About this listing
Set in a Coconut Grove, Malabar Cove River House has magnificent views over a narrow shallow river, the Arabian Sea and the famous Drive-in Beach of Muzhappilangad.
A perfect hideaway.
Palm trees and peace!
At Malabar Cove we are trying to keep a natural environment. Guests can see village life and the beautiful Arabian Sea where neighbours take their nets and colourful boats to fish.
There are no cars within a few minutes walk and there is no light pollution so at night the sky is as black as can be and the stars are a magnificent sight.
Malabar Cove River House has private accommodation sleeping up to six persons.
Accommodation is as follows ...
One twin en-suite room.
One very small en-suite room with bunk beds - suitable for two children.
Two other persons can be accommodated in the upper lounge room if required.
A separate toilet/wash room is available on the Ground Floor.
House layout is as follows:
Enter into the Dining Room.
The small bedroom is immediately on the left.
Second left is the larger bedroom.
The Kitchen is directly in front. Through the kitchen a door leads out to a porch with access to a toilet/wash basin - and outside to the coconut grove.
Stairs from the Dining Room lead to an Upper Lounge.
The lounge opens out on to the roof terrace with superb views over the Arabian Sea and a narrow river as it flows into the sea.
The River House is self catering but staff are always available to provide meals to your table if required.
The kitchen is large but simple. There are cooking rings from bottled gas and there is a microwave.
A funny story about the microwave ...
India is 'somewhere else' and an Indian microwave is no exception to the adventure. After a few days of battling with the instructions to this piece of equipment, I sent for the Sales Engineer to demonstrate how to use it. The microwave is top of the range and should do all manner of things. The young man was very pleased to carry out the demonstration which went like this:
Madam, please come. First you must plug it in. Then you put in the food and close the door. My lack of attention caused him to start again - Madam, please come etc. He pressed a few buttons, tried to sell me a cover for it and left.
I only ever got the microwave to do basic food warming!
Cafes and Hotel Restaurants are a short drive away.

There is a pretty little beach backed by a rocky hill which years ago used to house a fort.
Within Malabar cove, village life goes on. Fishermen walk down to the sea with their nets, coconuts are harvested and ladies bash their washing on their ‘house rocks’ – guests can do this too – though we do have a laundry service!

Interaction with Guests
LYNNE IN UK: Guests can ask me questions about Kerala, India, Flights etc. I shall try to answer.
It is unlikely that I shall be in Kerala when guests are staying in the River House.
SURESH IN KERALA: Co-owner Suresh will be readily available if required.
Staff can be available as much or as little as guests require.
Malabar Cove River House is set in a Coconut Grove on the shores of the Arabian Sea.
It is a perfect hideaway.
There are no cars in the village and there is no light pollution, so at night the sky is as black as can be and the stars are a magnificent sight.
In our coconut grove, village life goes on.
Fishermen go down to the sea each day with their nets and colourful boats.
Coconuts are harvested.
Ladies bash their washing on the rocks. Guests can do this too - though we do have a laundry service.
Tours of Kerala can be planned with the help of staff and wall maps.
Recommend guests experience a local back-water trip with visit to a Children's School of Kerala Dance and Arts.
A MUST DO: Take a drive on the famous Drive-in Beach of Muzhappilangad. The beach is four kilometres long. It is great fun to drive along, skimming the waves. Sundays can get very busy with Indian people who travel there for a family day out.
WHEN BOOKING - GUESTS CAN ARRANGE TO BE COLLECTED FROM AIRPORT / RAILWAY STATION ETC
There are no cars in the village. The local people have made steps on the jungle pathways - to prevent motor scooters heading into the Coconut Grove.
From the River House, guests can walk two or three minutes through the Coconut Grove to the nearest road. On reaching the road, there are bus stops - but no buses! However, along the road it is always easy to find an auto-rickshaw or taxi.
Staff at our nearby Beach House can arrange for a local driver with car to collect guests from the road side any time, day or night - for a trip to anywhere in the locality - and beyond!
Other Things to Note
North Kerala is still getting used to foreign guests.
Therefore it is polite to comply with local attitude to modesty.
Sun bathing on the beaches in skimpy swim wear is not advised.
The roof terrace is best for sunning.
Smoking ok - outside.
I never met Lynne but she was more than helpful and helped so much with arrangements. We were met by Suresh and Noushad at the station and they very kindly took us to the house. They offered a menu for food which was very helpful as it's not easy to find food shops or places to eat. They also delivered food to the house. The house is very basic, but then so is the price! there is a lovely beach right outside the door and a pretty small beach a short walk away but sadly you can't swim in either one as they are too dangerous. All in all probably a house for younger travellers who aren't looking for creature comforts.

I have been doing this for about 15 years.
I like to visit India. It can be very tiring and frustrating - but it always calls me back!
The accommodation offered in Kerala is maintained by Mr Suresh Nair. The main tourist season runs from September to May. During June July and August there are dry days while waiting for the monsoon rains. This can mean a severe shortage of water when bookings are not possible - and cancellations can occur.
When the rains come, it can be very exciting and tremendous fun. It can also be somewhat depressing when the humidity even dampens clothes, towels and bedding. Guests should be aware of these things.
Guests must also be aware that Kerala is renowned for its strikes (hartals) which occur at least once a month. During a hartal, not even traffic is allowed on the roads.
Please don't let the above difficulties put you off planning a holiday in Kerala. I am here to help. Kerala is an amazing place and highly recommended!
