The Space

We offer a private room in our art and book-filled Mid-Century Ranch home. Our floors are hard-wood, (with a couple of area rugs) - so if you have sensitivities to dust and animals, this could be a great place to stay.

We have No Pets, in case you have allergies. Also, we do not allow pets to stay here, as my husband is allergic.

Your room has a very comfortable queen sized real bed with extra pillows and reading lights for your comfort.

You will also have:
* closet space
* small space heater to take off the chill - please
turn it off when not present
* several extra blankets to keep you toasty
* small desk and chair
* luggage stand to put your bags
* a couple of raincoats in your closet and umbrellas (on request) for downpours... although most of the rain we get is more like a drizzle rather than a deluge.
* our kitchen has a gas range for cooking
* room in our fridge and freezer for some food
* quick get acquainted tour of kitchen
* free wi-fi
* laundry is available - wash and dry $3.00
* Free Parking

The following are drive times and are approximate and can vary with traffic and weather.

* 6 blocks to Powell Butte Park (600 acres of trails) with fantastic views of Mt. Hood, (website hidden). Helens, Mt. Adams
* .5 mile to 21 mile Springwater Trail for biking, hiking.
* 4.5 miles to Gresham, the third largest city in Oregon (107,000) and it's great historic downtown. - Gresham offers several restaurants, great bars with live music, library, antique dealers, a discount movie theater, coffee shops and hosts a Saturday Farmer's market offering fresh local produce and crafts. Free Parking
* 7.4 miles to the famous Hawthorne and Belmont district (west, towards downtown Portland.) There, you will find a high concentration of quirky shops, bars, restaurants, two smaller Powell book stores, coffee shops and a great creative energy. -
* 12.1 miles to downtown Portland (21-25 minute drive).
* 5 miles (11 minutes) to I-205
* 5 miles to Happy Valley
* 9.3 miles (19 minutes) to PDX airport
* 12.5 miles to the Alberta Arts district (24 minutes)
* 22 miles (28 minutes) to Multnomah Falls, on of the most stunning and highest waterfalls in the US
* 22 miles (28 minutes) to Latourelle Falls - a slightly different route, easy to see several falls along the Columbia Historic Highway 30
* 70 miles to the Oregon Coast
* 54.3 miles (57 minutes) to Hood River - spectacular scenery, wine tasting, berries, cherries, fruit and vegetable Nirvana

Start your day with a light breakfast (provided - for you to fix yourself) - fresh fruit, coffee, tea, juice, cereal with almond milk, toast or pastries.

We have two full baths; one with a beautiful tiled shower (that is shared) and the other that we normally use - with no shower.. Plenty of fresh towels, soaps, and lotions as well as clean linens on the bed are provided when you arrive.

Outside, there are flower and vegetable gardens in the front and back yard. A wide, old fashioned chaise lounge plus chairs and table can be found on our back patio - (when it's not raining.) In warmer weather, you will be able to relax with a good book or your coffee or beverage and enjoy the large pots of bamboo, flowers and veggies.

We are a great jumping off point for visits to Mt. Hood, Sandy - (where you can rent snowboards and ski equipment for a day of play on Mt. Hood), Hood River, located on the Columbia River, features world class Kite surfing and windsurfing as well as several world class vineyards with wine tasting and the Columbia Gorge.

The bus lines run both on Division (number 4) and Powell (number 9). It takes about 45 minutes to get to SW 6th and Taylor (downtown). You can also take the bus out to Gresham (East) - about 10 minutes..

This is a lovely residential neighborhood with it's own ranch style homes on larger lots and wider streets than you'll find inside I-205. Within walking distance from here are several convenience shops including newly opened Ross Dress for Less, a newly opened 23 Ichi Teriyaki restaurant with dine-in or take-out available, a Rite-Aid, Subway, a deli, gas stations, book store, bowling alley, Burgerville, Milo's Espresso Coffee shop, Plaid Pantry, a couple of grocery stores, a car wash and a first run movie theater, etc..

One great attraction about 20 minute drive East of here on Halsey, is the famous McMenamins Edgefield location - a 74 acre historical site full of gardens, restaurants, a movie theater, live music, pub, wine and whiskey tasting. It even has a par-3 golf course, picnic tables and paths to explore their gardens.

Private tours can be tailored to your tastes. Traditional sites or more "off the beaten path" wonders can be included. Just let us know.

We are well-stocked with current tourist brochures, books, and maps so you can plan your own adventures. Hope to meet you soon!

Guest Access

Guests have access to their room, the bathroom across the hall, (we just use that one for showers), the kitchen and dishes, spices, teas, dining room and living room. In the warmer weather, the back patio is set up for relaxing as well. Feel free to check out the gardens, if you like.
Our offices and bedroom are private, but if you need something printed, just ask. We'd be happy to take care of that for you.

Interaction with Guests

We enjoy interaction with guests and try to be sensitive to their wishes. Sometimes guests prefer their privacy and quiet - other times they may join us for a chat about the area or their adventures or a meal - either their own food or sharing ours. Just let us know what preferences you have.

The Neighborhood

We love the space out here. Large lots, ranches built in the 1950's and tons of free parking on wide streets. SE Portland and Gresham are built on easy to navigate grids with named streets going east to west and numbered streets, north and south.

Guests will find themselves close to Powell Butte Park and the trails it offers. Springwater Trail is also very close by and is used a great deal by hikers, bikes and horses. If you're here during blackberry season, you can pick to your heart's content.

There is plenty of shopping out here - everything from familiar brands to Mom and Pop stores. Health services are close by as well, should you need them.

Getting around

Two bus lines are within walking distance: Number 4, the Division bus with stops at the corner of Division and SE 162nd. Also, the number 9 with stops at the corner of SE Powell and SE 162nd. Both go downtown or out to Gresham. The Division bus is more popular, if you were to choose.
You can take the bus into the Gresham hub and then take the train all the way west to Hillsboro, if you wish. It does stop at Washington Park at the Zoo and Forestry Center.

Parking is free and plentiful in front of our house.

From the airport, if you have a car (or I can arrange to pick you up for $15 - cabs are $35), you can take Airport Way to I-205 South, and get off at Division going East (left). Turn right onto SE 162nd and go three blocks to SE Brooklyn. Turn left and we're the 3rd house on the Right.

Public Transportation takes about an hour and is $2.50. You Welcome!.... oh and one more thing. The doorbell does NOT work, so please knock loudly or call or text. See you soon!

  • Loved our cozy, art filled room and stay with Deborah and Todd! They are incredibly gracious and helpful hosts. Their sunny backyard is a treasure trove of veggies and flowers and quiet retreat. Our morning run to the nearby Powell Butte trails and interpretive center was welcome bonus. Will definitely be back when we are in the area!

    We enjoyed Domenica and her husband very much. They were gone quite a bit as they were here on business, but they were very friendly and interesting. Thanks for staying with us!

  • The room and bath were really clean and quiet. I'm a pretty independent traveller, so I wanted something like a home base to explore the Portland area. Todd and Deb's home was just what I needed! Deb was great about offering tea and more info and intelligent conversation whenever I felt like socializing, and also just let me rest and have my quiet time. I always felt like I had my own private little haven. I'm looking forward to STAYING friends with them! :)

  • We were warmly welcomed and our hosts are very knowledgeable about the Portland area. The room was clean, quiet, and the hosts allow use of the living room to relax in. We had a change in plans and the hosts graciously granted a partial refund. We would definitely stay again should the need arise. AAA+++

  • Everything about the house was exactly as described. The gardens are beautiful and the room was comfortable. Deborah was extremely friendly and helpful. She had a basket stocked with maps and information. Todd was nice as well but we did not interact with him as much as Deborah. There was plenty to eat for breakfast as well.

  • Deborah and Todd made me feel at home. My room was comfortable, quiet, and nice-sized. The house is pretty far from Portland's city center. I wouldn't recommend taking the bus. But if you're driving, it's definitely worth staying here.

My communications with Deb were very cordial and I plan to stay with them the next time I am in the area. Thank you Airbnb for providing this wonderful network of excellent and economical accommodation options!

We are a Baby Boomer couple who are in love with the Pacific Northwest (I moved here about 12 years ago as a wide-eyed innocent). I am still blown away with the surroundings here and my passion is sharing them with others. What better way than through Airbnb and the discoveries we've made here over the years? In my past lives, I worked in the hospitality industry, had various sales positions, was a Chiropractor, rode and showed horses, was a professional violinist, and most recently, a Realtor. I left that industry awhile ago, but retain my knowledge of various areas and neighborhoods. My experience in living in 8 other states has helped me appreciate this area exponentially. I love having a temperate climate and enjoy the rainy season as well... at least until late spring when I get antsy to get into my garden. I love to cook and create tasty dishes featuring the freshest local produce. I've been told I'm a fine cook and a great snack inventor. When hosting, we like to provide peaceful surroundings with a comfortable bed, clean bathrooms, and easy access to the kitchen, and amenities here and in the area. This is a perfect and affordable jumping off point for your adventures - especially if you wish to explore further east of Portland to the Gorge. .We try to provide as much useful information as is needed to help make the your stay better. My husband, was a professional artist who is now enjoying an entirely different line of work. We still have a huge art studio as a separate building on our property that we use from time to time. He has taken up guitar and does spend some time playing when he's not working. You are welcome to join in if you have an instrument. He has both electric and accoustic. Could be fun.
