Cottage by the sea has been winterized and is closed for the season. We reopen for bookings in April. If you are interested in a long term stay from November to March, please contact us and we might be able to open her back up.
Gabarus is a traditional Cape Breton fishing village overlooking the Atlantic with its own small bay. My family has lived in Gaburus for generations.
Our cottage was my great, great aunt's and was built at the turn of the 20th century to house a family, two small bedrooms for the kids and a larger one for the parents. It's very rustic, the kitchen has a coal-fired stove (together with all the standard modern conveniences), the bathroom is tiny, and any washing is hand and clothes-line only.
Gaburus is still in many ways a traditional Maritime fishing village, mainly lobster nowadays. The village's tricentennial is coming up in 2016.
Because I'm serving in the Eastern Hemisphere and my parents are living in Arizona, we only get to use the cottage a few weeks a year. It's being maintained by a relative while we're away, but we would like to open the house to respectful guests.
This is a 100% non-smoking house. It's very old and needs to be treated with a lot of respect.
Jaqualine, the host, was gracious and made herself available, if needed.
We felt very welcome.
Charming, cozy cottage in a beautiful little village. Peaceful, relaxing and a great way to get a feel for the area. Friendly neighbours!
Although the cottage is rustic as advertised, it still felt cozy and homey. The kitchen was well stocked with essentials and cookware, towels and linens were all provided. Had a great back deck with BBQ. The bath is definitely tiny - best to sit in the tub while showering! Luckily, the sink and toilet are in a separate room, which works well for a larger group stay. The town is tiny, but has a quiet little beach to walk along. Definitely recommend if you want a real getaway from the grid!
The cottage came up when I searched for Baddeck and it was my fault for not looking carefully at the precise location, Gabarus, which is easily 45 mins from Baddeck, so for that, I fault Airbnb, not the hosts. also, my assumption was that the bnb in the name airbnb stood for breakfast, and there was none provided at this location. Again, not the fault of the hosts.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. the cottage is quite roomy but is 20 mins from any store, gas station, etc. Again, not a problem if you know in advance.
The experience with the Polochecks will have me returning to Gabarus as well as utilizing AIRBNB again. The cottage was as advertised, a bit rustic, close to the Gabarus Bay as well as the Atlantic ocean. What they failed to mention is the generosity and friendliness of the cottage managers and the local neighbors. I stayed a month, and found it hard to leave. This is the place if you want quiet and time to read, complete a project and just watch and listen to the water. The deck is fabulous for both.
The cottage has lots of character, great views and scenic location ... all that we required. It has all the crockery, saucepans & other necessities of life, including heating. All great and all that I expected. Gabarus is beautiful for any time of year.
We arrived late, however, on a cold, wet, misty night. The Sailors Cove road is windy and rough round the edges, so the journey there seemed interminable. Then we had trouble finding the cottage in the dark, because there are others like it. The back door was stiff, so we thought it was still locked and we spent some time fumbling around in the dark & wet looking for the right neighbour. The moral or the story is, I think, to arrive in daylight!! And to know that there is no shop in the village for supplies - although there is a miniature Post Office a couple of doors down.
Thank you Josh and Gugulethu for allowing us to stay!
This is a great little cottage - packed with character. We stayed for four days and didn't leave the village once. Just read books, cooked and went for runs or walks along the beach.
Definitely somewhere to really get away from it all.
Top tip - mind your head on the stairs!
