The newly remodeled studio apartment is in the quite upper Dimond neighborhood. It is less than 20 minute drive to San Francisco, Oakland, or Berkeley. It is less than a 15 minute walk to restaurants, banks, public transit, great La Farine Bakery, grocery stores, Peets Coffee and Tea. Great for visiting the Bay Area while staying in a quite neighborhood.
The apartment is a well lighted ground floor unit below our house with a separate entrance. The ceiling has been sound insulated to reduce noise from above. The bathroom has a shower. You have washer/dryer privileges and Wi Fi access. The studio has a gas fireplace, refrigerator, microwave, 4 burner gas stove with oven, 42 inch TV, Ipod/Iphone alarm clock/speaker and coffee maker. Full sized bed sleeps 2.

We really enjoyed our stay at Gene's place. It was VERY cozy, literately a home away from home. The fireplace was a huge plus and it's obvious Gene put a lot of thought into the studio. He arranged coffee for us in the morning as well as pastries for breakfast. The apartment had everything we needed and the shower heater worked out great. He provided the wifi code and simple instructions so there was no confusion at all.
We didn't have noise issues like some people mentioned because we really were not there during the day. And Gene even warned us when it could get noisy because of babysitting their grandkids but we were out enjoying the city so we had absolutely no issues.
Highly recommend Gene and we would definitely stay again if we're in the area.
Gene is incredibly receptive-quick to reply to emails and texts- and at the same time discreet- allowing our vacation to be private. The space is very sweet and so much more comfortable and convenient than a hotel in this area would have been. I love being in a neighborhood close to trails in the hills and coffee shops down below. We will recommend this studio to other family members who frequently visit this area.
Clean, beautiful, great location. What a great experience! Thank you Gene!
Our recent experience at the Yellow Door Studio in Oakland was great!! The studio is lovely and we felt immediately at home. The kitchen area is perfect for morning coffee and/or a light snack or meal in the evening. The neighborhood is great for walking and the neighbors were very friendly. There are two markets, several places to eat, and shops within a 10 minute walk from the studio. Gene and Joann were away but left us everything we needed for an enjoyable holiday stay. I hope that the Yellow Door Studio will be available the next time my wife and I visit Oakland.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the yellow door. Gene responded quickly every time I sent an email. He was out of town when we were there. Yet, he was available by phone when we had a question. The place was clean and very quiet. We were able to help our daughter with holiday cooking in the kitchenette. I expect we will stay there again!
We would like to join the feedback from the previous comments...
Our first experience with AirBnB was very positive.
The studio was perfectly prepared for a warm welcome (clean, charming, fresh pastry + coffee and a relaxing atmosphere).
A quiet neighborhood, easy parking right in front of the studio, plenty of stores (e.g. Farmer Joe’s, French bakery) nearby, and Gene as a very pleasant host makes it to a preferred option for any return to the Bay area.
Perfect stay. The owners pay attention to details. Fresh flowers, homemade cookies, comfy bed, spacious shower. We were happy to find scissors and tape to wrap some presents too! The neighborhood is quiet and people in the area were very friendly. One afternoon we walked the length of the Diamond Canyon (a few blocks away). Fun bit of nature in the middle of an urban landscape. We were here to visit family and would be quite happy to stay again.
Gene was awesome. We didn't get a chance to meet, but he was very accommodating to my situation. I booked last minute, plans changed twice, and he just went with it. I really appreciated his cooperation and communication. The space is incredibly cozy, clean and modern with a rustic vibe. If you're looking for a low key, affordable place to stay in the bay and have a car, you can't go wrong with Yellow Door.
We stayed at the Yellow Door Studio for a little over a month when we first moved to Oakland, and it proved the perfect location for our needs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Yellow Door Studio! Gene and Joann are wonderful hosts who truly love their home, their neighborhood and their city. My wife and I now consider them friends.
The space itself is clean and charming, with a comfortable bed, a surprisingly well-appointed kitchen and great bathroom. And, if you're nice, you'll get the chance to hang out and swap stories in Gene and Joann's wonderful backyard. We also made great use of the cable television (a first for us!) and were able to store a mountain bike in the garage and use the washer and dryer. All in all, a great spot for a single person or couple to spend a week or a month (or more).
As for the neighborhood, a truly great, independent grocer (Farmer Joe's) is a short walk from the studio, as is La Farine bakery (excellent French baked goods), Hive (a good coffee shop to work from) and Las Comales (a good taqueria). You might hear some negative things regarding the Dimond District and crime, but we never had any problems whatsoever during our stay and felt very comfortable throughout the neighborhood.
While BART access requires a bus or bike ride, we regularly took the bus into Downtown Oakland and the Grand Lake, Piedmont and Adams Pt. neighborhoods. The studio is also very close to Joaquin Miller Park and Redwood Regional Park, both of which offer great views, some fun walking opportunities and very good mountain bike trails.
Finally, a car is pretty much a necessity in the East Bay -although we did much of our travel by bus, train or foot- and Dimond is a good location in this regard. 580 and 13 are easily accessible and offer quick access to Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco and the areas east of the hills (e.g., Walnut Creek). Street parking is not an issue whatsoever near the studio.
