ABOUT KAYA'S PLACE
Kaya's Place is a 26 room lodge on the stunning Black Beach in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Built in the Afro-Caribbean "Rustico" style, the hotel is artistic and unique. Local woods and materials have been used in their natural state, making each room different and beautiful. Every space you encounter will be a pleasurable experience. The sound of the waves is always in the background, soothing and tranquil, guaranteed to take you away from the stress of everyday life. Inside the hotel, you will find many places to relax. The reception area is more like a living room, with a gigantic sofa, television, people to chat with and view of the ocean. The large deck upstairs has a wonderful ocean view with hammocks and sofas - perfect for reading or taking a siesta. In the back, gardens line the walkway, filled with local plants and flowers. A covered sitting area in the garden offers another opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of others while you stay with us. Our restaurant is spacious and open with view of the ocean and a small creek with fish, water lilies, crab and other water life.
Located in Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean Coast, the area is blessed with natural beauty in the form of dense jungle with impressive flora and fauna and some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Kaya's Place is part of the growing eco-tourism industry that supports the preservation of almost 2 million square meters of primary rainforest. Taxes from this industry support the many national reserves and efforts to maintain the natural resources. We are dedicated to preserving these resources while sharing it with all the people that come to know this amazingly beautiful part of Costa Rica.
Our recent renovation of Kaya's Place was completed with the same philosophy. No lumber or materials were taken from the primary rainforest. Much was recycled wood or dead fall from local farms and lumber that had washed up from the ocean and rivers. With these natural and renewable materials, we achieved a unique character with rustic and artistic designs.

I stayed at Kaya's Place for a month and enjoyed it. I had a private room with a shared bath. This was the first time I stayed at a hotel during my travels (I usually rent apartments) and the first time that I shared a bathroom. I had a lot of hesitation, but figured I could always upgrade. There was no need! I never waited to use either. I thought the cold showers would be difficult since I take near scalding showers, but the cold was a relief from the heat of the day. The room didn't have A/C, but it came with a little fan that is crazy powerful (I expected it to take flight).
I work during my travels, so I spent a lot of time in the bar/restaurant, where the wifi works best. This allowed me to meet people from all over the world and develop friendships with a lot of them.
Kaya's is on a black sand beach, which is only on the north side of town. Only a road sits between you and the beach. The surf is soothing, but can crash hard against the sand.
The town is very small and Kaya's is just north of town -- easily walk. (also, buses/shuttles will drop you off and pick you up, but the bus stop is only a 5-7 minute walk).
It's Costa Rica so things happen. The power went out. The internet went out. When in a foreign country you can't expect everything to be as they are at home. Remember that and you'll have a great time.
I did miss having a kitchen and a good place to store food. There are these little ants that can get into almost anything. (Kaya's does offer rooms with kitchens)
Kayas place was great. Great staff and good vibes. However I felt the place needed a manager , the kitchen often ran out of food, the bar with drinks, and the bathrooms of toilet paper. Overall, for the price, it was great. More relaxing than if it was right in town.
It was a nice place with a friendly staff
cheap but not that nice. didnt like the room and the location.
This place was good. There is a bar with great beer, it's RIGHT next to the beach, and they make a pretty delicious pizza (and pasta). It's also walking distance to town, but far enough out that you still feel like you're in nature. There was a fan in my room which was pretty noisy but it cooled the room down just enough to sleep. Only 4 stars because the shower was somehow ice cold (despite the hot weather) and mosquitoes kept getting into my room despite pretty diligently closing the door, but that might just be the reality of the area. Be sure to bring bug-repellent for anywhere in the Caribbean.
I really enjoyed my stay at Kaya's Place. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the accommodations exceeded my expectations. Kaya's Place is within walking distance of local shops restaurants and beaches, so transportation is not needed.
I loved staying here. The people were very nice. I love the ambiance, lots of trees around, right in front of the beach. A little away from town, but still within walking distance. Bikes for rent. Hand crafted beer on tap. Need I say more?
I stayed 30 days at Kaya's Place and was well taken care of by "JT" and the staff. My room was kept cleaned daily and anything which did not work in my room was fixed ASAP.
A great place to stay in PV. Close enough to town to easily walk, far enough to have peace and quiet. The location is right in front of the black sand beach and the ocean. The manager JT is very knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend Kaya's Place to anyone wanting to visit the PV area.
