The Space

Welcome Everyone! We encourage you to direct message us with an inquiry BEFORE booking. We love answering any questions you might have about the room and the neighborhood.

General info and location:
This spacious and bright, private room is located in Long Island City - Queens, an area across the river from midtown Manhattan. The house is across the street from the 7 subway line, which takes you straight to Manhattan (8 minutes to Grand Central, 12 minutes to Times Square, 17 min to the Village). The E, M, and G subway lines are also one block away, giving just as speedy access to all parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn (5 min to Williamsburg, 30 min to Park Slope) and Queens.

We are close to the Queens MOMA PS1 museum, which also hosts outdoor dance parties on Saturdays in the summer. We are five minutes from a handful of good restaurants and bars in the LIC area. There is a 24-hour diner across the street where the food is decent, and uniquely New York!

The room:
The room is quite big and feels like a private studio with its own private bathroom, and semi-private entrance! It has recently been renovated and painted so everything is in mint condition! It is fully furnished with a queen size bed, and a desk for your computer with a comfortable chair to rest your laurels. We’ve also set up a little “breakfast nook” for you to make and enjoy an assortment of teas, or coffee, in the comfort of your room.

The room has beautiful 1880s wood floors. We've put a lot of love into making the space feel harmonious and lively, down to the subtle essential oils we diffuse around the house!

There are two windows facing the lush garden that add a sense of calm to your stay while you wake in the morning. There is a small amount of noise from the subway station, which is nearby (but that also means your travel time to the city will be short!). An air conditioning unit is provided in the summer months for your comfort.

We provide clean bedding and towels for the guests, and there is free super speedy wireless Internet, maintained by on-site IT guys.

Bonus: When pre-arranged, you may have access to the house back yard, great for enjoying your meals outside, sipping wine at sunset or practicing yoga!

Guest Access

The house:
This is an historic townhouse from the 1880s on a landmark block shared by 5 artists. You will enjoy a private bathroom where you can soak your aches away in the giant bathtub after a long day of seeing the sights. My wife Catherine and I live on the two floors above your room, and are available for questions and recommendations. You also have access to our shared kitchen, one floor up, if you would like to cook meals for yourself, in addition to our comfortable living room.

Laundry, groceries and parking:
Laundry is right in the basement of our house and the closest grocery store is about a 5 minute walk. For those of you with cars, you can usually find free, long-term parking with no problem in the evenings within a two-block radius. Finding parking in the daytime is more challenging.

Little bonuses: Iron and ironing table, French press coffee maker, assorted teas and tea water boiler in the room. We can provide Yoga mats at no charge for you to practice during your stay (we only ask that you wash them after using them).

Interaction with Guests

We are normally available to introduce you to the space and help you get acclimated to the city. In addition to us, there are also 3 others who are permanent residents of the house whom you may run into occasionally.

If you are coming from another country, we can lend you an American cell phone into which you can put an American SIM card. We have great maps and local directories to make navigating the city easy. There is a hot-pink cheetah print hair dryer and most other amenities (not all hot pink cheetah print) available upon request.

Looking forward to having you stay with us!

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • This is an ideal location for a visit to New York City. Subway entrance is only 30 steps from the front door (takes you to downtown Manhattan or Central Park in 10 minutes). Lots of nice eating or (excellent!) coffee places nearby.
It is a nice house, with a very personal touch from the host. We felt very much at home, with all necessary conveniences available. Pleasant atmosphere, no luxury. Prior to our arrival, our host Karl communicated with us about a change in the accomodation arrangement: we were offered the master bedroom without extra charge. Problem very nicely solved, thank you Karl! Very friendly, helpful and communicative host. A paper with useful information and personal tips about what to do and see in NYC was handed out to us upon arrival. I would certainly recommend this place!

  • Karl (email hidden)ry responsive and helpful and personable. This is a great spot in LIC if you want to be right next to the train. There is a 24hr diner across the street and a little bodega around the corner. The room was as described and the little amenity of coffee and tea is a nice touch! Never saw any of the other people who lived in the house, but could tell they were around. They were quiet and respectful when using the common space next to the room. I would stay with Karl again

  • Unfortunatly we haven't experienced good times in Karl's house.
If he had been committed with us we would had spent better times there.
We tried access Karl for three times to solve some issues (only one towel available, no wi-fi) but had no answer from him.
At last, we found bathroom sink clogged and a dirty kitchen.

  • My stay here was great and convenient. Close to trains, a 24 hour diner, and just steps from MoMA PS1. The permanent tenants were great to live with.

  • I really enjoyed my stay here. It was especially convenient for getting into Manhattan since it is literally across the street from the 7 train entrance and around the corner from the E,M lines at Court Sq. The room is spacious and comfortable and clean. Bathroom facility is shared but I didn't see much traffic. House people very friendly. There is some street/train noise but not bad. They provide coffee and snacks and the atmosphere is chill. Good privacy since near it's own private entrance and downstairs from main house. Karl and Syl are great hosts!

  • The place is greatly located to visit Manhattan since it is right in front of the underground. Syl and Karl are both very kind and helpful! It was a real pleasure to stay there for one week!

  • Syl and Karl are really great hosts. Very friendly, accommodating and all round nice people.

Upon arrival Syl showed me around the property and really made me feel at home.

(email hidden) alone was a real kick start to discovering New York. Over the road is the train station, where you can purchase a weekly rail / bus pass for $30.

It's a 5 min rail trip into lower manhattan and roughly a 10 min walk right into broadway.

The neighbourhood felt very safe, across the road there is a Diner that is open 24/7, which had an awesome selection of great, affordable food and has this special licence thats been grandfathered in so they can serve alcohol after 4am.

All round staying at Syl and Karl's was a great experience and next time I'm in New York I know where to stay!

    Thanks again Syl and Karl!

  • My first stay by Syl and Karl was top. Both are very friendly, obliging and helpful. The room are exactly like in the description. Overall, that was really a great time in NYC!

  • It was great staying at the home of Syl and Karl. The room is exactly as pictured. Divide the kitchen and bathroom with Erin and Andrea was very quiet (they even made cookies for us - lovely). Everyone was very attentive and friendly. Were interested by our roadmaps, they opined, very good friends. Syl talks a "portunhol" great, making it much easier for Brazilians who do not speak English, like us. Karl was fantastic when there was a problem with the taxi (small car - lots of luggage) Karl asked the car of a friend who was with him at the time and gave us a ride; Karl also received a parcel ours. Very kind!
The metro is extremely close, super practical.
It was a lovely experience and certainly, if the opportunity arises, we will stay there again.
