About this listing
Cottage by the sea has been winterized and is closed for the season. We reopen for bookings in April. If you are interested in a long term stay from November to March, please contact us and we might be able to open her back up.
Gabarus is a traditional Cape Breton fishing village overlooking the Atlantic with its own small bay. My family has lived in Gaburus for generations.
Our cottage was my great, great aunt's and was built at the turn of the 20th century to house a family, two small bedrooms for the kids and a larger one for the parents. It's very rustic, the kitchen has a coal-fired stove (together with all the standard modern conveniences), the bathroom is tiny, and any washing is hand and clothes-line only.
Gaburus is still in many ways a traditional Maritime fishing village, mainly lobster nowadays. The village's tricentennial is coming up in 2016.
Because I'm serving in the Eastern Hemisphere and my parents are living in Arizona, we only get to use the cottage a few weeks a year. It's being maintained by a relative while we're away, but we would like to open the house to respectful guests.
This is a 100% non-smoking house. It's very old and needs to be treated with a lot of respect.
Belle petite maison sans prétention. Lits confortable. Village tranquille et gens sympathiques. Le tout bien d'écrit. Belle plage presque privée puis que très peu de gens y circulent. Merci de votre chaleureux accueil.
Jacqueline was so welcoming and made me feel right at home. The cottage is rustic but very cozy and the deck has a wonderful view of the harbor. One week was not enough and I wish I could have stayed longer.
We had a wonderful week last week at the cottage. Perfect spot, well-appointed, friendly neighbors, are more beaches than we could shake our sticks at. Tim and Jackie friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. Apparently it's always sunny and 25 degrees in Gabarus.... or at least that was our experience. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Jaqualine, the host, was gracious and made herself available, if needed.
We felt very welcome.
Charming, cozy cottage in a beautiful little village. Peaceful, relaxing and a great way to get a feel for the area. Friendly neighbours!
Although the cottage is rustic as advertised, it still felt cozy and homey. The kitchen was well stocked with essentials and cookware, towels and linens were all provided. Had a great back deck with BBQ. The bath is definitely tiny - best to sit in the tub while showering! Luckily, the sink and toilet are in a separate room, which works well for a larger group stay. The town is tiny, but has a quiet little beach to walk along. Definitely recommend if you want a real getaway from the grid!
The cottage came up when I searched for Baddeck and it was my fault for not looking carefully at the precise location, Gabarus, which is easily 45 mins from Baddeck, so for that, I fault Airbnb, not the hosts. also, my assumption was that the bnb in the name airbnb stood for breakfast, and there was none provided at this location. Again, not the fault of the hosts.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. the cottage is quite roomy but is 20 mins from any store, gas station, etc. Again, not a problem if you know in advance.

About the Host, Joshua & Gugulethu
We're a married diplomatic duo and a half who've lived in thirteen countries on four continents over the last decade, sometimes together, sometimes apart. We speak four and a half languages and went to a music festival in rural England just to see Belle & Sebastian. Our half was born last year and she's already been to her first music festival.
We've been using airbnb for years now both as guests and as hosts (in two countries!). It's hard to remember the last time we stayed in a hotel when it wasn't a work trip (and even most of those we use airbnb).
