The Space

This is a lovely two-story guest house (1200 sqft) with a secure (locked) private entrance surrounded by an 8 ft privacy fence that is walking distance to all restaurants on Manor Rd., bus-stop, and the light-rail station on MLK blvd (only one stop before downtown stop). Cab rides downtown average 5-7 dollars. It is convenient to SXSW events, a few blocks from the UT football stadium, and it's on the way to Formula One since we are east of downtown. We live in the front part of the property (not fenced) in a house on the same property as the guest house--the property is very large at 9,000 sqft. The guest house is in the back with its own entrance and shaded parking space. We are a licensed (# 916167) short-term rental with the city of Austin.

Upstairs : There is one bedroom with a queen bed, balcony, two side-tables, LCD screen TV, I-pod alram clcok, and a closet (with shelves and iron/ironing board). The bathroom is next to the bedroom--it has a large walk-in rain shower. There is also a very large balcony upstairs for lounging among the trees.

Downstairs : there is a large studio (NO DOOR) with a comfy full-size pull-out couch ( high-end foam mattress provided for extra comfort) that is basically a large second bedroom; a full kitchen; and large living area with two large comfortable couches for one or two people (if the full size bed in the studio is not an option for 2 people). PLEASE NOTE: This is technically a two bedroom, but the downstairs bedroom is more like a studio.

Amenities: Wi-fi, 2 LCD screen TVs, cable with HBO, I-pod alarm radio, central air/heat, full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, parking space in drive-way, private 8 ft. fence, towels, shampoo/conditioner/soap, coffee, and a wood-burning fire-place. There are several restaurants and coffee shops less than 2 blocks away (El Chilito, Salty Sow, East Side Cafe, Mi Madres, Haymaker, School House Pub, Thai Thani, Hoovers, Thunderbird Coffee, Bennu Coffee, The Wet Whistle, Ingredients, Butterfly Bar, Windmill Bicyles, and more. The Rail Station is about a ten minute walk and the bus-stop is only two blocks away at the end of Maple Ave.
Recycling/composting and using organic products is important to us. We do not wash our sheets with fragrance or fabric softner and all our cleaning products are organic.

Interaction with Guests

As much as needed. We are always available to answer questions or help with something that is needed, but we like to give guests their space unless they need us for any reason.

The Neighborhood

I love that our neighborhood is very diverse and you can access everything you need on foot other than a major grocery store (need a bike or bus for that). The majority of people moving in lately are students and professionals as the neighborhood as become very expensive lately. All the artists and families that have lived here for more than 40 years are still in the area as well to keep it from being over-gentrified. There is every kind of house in our neighborhood: large modern homes, 50's style bungalows, and a few shacks that could use some TLC. Despite a few eye-sores here and there the neighborhood is very safe.

Getting around

The Rail Station is about a ten minute walk and the bus-stop is only two blocks away at the end of Maple Ave. The bus or train to downtown area is about 5-10 minutes.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • What an awesome place in Austin! The house is decorated in a cool modern style, but feels welcoming and cozy. The floor to ceiling windows provide lots of light and make the ground floor feel very open. There is a large patio upstairs with a fire pit, perfect for sharing a bottle of sparking after a day of exploring Austin.

The kitchen has plenty of cooking tools to prepare a meal. The bed was very comfortable, and bathroom was stocked with soft towels and toiletries in case you forgot soap/shampoo.

The place is a short walk to some restaurants, and a bike shop where we rented bikes for the day. We had a great stay in Michelle's guest house.

  • The guest house is absolutely gorgeous and our stay was incredibly peaceful. From the beautiful windows and light in the morning and the spacious patio, to the comfortable bed and a tv to watch while curled up, this place was just perfect for a getaway. It's close to downtown, a quick drive to the north side, and plenty of eateries are within walking distance. We will definitely be back and can't wait!

  • We REALLY enjoyed our stay at Michelle's guest house. The location was amazing, plenty of food within easy walking distance. We got tacos at El Chilito and sandwiches at Haymaker they were both amazing places. Michelle and her family were great hosts. And, the dogs are super friendly. The house is beautifully decorated (we loved the Sonic Youth and Flaming Lips posters) we would highly recommend staying at Michelle's guest house, and next time we visit Austin, we would definitely try and stay here. THANK YOU!

  • FABULOUS place. Beautifully appointed private guest house that we picked because of its proximity to our daughter's new address in Austin. Easy access/check-in and the parking spot is only a few steps from the front door. Hosts could not have been more kind, helpful, or responsive. We will be back and often. (I only hope all these positive reviews don't make it hard to get in!) With a 50-degree drop in temperatures our first 24 hours in Austin, the fireplace was a wonderful addition to our stay.

  • We, two adults n two boys 11 & 12, stayed here for a week after Christmas. It was the perfect set up for our family with privacy for the adults upstairs and the kids in the den downstairs. The guest house is lovely, well outfitted, and as several others have mentioned, very close to great eats. The yard is very private and I loved that our kids could shoot goals on the net. Nearby is also playground if you are traveling with kiddos who need lots of action even if you have had them hiking or rock climbing all day! Michelle was great about communicating and offering lots of good tips for the area. We recommend this guest house and would stay there again if we visit Austin again!

  • We spent Thanksgiving in this wonderful guest house. It was everything we could have imagined and a perfect place to spend the holiday with our family.
We will definitely stay here again when we return to Austin

  • We loved our stay at the guest house, this was our first time using airbnb and we weren't disappointed! We flew in for the Formula One races and stayed for 4 nights. It was clean, comfy and private. It felt like our own little home away from home. You can tell the home was built with love and care; it inspired us to want to update things in our own home. The dogs were sweet and made us miss our dog back home. We didn't get the chance to meet Michelle since we were out and about often but we did bump into John and he was very nice. I appreciated the little things in the house: like the sleep sound machine, bath robe, coffee and creamer and the full length mirror in the bedroom closet.

We loved the restaurants within walking distance and really appreciated the instructions/recommendations that Michelle had printed out. We ate at El Chiloto 3 times and had drinks twice at the Haymaker. We caught the bus 2 of the nights into downtown and took a taxi back (only $13). If we come back to Austin, I'd definitely love to stay here again.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Michelle's guest house. The location was great, with lots of food within easy walking distance, and a quick drive (or bus ride, though I didn't try that) to campus for the conference I was attending. Michelle and her family were gracious hosts, and we had fun talking with them. My son is still talking about the fun he had there! I would highly recommend staying at Michelle's guest house, and would stay there myself whenever I find myself in Austin in the future.

  • The house was better than we expected from the photos online! Michelle and her dogs were very friendly, the house was comfortable and inviting, and it was the perfect space for entertaining a small group of friends. Another guest posted that this was the perfect fit between a hotel with high quality finishes and feeling like being at home... and I couldn't agree more. The upstairs bed is so comfortable and the memorabilia throughout the house is interesting and fun. A huge plus was that it took us about 10 minutes to get to the airport, downtown and basically everything else we were doing while in town! We'll definitely look up the place the next time we are in town.

  • Our stay at Michelle's place was exceptional, felt just like home. We were visiting our freshman daughter for UT Family weekend and couldn't have picked a better place to stay. It was easy to get to and from the campus, easy access to HEB to restock our daughters dorm, and great restaurants in the area. The kitchen was well equipped which allowed me to make my daughter some good home cooked meals. The place comfortably accommodated my husband and I, my 20 year old son, and even my daughter when she decided to spend one night with us. Michelle kept in constant communication with us before and during our stay. And.... My son and daughter LOVED petting and giving snacks to her two friendly dogs. Definitely staying here for future visits, so comfortable and homey we didn't want to leave. Thanks Michelle

I moved a way a few times, but always found my way back to Austin - yhis city is hard to beat for food, weather, and fun. My husband and I both love to travel and prefer to stay in boutique hotels or guest houses when we do, so we decided to offer up our guest house for people traveling to Austin that want a similar experience. I work in the Mental Health field (used to work in the music industry) but have a love for design and architecture - I designed the outside and inside of the guest house myself. In addition to traveling, my husband and I love food and music--Austin is great for both!
