This design gem called Agave House is wrapped in windows and skylights. Sunlight is abundant, and guests feel privately perched with a view of mountain ranges, and lush foliage on all sides.
Drenched in sunlight, Agave House is nestled in the most sought after location in the Ojai Valley, the fabled East End. Next door to Beatrice Woods previous home and studio, it is also a short stroll to the Krishnamurti Library, and the historical Thacher school, founded in 1885.
Situated at the base of Horn Canyon ( 5 minutes from town and 20 minutes from the beach ), it has sweeping views of the Ojai mountain range, repleate with low flying hawks, incredible hiking, and a huge private yard, filled with tropical plants, succulents, a Moroccan tile patio with chiminea, and a field of Aloe.
Just up the trail which winds past the house and up over the "Pink Moment" bluffs, resplendent with local flora and fauna, crystal streams, and a natural climbing wall, is a Pilates studio offering world class massage in an outdoor setting.
Natural sage, aloe, and aromatic herbs are right outside your front door, and down the road is an organic Pizza Parlor nestled amongst orange trees, oaks, and more sweeping vistas. The good news is, you are still 1 hour and 15 minutes from Los Angeles and a nice bike ride from town.
The house is restored with birch floors and walls, skylights, mirrors and windows to reflect the outdoors. Downstairs, glass doors open onto the private yard. It offers wifi, dishwasher, flat screen TV, washer/dryer and we can provide in house maid service upon request during your stay. The bathroom features a restored clawfoot tub, birch paneling, a skylight, which is great for star-gazing while soaking in an aromatic bath.
The bedding and mattress match top hotels, for an exquisite sleep beneath another skylight, and one more view of Montana sized stars, clear as diamonds due to the lack of city light.
The concept of the space is to offer a totally serene indoor/outdoor experience with all the luxury of good, comfortable design mixed with a really lovely collection of antiques and art, combined with a high tech environment to cater to those who must work while away from the city.
It is perfect for weekends or for the week to work in nature, near organic cuisine, Whole Foods style markets, world class spas, yoga, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and of course..surfing!
Surf boards and a hammock await you. This is the perfect place to re-charge all of your senses...enjoy!
Guests have access to the best hiking in Ojai right outside the front door, there are fresh oranges to pick from the tree on the property, mountain streams, pepper trees, a soccer field surrounded by the mountain range and generally the most gorgeous flora and fauna that Ojai has to offer. Please in the warmer months ( April-September) keep your dogs on a leash and tell kids to be vigilant as coyotes and rattlesnakes are part of the natural landscape and guests should be aware when hiking and with kids and dogs to remain vigilant when it is hot out. These critters don't want to interact with us but this mountain range is their home so we should be aware when enjoying its natural splendor!
Interaction with Guests
Guest can text me or call me at any time if they need something. I live in Los Angeles but my folks live on the property and are available for anything guests may need from extra firewood, to tea light candles. The key and a manual are left for you so if you don't want to see anyone, you have that option also. The property is one acre so complete privacy is available.
The East End of Ojai is the most gorgeous area in Ojai. It is a sought after respite for people from neighboring Los Angeles where vacation homes are kept, but is also one steeped with long time residents who will give a friendly wave to anyone who happens past on foot, bicycle or car. Low traffic, close to town, like mountains in Spain, or the South of France. It's exquisite by all standards of what paradise looks like. Flanked by two prep schools, students jogging and horseback riding are a frequent sight. It's a great place to unwind.
There is a cute open air trolley car that picks up and let's off at Boccalis restaurant from the center of town which is a walk from the house. Drive is 3-5 minutes. Walk is about 45 minutes.
Other Things to Note
The house is the perfect balance of nature and town. Just far enough away to make one feel completely at peace. A massage and Pilates studio are a short walk up the trail, and hiking is at the front door. Because the house flanks a national forest, please be aware that indigenous California wildlife is part of the landscape. We advise that you keep your dog on a leash while outside of the fenced yard. Please in the warmer months tell kids to be vigilant as rattlesnakes are part of the natural landscape and guests should be aware when hiking and with kids and dogs to remain vigilant when it is hot out. These critters don't want to interact with us but this mountain range is their home so we should be aware when enjoying its natural splendor! Otherwise enjoy the utter gorgeousness! Incredible beaches are a 30 minute drive away and surfboards are available!
Please be sure to adhere to check-in/check-out times as we often are booked back to back and Kristy the housekeeper needs time to make the house sparkle:).

This is an amazing, beautiful, quaint house in a great location 5 minutes from town. Lush greenery, tons of windows and natural light, a great outdoor space open to the sounds of nature. It's a stunning place for a quiet and relaxing retreat. If you like eclectic and artful design and decor, you will absolutely love this place. All the amenities (pretty much anything you could need) are there. Plus, it's dog friendly! My mom and our dogs had a fabulous time. Great stay.
The house is in a very lovely setting and is close to a fantastic hiking trail. Other than that we weren't very pleased with our stay. The house wasn't well equipped and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. There were spider webs and dead flies everywhere and dust and dead plant leaves on surfaces. The downstairs bedroom area is very low and my husband could not stand up completely. The bathroom area is cramped and the hot water doesn't last long enough for two showers. The main reason why we booked this house was for the outside area and it was also a disappointment. It again looked like it hadn't been tended to in weeks. If you are a single person and are under 5'7", then maybe this house would work for you. I also PM the host twice and never heard from her once.
Please read the myriad of incredible reviews below. Cleanliness, beauty, smart design, nature, are mentioned time and time again. Unfortunately I was attending a trade show and somehow missed Merikos PMs. However all was attended to and the great thing about the place is that guests let themselves in and can have as much contact with me as they like. I take great pains to make sure this house is a spotless gem. Sorry that Meriko had such a bad weekend. The house is a beautiful, fresh, and well situated in an incredible slice of Ojai. Cheers
Great communication. Check process was very simple. Listing accurately described.
We were in need of an escape from job and city stress of LA, and the Agave House provided the perfect antidote. The location was ideal -- close enough to pop into town for a meal and shopping -- but for quiet time, the peacefulness of the surrounding area was perfect. Smelling the fragrant air and hearing the chirping of birds while surrounded by lush nature, we felt like new people. We enjoyed a sunset hike on Horn Canyon Trail for a memorable experience. Having lived in a smaller property in the past, the innovative nooks, windows, mirrors and design were appreciated. Towels and linens were comfortable. Due to thoughtfully placed windows, there is really nothing like waking up in bed on the ground floor to find yourself looking at a view of trees through the second floor ceiling. Thanks for such a unique retreat.
This was my first Airbnb experience and we had a pleasant stay at the Agave house aka Stargazing from Light Filled Beauty. Here are my pros and cons.
1. The home is beautiful inside and outside. It had a comfortable yet rustic and vintage feel to it, which made it very charming and homey.
2. The house is equipped with everything you need from kitchenware to bath towels.
3. The house comes with a bbq grill outside, which we didn't get to use.
4. The house also comes with a washer and dryer which we didn't get to use.
5. The house is right outside a hiking trail.
6. There are tons of open areas that allows for natural light to pass through.
7. The owner was very responsive to my texts.
8. The area where the house is situated is very quiet. Definitely a retreat from all of the city noise.
1. Since the owner allows pets, the first thing we noticed when we walked in was the smell of a dog and we found a couple traces of dog hair. I thought the housekeeper would at least spray the house with some lysol to get rid of the smell.
2. When you walk into the house, you'll find it small compared to how it looks on the outside. My boyfriend is 5'9 1/2 and he found it a bit tight and the ceiling a bit low. I'm only 5' and I found the stairway down to the bedroom a bit tight.
3. I think this place is really only for 2 people especially if you want some privacy because the house has lots of open areas. For example, from the dining/kitchen area you can see the bedroom, because there are two spots in the dining/kitchen area where the floor is glass and you can see through it.
Despite my cons, Caitlin's home is still such a lovely home! I loved how she decorated the place. Too bad we didn't get to use the backyard and the grill, perhaps next time!
Please see the myriad of incredible reviews below. The Agave House is known for smelling of orange blossoms and is spotless. This is indicated in several reviews. Also the floor skylights are placed very separately from the bedrooms to allow for beautiful sky views from both rooms. It's a gem ;).
Thank you for the loveliest retreat!! We spent a wonderful night enjoying your beautiful house, we even brought take out for dinner so we could enjoy it to the fullest extent. It's whimsically decorated and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Thank you!

Hello! I am a creative professional..illustrator, interior designer and brand consultant, living in Los Feliz, CA. I just co-founded my own business, a Design/Art House called Zoe Bios Creative. Our showroom is located in Silverlake CA, and we offer art and home furnishings. Although I love my LA neighborhood, it is great to keep my home in Ojai as a vacation rental so that I can escape to it from time to time to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, to hike, and to enjoy small town life..:). I love the idea of sharing my place and the experience of Ojai with others! It is truly a great place to both relax and/or work, and recharge. I have completely redesigned it to let in lots of light and veiws...I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do! Cheers! Caitlin
