The Space

This incredible three story house is on a quiet dead end road in the quaint village of Nyuh Kuning in Southern Ubud. The property is a three-minute walk to Ubud's famous monkey forest, and from there, a five-minute walk into central Ubud. The house sleeps up to 14 people, and includes three bedrooms on the second floor, an office and yoga space on the third floor, a guest house (bunk beds and queen size bed, plus to small bedrooms with a shared bathroom in a separate building, and an amazing open concept ground floor with stunning views of the jungle valley to our west (yes great sunsets).

The house has some unique features which makes it ideal for families and large groups - including a copper bathtub perched on a balcony overlooking a river valley, a double shower, and a handmade bunk bed with play space in the kids room. Bedrooms have AC, though lovely breezes from the valley keep everything cool. The guest house has a queen size bed and newly made teak bunk beds. There's also a solid wi-fi connection.

The property features a massive salt water pool, a basketball hoop, a badminton court and a ping pong table. There's also an organic vegetable garden, and plenty of coconut trees full of young coconuts to keep you hydrated. The basics are also taken care of - there are mosquito nets on all the beds, nighttime security, and a full staff, including two gardeners, a cook, and two cleaning maids.

Interaction with Guests

If you stay at our house, it means we're away! Either back in Canada, or travelling somewhere in Asia.

A bit about us: We're an active Canadian family of 5 - three boys, the oldest age 15 (Emmet), and twins age 10 (Myles and Austin). Four years ago we relocated to Bali, and have been enjoying the change of pace and fresh air ever since. We love Bali, and love meeting new people.

During your stay, we're happy to suggest things to do, places to see, and interesting people to meet. Some of our favourite things to do are yoga classes, mountain biking, and visits to some of Bali's incredible temples. We can also connect you to a local driver, or help rent a scooter. So go ahead and splurge, and stay at a great house for families in Ubud!

The Neighborhood

Nyuh Kuning is in Southern Ubud, just below the monkey forest. It has been named the cleanest village in Indonesia several times!

We love leaving here as it's quiet, beautiful, but still very close to Ubud.

Getting around

The easiest ways to get around Ubud is on foot, by bicycle, by scooter, or by taxi (usually a private driver).

  • I never actually saw the house as there was a last minute change of plans and the house wasn't available, so Peter organised for us to stay at their friend's place ( It wasn't quite as convenient in terms of bedrooms, but it was a beautiful house and Peter and Yoni were very helpful with coordinating the change. The view and pool were stunning, and Made the cook was lovely and cooked us a wonderful array of food.

  • What a wonderful unique home. Our holiday in Ubud was certianly made by staying at Rumah Kubu. The openess of the home created a tree house feeling. There was sufficient space to accommodate 10 of us comfortably even when it was raining. The Views, Pool and staff all came together to make for a memorable stay. Staying south of Monkey Forest ensured we were not quite in the hustle and bustle that has developed in Ubud over the years. Local restaurants were fine but the service was not fast, Home deliveries were very convenient. Thank you Peter and Janet

  • Great house in a great suburb. The staff at the house were also excellent, very helpful. It does take a while to walk into the centre of Ubud, but no more than 20 min. It is about 3 min to the Monkey Forest and from there you have lots of options for food and shopping.

This house is very open plan and open to the elements, and has that Ubud “magic” that is lacking in most accommodation options in Bali now.

  • Excellent séjour en famille chez Peter.
Havre de paix en proximité du centre d'UBUD.

  • Such an amazing well designed house. We had the best time and the staff were so friendly. Its in the best area of Ubud great for families too. Peter dropped in a couple of times to say hi, super nice guy. We will be back again for sure!

  • Our group had an amazing time at Rumah Kubu. Peter and his staff were friendly and prompt with any questions we had leading up to the stay. The staff were also fabulous during out time at the house. Kadek's cooking is exceptional and Ari was fantastic in answering our questions and making bookings for us. Any concerns we had were dealt with efficiently and professionally. The house itself is amazing and far more impressive than can be shown in photos. The view is gorgeous and the atmosphere of the place is open, relaxed and luxurious. It's lovely to be a little way out of the Ubud bustle, with no traffic noise and lovely local businesses to support. We highly recommend the small shop at the end of the laneway which is run by a very friendly family. The cooking class a few doors down, run by Cafe Wayan, was also fantastic. But the biggest highlight was really just spending time at home and lazing by the pool. We really couldn't have hoped for more and we are so thankful to Peter and the staff for making it such a great holiday. Looking forward to coming back another time! Thanks Peter.

  • We stayed 7 nights in Peter's house and it was our best accomodation in Bali. This house is splendid and also very convenient for families. Close to the center of Ubud and very quiet however. We recommend it!

  • July 2013. An idyllic house tucked away from the bustle, overlooking a morning mist-filled, jungle ravine. A short and always interesting stroll through the monkey forest to get into 'town'. We stayed 4 nights and were very sad to leave. Ari and Kadek were lovely - attentive, welcoming and friendly. Delicious banana pancakes were devoured each morning. The house is an amazing family home with unique design - the views are captured from almost every room. The bathrooms are a delight. We settled very comfortably into the main open air living area during the day and the kids were thrilled to race upstairs to the bunk beds at night. The large, clean, deep wonder of a pool was well used by us all each day. We expect we will return.

  • We stayed at Peter's house in July 2013. The house is very nice, great location in Ubud, close to the Monkey Forest. The staff is very pleasant. Special thanks for the pool from kids :)). Peter's house is a great opportunity to live in a real house, not a villa. For us, it was very interesting. Thank you Peter and your family. :)

Janet is a magazine editor and yoga teacher, and Peter is a cofounder of Hubud, Ubud's coworking space.
We're a family of 5 from Canada living in Indonesia. This is our fourth year abroad and we don't know if we will ever leave! In 2011, we bought and renovated our dream house, in Nyuh Kuning, a neighourhood just south of the Monkey Forest in Ubud, where we now live. Our three children (a teenager and twin tweens) attend the famous 'Green School' here in Bali, about 25 minutes away. Janet runs a magazine called Inspired Bali, as well as teaching various yoga retreats throughout the year. Peter is a former journalist turned entrepreneur, and is the cofounder (email hidden) in Ubud called Hubud. Come stay with us!
