Essence Arenal was great! We had to adjust our reservations really last minute and they were really great about making it happen. The tent we stayed in had a great view of the volcano and has a hiking path through the jungle. It was great! Thank you for the stay!
My boyfriend and I had a lovely time staying at the essence hostel in el Castillo. We stayed in a private tent with a bunk bed- double on the bottom and single on the top. The tents are clean and relatively bug free. The have a large locker inside each tent for your belongings. The tent doors are Velcro, but we never felt unsafe on the property. The tent had electricity and a nice screened window that looked out into the jungle. You are outside, so expect the sounds of nature booming through your tent at all hours of the night. Paths are lit by street lamps so you can make it around the grounds quite safely. There is strong internet available in the shared area and spotty internet in the tents which is to be expected. The property had a bathroom located about 20 meters from the tent with a shower that had a view of Lake Arenal. There is hott water.
The property itself is a farm with a coffee garden, vegetable garden, natural pool, and yoga stage located about a 15 minutes walk from the tents. Tours are given every day depending on the weather and cost about $8 per person. Be warned, if you take the paved driveway, it's a steep trek and good shoes are encouraged. If you take the trail, it's a good hike down and up the side of the mountain. Again, good shoes encouraged. Breakfast is served in the morning for an additional $5 per person. Dinner is served every night for an additional $10 per person. Dinners are themed.
To get to essence you need a 4WD vehicle- it's BUMPY up the mountain. You can drive or walk to the butterfly conservatory. It has a beautiful trail and several tents with different types of butterflies. You are provided with a tour guide, and tickets are about $15 per person. There are some great restaurants on the mountain as you make your way to La Fortuna. We highly recommend "La Ventanita". Delicious and authentic tico food from an expat. Get the patacones and a fresh fruit drink, you won't regret it.
I had an amazing time at essence Arenal. We arrived late at night, and were brought to our amazing tents. It felt like sleeping in a tree house; you could hear monkey and see the whole sky from the tent window. In the morning, we woke up to see one of the most incredible views I've ever experienced. We practiced yoga in the morning, and cooked a family meal together at night. Overall, the experience at Essence was simply perfect.
My experience was great! This the place you want to stay if you want to see more of the really Costa Rica. It's a community not a tourist destination. Everyone who works here is very helpful and can arrange anything you might need. I personally enjoyed the tents more then a room. It's a great place to meet fellow travels.
I stayed in a private jungle tent and loved it. It was more than enough space for one person and could easily fit 3 or 4 people with the bunk beds.
The common lounge area outside with jacuzzi and hammocks was perfect for a much needed break after hiking. The food and service was remarkable. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. I wish I could have spent more than one night there.
Definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Not only was it an amazing experience sleeping in a tent in the rainforest, but the people we met were equally amazing. Essence offers such a unique experience that really affords you the opportunity to get outside of your comfort zone and exceed all expectations for your trip! The family style cooking and eating was wonderful and allowed us to meet some really extraordinary new friends. Melissa and Nico are awesome and made us feel at home immediately. Melissa hooked us up with a great local food spot and Nico help us design our route to our next location. The route cut our trip time in half and we saw some really gorgeous scenery. Would go back in a heartbeat!
As we were dropped off, Nico greeted us and made us feel welcome. He booked all our transfers and excursions for us. What a paradise this place is! We loved our safari tent...we decided to stay another day. Loved the vegetarian meals by Martin, Melissa's yoga, the tours of the grounds. What a great climate and place to stay. If your lucky enough to get a tent with a balcony you are in for a treat!
