About this listing

The space

Jericoacoara is a virgin beach hidden behind the dunes of the west coast of Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil. Selected by the The Washington Post as one of the Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, nicknamed Jeri, consists of blue lagoons, calm seas and huge dunes.

The name "Jericoaquara" comes from the tupi language and means "lair of the turtles" (îurukûá means "sea turtle", kûara means "lair, hole").

In 1984, the area around Jericoacoara was declared an Environmental Protection Area. It became a national park in 2002. As a result, many restrictions for building and tourism were introduced to help preserve the area. The distance to bigger cities and limited road access also helped keeping the beach and the village isolated. Fairly recently, Jeri was just a fishing village with little contact with modern life. Electricity was generated by diesel engines and street lights was provided only by the moon and the stars. After the Washington Post selection was published, tourism grew rapidly and the beach village became a popular destination. Electricity arrived in the village in 1998 and today a hot shower and air conditioning are no longer luxuries. However, since the illumination of the streets is forbidden by local law, street lights are still provided by the moon and the stars.

Getting to Jeri can still be challenging. The road from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara presents beaches and rustic villages. The last 45 minutes of the journey takes place off-road, "on-sand", among dunes and along a beach.
The village has streets covered in sand from the dunes by the sea. Jericoacoara is a popular spot for windsurfing and sailing.
Jericoacoara is one of several places in Brazil from where you can see the sun sink into the ocean. This show is often viewed by many, both visitors and locals, from the tall "Sunset dune" just next to the village.

Lydie's place is in a quiet, secluded place of Jeri within easy walking distance of the centre and the beach. Large and spacious, more than comfortable for five people, we stayed with only two and it felt like our own private oasis in such a truly gorgeous setting. Well equipped, the apartment is cleaned everyday, has cooking facilities, two showers/bathrooms, a lovely verandah and some cool hammocks. The only catch would be for the warm nights, no air conditioning makes sleep difficult at times but aside from that there are no outstanding concerns. Really good value for money. Good Wifi No TV (if you're into that) Thoroughly enjoyable and the host was a pleasure to work with.

Lydie's place is ideally located and was perfect for the three of us. Best of all was the daily cleaning lady to keep all the sand out and make the beds. We had an amazing time in Jeri - thank you!!

The place is great, location is good too (Jeri is a small village). Easy check-in, communication with owner is quick and effective. Helpful city guide is made available. Just keep in mind that this place is more suitable for couples that share some intimacy, as one of the bathrooms is inside the bedroom and there are no doors / barriers between toilet and the bed. Other than that the house is great and Jeri is beautiful.

Hi, i'm Lydie and I've been travelling in Brazil and enjoying this amazing country for a long time now through a lot of stays and chilling over the place.
I have a house in Jericoacoara, in the state of Ceara, Nordeste of Brazil, where i welcome friends and travellers for 6 years.
Jeri is a well known little paradise : amazing nature, dunes, sunsets, kitesurf, windsurf, surf, capoeira, parties... everyone can enjoy his own way.
I know Jeri very well and have a lot of tips to share to make the most of this paradise.
