  • What a great way to start my holiday in Alaska. Ruth and Allen were lovely welcoming hosts and certainly went the extra mile to make me welcome. The room was excellent, very comfy bed, own bathroom and I especially enjoyed the hot tub in the evening. I got around just fine on the bus which was just a couple of minutes walk away, and the taxi service was very prompt when called. Juneau was lovely my 4 days went by way too quickly. Would definitely stay with Ruth and Allen again if I am lucky enough to visit juneau again. :)

  • Staying at the Fern Glen House was a memorable experience for us. Location was perfect, easy to get around without a car because of availability of bus line . House and gardens are beautiful. Ruth and Allan are very knowledgable about the area and can steer you in the right direction no matter what you would like to do. Allan also has the inside scoop on a fabulous fish and chips restaurant! Fern Glen is the total package!

  • Of our 16 day Alaska/Yukon/BC trip, our three best days were while staying in Juneau with Allan and Ruth.
They are genuinely friendly, and hospitable.
The bed was comfortable, lots of big, fresh fluffy towels incl extra for the jacuzzi, not to mention matching plush robes.
Breakfast was varied with cereals, organic pop tarts, bread, decent coffee. They're also not adverse to you poking around their spices and condiments, which we really appreciated as we cooked crab as well as risotto on consecutive nights.
The area is very green and quiet set in a residential neighbourhood perhaps a mile west of the hospital. Having a car would make things easier, though buses always ran as scheduled (every 30 or 60 min).
By far our fondest memories are Allan driving us up to Herbert Glacier then biking and hiking in to some fantastic views. Topping that was the best fish n chips ever.....a well-noted dive called Sandbar Cafe.
Allan also took us to the Brewery on the way to the ferry.
I might add much of this and Allan's company isn't obligated nor should be expected. He's just a really nice man. We come from a different walk of life but learned lots from each other, We hope we connect with them again.
If you're looking for an alternative stay among interesting locals, there is no better value. Book now before they realize they can ask for more.

  • Ruth and Allan could not have been more gracious hosts and they are very knowledgeable about the area activities and wildlife. The room is quite cozy, the bed is very comfortable and the hot tub is divine! Everything was very clean and we felt very welcome. Located in between the airport and downtown so we did okay without a car for the first few days using the public bus line, but having a car makes getting around much quicker and more convenient as taxis in Juneau are expensive. Great local coffee and basic cereal and fruit is provided plus access to their kitchen and grill to cook your own food, so you don't have to eat out every meal (although I highly recommend the fresh fish or crab at a local restaurant at least once during a visit to Juneau).

  • The best airbnb I've stayed at! Very gracious, friendly, hospitable, helpful, knowledgeable hosts, very comfortable bed, great attention to the details of the accommodations and to the needs of a traveler. The area is very quiet and safe and the view out the back window is like a postcard - so beautiful and peaceful! No wonder they book up fast!

  • My stay with Ruth and Allan was very pleasant. Fern Glen is a lovely house set in a temperate rainforest area within easy walking distance of bus services if you do not have a car. I utilised the bus system and found it very convenient. I appreciated Ruth's and Allan's friendliness and I was made to feel very welcome. I would recommend their hospitality and home highly.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Fern Glen. Ruth and Allan are wonderful hosts and their house and gardens are beautiful. Our room was comfortable and attractive with great attention to detail and we had a private bathroom on our level. They also have a hot tub overlooking the woods in the back which guests are free to use. We had use of the kitchen and places to store our food in a cabinet and in their refrigerator, and free coffee and tea each morning. One evening they allowed us use of the kitchen and dining area to enjoy a meal prepared by our son and daughter-in-law who live in an apartment nearby; that was a treat. Another morning Allan invited us to share a delicious batch of oatmeal he had prepared. We got lots of good advice on where to go, where to eat and what to see. I would highly recommend Fern Glen to the independent traveler looking for a personalized and economical lodging experience in Juneau!
