Jericoacoara is a virgin beach hidden behind the dunes of the west coast of Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil. Selected by the The Washington Post as one of the Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, nicknamed Jeri, consists of blue lagoons, calm seas and huge dunes.
The name "Jericoaquara" comes from the tupi language and means "lair of the turtles" (îurukûá means "sea turtle", kûara means "lair, hole").
In 1984, the area around Jericoacoara was declared an Environmental Protection Area. It became a national park in 2002. As a result, many restrictions for building and tourism were introduced to help preserve the area. The distance to bigger cities and limited road access also helped keeping the beach and the village isolated. Fairly recently, Jeri was just a fishing village with little contact with modern life. Electricity was generated by diesel engines and street lights was provided only by the moon and the stars. After the Washington Post selection was published, tourism grew rapidly and the beach village became a popular destination. Electricity arrived in the village in 1998 and today a hot shower and air conditioning are no longer luxuries. However, since the illumination of the streets is forbidden by local law, street lights are still provided by the moon and the stars.
Getting to Jeri can still be challenging. The road from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara presents beaches and rustic villages. The last 45 minutes of the journey takes place off-road, "on-sand", among dunes and along a beach.
The village has streets covered in sand from the dunes by the sea. Jericoacoara is a popular spot for windsurfing and sailing.
Jericoacoara is one of several places in Brazil from where you can see the sun sink into the ocean. This show is often viewed by many, both visitors and locals, from the tall "Sunset dune" just next to the village.

Very nice house in an amazing place.
Comfortable for 2 or 3 people.
The host wasn't there but easy to contact and very helpful.
Thinking to come back
We have been in Lydies house for 3 weeks in January! It was just perfect and the location is great. The house is in a quit corner of Jeri and you have all natives around you, what is really, really great! Wanda, the housekeeper, is just georgeous. There where some small things like broken chairs in the kitchen, but we told it to Lydie and the other day we had new chairs. It was great!
If you are looking for a quiet place in the middle of paradise, go to Lydies house and just enjoy Jeri - it is really magical. We will be back one day, for sure!
Jeri is a marvelous and Lydie's place just fits perfectly in the setting. It's a nicely kept little house, perfect for a honeymoon couple or a small family.
We were very well taking care of by Vanda, the housekeeper.
Communication between Lydie and us was great! Have fun!
We were in lydie house for one week. I had bad luck because I had an ankle sprain in Jeri. So this means that I had to stay at home for long days and this was very nice. The house is cozy, moden and warm at the same time; nicely worked out with natural materials such as wood and palm leaf roof contrasted with concret pavement. It's located in an area near the Duna of Jeri in a locals area near the fantastic Pousada de la Villa. I defenitly recomend the place to feel real Jeri out of the loads of turistic places. Feel the experience of living in a house in Jeri with nice views to the dunes. Lydie is very nice, helpful and friendly. we loved to stay at your place lydie, thankyou soooo much, merci bien!!!!!
Wonderful place where you can feel like home in Jeri !
House made using traditionnal materials but furnished with nice design stuff feel like in a cocoon.
We stayed 2 people but it can fit easily 4 people (2 bedrooms with shower and toilets) and even a child or a 5th person in a smaller bedroom.
Beds are very good and cleaning done everyday !
The place is 10 minutes from the dune where everyone goes for sunset and same time to reach the central street in Jeri to drink cheap caipis or whatever !
Lydie, the owner, is really friendly and available and she has some good tips to spend a good time in Jeri !
I'd recommend to anyone who wants an affordable and nice place to spend a few days in Jeri !
