Kerala is still getting used to foreign guests. Therefore it is polite to comply with local attitudes to modesty. Sun bathing on the beaches in skimpy swim wear is not advised. The roof terrace is best for sunning.

Malabar Cove guest accommodation is part of a village. You will see the community going about their everyday life and will probably get invited into their houses which are very simple. All the water comes from wells. It is generally safe but best boiled to avoid upset tummies.

You are also likely to see construction workers, carpenters, the electrician etc.
As well as taking care of their families, the ladies of the village double as labourers. They carry building materials on their heads - from the roadside, along the jungle paths to where the work is taking place. They also collect sand from the beach - for mixing cement. Work can only be carried out when it is not monsoon - the time when guests are usually at Malabar Cove. Guests usually find this fascinating, especially when the local electrician stands in a puddle of water to fix the electric! He is also the plumber.

Internet is not fully functional in this location. Recommend Boom Internet Cafe in nearby Edakkad Village where shops are also available. Walk to Edakkad or take a rickshaw.

Kannur, Kerala, India

Malabar Cove River House is set in a Coconut Grove on the shores of the Arabian Sea.
It is a perfect hideaway.

There are no cars in the village and there is no light pollution, so at night the sky is as black as can be and the stars are a magnificent sight.

Fishermen go down to the sea each day with their nets and colourful boats.
Coconuts are harvested.
Ladies bash their washing on the rocks. Guests can do this too - though we do have a laundry service.

Tours of Kerala can be planned with the help of a driver and maps.
Recommend guests experience a local back-water trip with visit to a Children's School of Kerala Dance and Arts.

A MUST DO: Take a drive on the famous Drive-in Beach of Muzhappilangad. The beach is four kilometres long. It is great fun to drive along, skimming the waves. Sundays can get very busy with Indian people who travel there for a family day out.

This guest accommodation is managed by Mr Suresh Nair, a Keralite family man with schoolteacher wife and two children. He is responsible for the condition of the guest accommodation and the comfort of guests using it. Initial funding came from me Lynne Haywood in UK. It was my dream but I am no longer able to visit Kerala. Therefore, I take no part in the maintenance and administration of the guest accommodation other than via AIRbnb where I can answer any questions you might wish to ask about the accommodation, the surrounding area and generally about India. During my many visits to India, I found it enticing, colourful, noisy, messy yet beautiful, relaxing yet very tiring, exhilarating yet frustrating. It is an experience that always leaves foreign guests with stories to tell back home!
