The space
Treehaus is a renovated 1960s chalet hugging a hillside overlooking the ski slopes under the shade of an ancient, giant Juniper tree. We’ve styled the space to create a warm and friendly vibe by blending vintage and playful alpine decor with modern details. Enjoy extraordinary panoramic views of the mountains and tree tops from every room in this 1000 sf space. The open floor plan upstairs, large windows, and vaulted beam ceilings bring nature indoors. Throw a log in the stone fireplace, stare out at the incredible views, and create lasting memories. At night, star gazing from the deck will take you away. Enjoy cooking in the modern kitchen or do some grilling in the shady backyard while taking in the fresh mountain air!

Enter the cabin on the lower level between two small bedrooms, which stay cozy and warm due to central heating. Both bedrooms each have a plush queen mattress on a log frame bed with down pillows, down comforter with cotton duvet, and wool blanket. Bedroom 2 also has a twin roll-away bed stored in the closet which can unfold to sleep a child, for those who will share a room but not a bed. There is one jack-and-jill bathroom downstairs that is shared between (and accessed from) the two bedrooms. The bathroom layout places the sink and shower in one compartment and the toilet and laundry in another compartment, with a pocket door separating the two areas of the bathroom to add some privacy.

Upstairs you’ll find the living areas under our high ceilings. The dining table overlooks the view and was hand-made by us out of solid hickory. Two benches and two eames-style chairs will seat all of you when dining in. There is a large sectional sofa in the living room that will comfortably seat all of you when you binge-watch Netflix on a snow day. The sofa unfolds into a queen bed in a pinch. At night, the furnace heats the downstairs rooms more effectively than upstairs, so if you’re sleeping on the sofa upstairs then be prepared to pile on the blankets - we have plenty to keep you cozy. There is also a full bathroom with tub located next to the living room.

A flatscreen 4K Roku Smart TV in living room with BluRay player, bluetooth soundbar, and subwoofer will provide endless entertainment and allow you to access our personal digital movie library as well as streaming content on Netflix, Hulu, Prime etc. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookingware and utensils. Linens and towels are provided. Other features include crockpot, microwave, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. You like games? We have a foosball table, playing cards, puzzles, and board games including Apples to Apples, Sequence, Monopoly, Scrabble, and Sorry. Out back we have a fun swing, charcoal BBQ grill/smoker, string lights, and a homemade redwood bench for hanging out in the shade of our giant tree.

Please note we do not have air conditioning - you won’t find AC in typical 1960s mountain cabins and it’s rarely hot enough. For warmer summer days, you can open windows to take advantage of the natural cross breezes from our hilltop, augmented by our 3 portable fans.

Your well-behaved and house-trained pooch is welcome with a $25 one-time pet fee per dog (2 max). The front deck is a great perch for Fido to overlook the neighborhood and watch the birds and squirrels, but be advised the back yard is not fenced and the neighborhood is visited by coyotes. Pets are family and should stick with you at all times during your stay so you can experience the joys of mountain life together. Please don’t leave your pet unattended inside or outside unless you’re bringing a crate.

Narrow uphill driveway with steep approach is not ideal for full size/oversize vehicles (or the faint of heart)! 4WD/AWD is ideal and recommended in winter conditions, and low clearance vehicles are discouraged due to steep approach from street. We can accommodate 2 cars parked in tandem, provided they can all fit. 9’ total width between concrete wall and railing make it a tight fit for vehicles over 74” in width to maneuver and unload. One vehicle can park at the bottom of the driveway before the railing starts, but it’s a steep walk up with all your luggage. Ask if you’re unsure whether your car will be suitable.

Where you’ll be

Big Bear Lake, California, United States

From inside the cabin it feels very secluded, but we are in a residential area with other homes on all sides - some of which may be occupied by vacationers. Located in the Moonridge neighborhood, guests will love the nature sounds, mountain and treetop views, birdwatching, moonrises, and stargazing. This residential neighborhood has some of the best views in town, thus many of the properties have steep terrain and steep driveways like ours. You won't have to deal with traffic on Big Bear Blvd heading to the resorts on snow days, as we're super close to the Bear Mtn shuttle lot. Also close by is the brand new Alpine Zoo wildlife rehab facility (you may hear wolves howling at times).

Hello travelers! We are hosting two great cabins in Big Bear, CA. See below! Also follow along on IG @treehauschalet. Our first cabin, Treehaus Chalet, located in Big Bear Lake, CA is a reflection of our favorite things - mid-century architecture, mountain views, and decor inspired by our travels. We bought our chalet in late '09. It was a foreclosure that needed some love. So we fixed it up and have been sharing it with wonderful folks for a decade! Along the way, we discovered a love for mountain living and for hosting. Nine years after the first, we bought our second cabin, Stōkhaus! Because we love vintage things and the memories they evoke, we created a nostalgic space preserving the original character while making strategic upgrades, infusing lots of fun vibes of a simpler time! We visit our chalets frequently and are constantly making improvements. We are proud to have earned AirBnB Superhost status for 27 quarters, and we look forward to hosting you!
